Chapter 2 - The Web of BetrayalKieran stood in the quiet darkness of his kitchen, holding the phone so tightly his knuckles turned white. "What did you just say, Petra?"

Silence stretched across the line, heavy and toxic. When Petra spoke again, the soft, helpless tone she usually reserved for him was completely gone. In its place was a sharp, calculating pitch he had never heard from her before.
"Where are you, Kieran?" she asked quietly.
"I'm at home," Kieran said, his voice dropping into the icy register that usually made seasoned syndicate lieutenants tremble. "In an empty apartment. Looking at a forged financial transfer for two point four million dollars bearing my wife's signature and your name. Explain it to me. Now."
"I can't talk about this over the phone," Petra replied, her breathing shallow. "Come to my place."
"No," Kieran growled. "You come here. Right now. Or I send Gabriel to drag you out of that bed."
"If Gabriel comes here, Kieran, the Chicago Federal Prosecutor's Office gets an automated delivery of every financial ledger belonging to Voss Capital Partners," Petra shot back without a second of hesitation.
Kieran froze. The air in the penthouse seemed to plunge below freezing. The Voss Family Foundation had been the primary laundering conduit for his organization's legitimate and off-the-books assets for over a decade. It was pristine, bulletproof, and protected by top-tier tax attorneys. The only way federal prosecutors could touch it was if an insider provided verified, internal administrative access codes.
Codes that had been assigned to his wife. And managed by her sister.
"You used Nadia," Kieran whispered, the sickening reality crashing through his mind like a freight train. "For fourteen months... it wasn't about me, was it?"
Petra let out a bitter, breathy laugh. "You really are an arrogant bastard, aren't you, Kieran? You thought a twenty-nine-year-old woman fell madly in love with her sister's forty-one-year-old, emotionally dead husband? You thought I wanted you?"
Kieran's jaw clenched so hard his teeth ground together. "Who are you working for, Petra?"
"Come to my apartment alone," she said flatly. "And bring the file Nadia left on the counter. If I see anyone from your security detail, the upload button gets pushed."
The line went dead.
Kieran stared at the dark screen of his phone, his chest heaving. For fourteen months, he had believed he was a master manipulator, enjoying a secret affair with a younger woman while keeping his quiet, devoted wife neatly tucked away in his gilded cage. He had believed he was in total control.
In reality, he had been a blind, arrogant fool.
He grabbed his coat, stuffed the envelope into his inner pocket, and headed down the private elevator. Instead of calling his driver, he unlocked his personal dark sedan in the subterranean garage and sped out into the rainy Chicago night.
Twenty minutes later, Kieran pushed open the door to Petra's apartment on West Erie Street.
The unit was dimly lit. The white hotel robe she had worn eleven days ago was gone, replaced by a tailored black business suit. Packed luggage sat beside the sofa. Standing near the kitchen island, holding a crystal glass of scotch, was a man Kieran recognized instantly.
Dominic Vance.
The head of Vance Global Logistics—the primary rival syndicate fighting Kieran's organization for control of the Lake Michigan shipping ports.
Kieran stopped dead in his tracks, his hand instinctively resting over the concealed firearm beneath his jacket. "Vance."
Dominic Vance offered a smooth, predatory smile, raising his glass in a mock toast. "Good evening, Kieran. You look terrible. Marital trouble, I hear?"
Kieran ignored Vance, shifting his lethal gaze to Petra. "You sold out your own sister. You forged her signature on federal embezzlement documents to set her up as the fall guy for Vance's tax fraud."
Petra didn't even flinch. She took a sip of her drink, leaning against the counter. "Nadia was always the golden child. The selfless nurse. The saint who married the billionaire. Meanwhile, I was the mess who needed hand-outs. But Nadia was stupid, Kieran. She trusted you. She trusted me. She never checked her email. She never looked at the foundation's corporate filings."
"You framed a pregnant woman," Kieran said, his voice dropping into a lethal whisper. "My wife. Carrying my child."
"She was the perfect cover," Vance chimed in, stepping around the island. "Your foundation transferred two point four million dollars into a shell company controlled by my firm. In the eyes of the IRS and the FBI, Mrs. Kieran Voss authorized the transfer, laundered the cash, and fled the city to escape prosecution. By tomorrow morning, federal warrants will be issued for her arrest."
Vance smiled wider, his dark eyes glinting with malicious triumph. "And when the feds press her, they'll seize all of Voss Capital's assets. Your empire is finished, Kieran. You lose your money, your ports, and your wife."
Kieran stared at Vance, then at Petra. The sheer scale of the trap was breathtaking. They hadn't just destroyed his marriage; they had engineered a corporate and legal execution that left his wife facing decades in a federal penitentiary while his rival swallowed his empire whole.
"Hand over the original file, Kieran," Petra demanded, extending a hand. "And maybe I won't tell Vance's enforcers where Nadia is hiding."
Kieran's eyes narrowed into slits. "You know where she is?"
"I've been tracking her phone for a week," Petra sneered. "She thinks she's safe in a quiet little cabin in Upstate Wisconsin. One phone call from me, and Vance's men go clean up the loose end before the feds can interview her."
Threatening his empire was one thing. Threatening his unborn child and the woman he had betrayed was a line that shattered whatever remaining restraint Kieran Voss possessed.
In a fraction of a second, Kieran drew his firearm.
BANG!
A suppressed gunshot echoed through the apartment. Dominic Vance gasped, dropping his glass as a bullet shattered his kneecaps, sending the rival mob boss crashing heavily onto the hardwood floor, screaming in agony.

Petra shrieked, backing away in terror, her face going pale as paper as Kieran stepped over Vance's bleeding body, pointing the barrel directly between her eyes.
"Give me the tracking device," Kieran commanded, his voice cold as the grave. "Now."
