Chapter 3

CHAPTER 4 — The Anatomy of a Scandal
Marissa’s apartment was a sanctuary of unpretentious comfort. There were books stacked on the floor, mugs with chipped rims, and the faint, comforting smell of lavender. I sat on the floor, my laptop open, preparing to strike. I had the documents, I had the proof, and I had the motivation. Brandon’s empire was built on a foundation of sand, and I knew exactly where to kick. I started by drafting an email to the federal grant committee. I attached the documents, the ones I had copied months ago, the ones that proved he had forged community support. My fingers moved across the keys with a steady rhythm. Each sentence was a surgical incision into his reputation. I was not writing out of petty revenge. I was writing to restore justice. I spent the night working, the coffee in my cup turning cold and bitter. My phone remained silent, though I knew the storm was brewing back at the mansion. Brandon would be panicked. He would be trying to reach his lawyers, his PR team, anyone who could help him spin this. But he couldn't spin the truth once it was in the hands of the authorities. Around dawn, I stepped onto the small balcony and watched the sun rise. The world looked different from here. Everything was clearer, sharper, more defined. I thought about my mother, and how she had always told me to stand tall. I had shrunk myself for Brandon. I had made myself small to fit into his life. Never again. I went back inside and finished the final email. I hit send. The action felt like a weight lifting from my chest. I knew there would be repercussions. Brandon would come for me, using every resource he had. He would try to paint me as the hysterical, vengeful ex-wife. But he wouldn't succeed. I had prepared for this. I had documented every single instance of his manipulation, every contract that didn't sit right, every meeting that felt like a trap. I had kept a record of the emotional toll, the quiet moments where he had tried to erode my confidence. I had been a witness in my own home, waiting for the right moment to speak. That moment was now. I lay down on the couch, exhaustion finally claiming me. I fell into a deep, dreamless sleep, the first real sleep I had had in months. I woke up to the sound of my phone buzzing on the side table. It was a notification from a local news outlet. The headline hit me like a physical blow: "Kensington Development Faces Federal Inquiry Amidst Fraud Allegations." I smiled. The house of cards was falling. I wasn't just a victim anymore. I was the one who had tipped the scale. I stood up, ready to face whatever came next. I was ready to fight.
