Chapter 2 - The Hidden Truth Beneath the Broken Glass and Betrayal

The digital glow of Clara’s shattered iPhone illuminated my face in the dim, sterile lighting of the hospital waiting room like a ghostly beacon. Mateo stood beside me, his hands clasped behind his back, his eyes darting down the corridor to ensure no nurses or hospital staff were creeping too close to our perimeter.

"Unlock it, Dom," Mateo urged softly. "The passcode should be her birthday, but the biometrics are locked out due to the impact damage."

I punched in the four digits of Clara’s birth date. The screen blinked twice, processing the code, and then unlocked with a soft digital chime. My chest tightened as her home screen wallpaper appeared—a quiet picture of us standing together on a beach in Amalfi five years ago, before the mafia wars consumed my life, before Serena entered my world, before everything started rotting from the inside out.

I didn't waste time scrolling through sentimentality. I swiped directly to her active applications, opening her encrypted messaging logs, her call history, and her GPS location history.

What I saw made the breath stall in my lungs.

For the past six months, Clara hadn't just been living the quiet, sheltered life of a mob boss's wife in our Gold Coast mansion. She had been conducting a meticulous, high-level counter-investigation into my own organization.

There were encrypted chat transcripts between Clara and an anonymous informant inside the Valente syndicate—someone using the codename *Viper*. File after file of financial audits, offshore shell company transfers, and intercepted phone logs were stored neatly in a hidden folder labeled *Protection*.

I tapped on the latest document, and my blood ran freezing cold.

It was a comprehensive dossier detailing Serena Hayes. Every single monetary transaction I had made to buy Serena her luxury downtown condo, every designer handbag, every secret weekend getaway we had taken to Miami—all of it was cataloged with timestamped precision. But that wasn't the most damning part.

Further down the folder was a series of bank statements showing millions of dollars quietly funneling out of my primary corporate accounts and landing directly into a private Swiss bank account registered under a shell corporation named *Apex Holdings*.

I stared at the screen, my brain refusing to process the math. *Apex Holdings* wasn't a Moretti front company. It belonged exclusively to Marcus Vance—my chief financial officer, my most trusted advisor, and the man who managed every single dollar of my legitimate and illegitimate wealth.

"Mateo," I whispered, my voice sounding like gravel grinding together. "Look at this."

Mateo leaned over my shoulder, his sharp eyes scanning the screen. As his gaze hit the name *Apex Holdings*, his face drained of all color. His jaw dropped open.

"Vance?" Mateo breathed in sheer disbelief. "That son of a bitch is skimming from the syndicate? But... how? He's been with you for fifteen years!"

"He hasn't just been skimming," I said, a dark, murderous rage beginning to boil deep inside my gut, burning away every ounce of shock. "He’s been bleeding the family dry, slowly framing me for federal tax evasion, and positioning himself to take over the entire Chicago operation when the feds finally moved in."

"And Mrs. Valente... she found out?" Mateo asked, his voice trembling slightly as he looked toward the operating room doors where Clara was still fighting for her life.

I scrolled further down, opening a voice memo recorded less than two hours before the crash. I hit play, keeping the speaker close to my ear.

Clara’s voice filled the quiet room, sounding tired, resolute, and completely unafraid.

*"If you're listening to this, Dom, it means I didn't make it back from the South Side warehouse district. Marcus Vance thinks he's clever. He set up that little blonde parasite, Serena, to keep you distracted, drugged up on manufactured drama, and completely blind while he systematically looted your empire behind your back. I found the physical ledger in his lake house safe. I have it with me in the car right now. I'm taking it to District Attorney Harrison tonight, no matter what it takes. Don't let them win, Dom. And God help me... I still love you, even if you forgot how to love me."*

The audio memo ended with a soft click.

I stood frozen in the middle of the hospital hallway, the phone gripped so tightly in my fist that the glass shards bit into my skin, drawing tiny beads of blood that mingled with Clara's dried blood already staining my hands.

The truth hit me like a freight train traveling at a hundred miles an hour.

Clara hadn't been driving across the dangerous South Side at midnight on a whim. She had been driving there to protect me. She had risked her life to secure the physical evidence that would expose Marcus Vance's treason, while I had been sitting in a sterile room holding the hand of the very woman Vance had planted as a distraction to keep me blind and compliant.

Serena wasn't just a mistress who suffered panic attacks. She was a corporate plant, a paid actress put on my payroll by Marcus Vance to keep me locked in a gilded cage while my real wife dug up the rot eating away at our foundation.

"Boss..." Mateo said cautiously, stepping back as he saw the terrifying look in my eyes. "What are your orders?"

I locked the phone, slipped it safely into my inner breast pocket, and straightened my blood-stained jacket. The grief I had felt moments earlier transformed instantly into something far more dangerous: cold, calculated, merciless underworld vengeance.

"Get every single man we have on high alert," I said, my voice cutting through the corridor like a razor blade. "Lock down every airport, every private airstrip, and every highway leaving Chicago. Marcus Vance thinks he has outsmarted the Valente syndicate."

I turned my gaze toward the operating room doors, whispering a silent vow to the woman fighting for her life inside.
