Chapter 8

Cambria made the irreversible decision the following morning.
First, she signed a sworn statement to Meridian Commercial Credit denying authorization of every disputed household financial representation and electronic signature.
Second, she notified the bonding companies and major vendors that neither she nor any Renaldi entity had guaranteed Kane Development obligations unless a separate written contract said otherwise.
Third, she authorized an independent forensic review of all electronic access involving her name, accounts, family-office documents, and Kane Development.
If the review identified falsified signatures, deceptive lender submissions, or identity misuse, outside counsel had authority to refer the matter to appropriate regulators or law enforcement without returning to Cambria for family permission.
Then Augusto did something his advisers hated.
He opened the relevant Renaldi corporate records too.
Not everything indiscriminately.
Everything needed to determine whether any Renaldi employee or company had actually created, approved, or ratified the alleged Kane affiliation.
His lawyer warned him:
“An outside review may find unrelated governance problems.”
Augusto signed anyway.
Cambria looked at him.
“You understand this could reach your people.”
“Yes.”
“You.”
“Yes.”
“Old arrangements.”
“Yes.”
She waited.
Augusto glanced toward her stomach.
“I spent thirty years teaching everyone that family would handle family problems.”
He signed the last page.
“Apparently that taught people family boundaries weren’t real.”
The notices went out by noon.
Meridian froze Kane Development’s undrawn credit.
The bonding company suspended approval of new bonded work.
Two major suppliers stopped extending credit until the affiliation question was resolved.
Wesley called.
Cambria did not answer.
He left a voicemail.
“Ninety-two people are going to lose their jobs because you needed to prove a point.”
Cambria listened once.
Then saved it for counsel.
The consequences hurt.
That did not mean the decision was wrong.

By evening, Kane Development was negotiating emergency restructuring.
And for the first time, Wesley could no longer use the possibility of a Renaldi rescue without someone asking him to show the actual document behind it.
