Chapter 6

CHAPTER 7 — The Unwritten Future
A month later, the world outside was bright, clean, and full of the promise of spring.
I stood on the balcony of my father’s home, the air fragrant with the scent of blooming magnolias.
The legal proceedings had been a whirlwind, but they were finally reaching a conclusion.
Cole had been sentenced to a long term, his reputation in tatters, his life effectively over.
Evelyn had fled the city, a disgraced ghost of the woman who had once thought she was a queen.
I had moved on, not just physically, but in the way I saw the world and my place in it.
My father was sitting on the patio below, a book in his lap and a calm smile on his face.
He had been my protector, my lawyer, and my bridge back to the person I used to be.
I walked down the stairs, the gentle ache in my side reminding me of how far I had come.
I sat down across from him, feeling the warmth of the sun on my face.
"It’s quiet," I said, looking out at the trees swaying in the gentle breeze.
"It’s the quiet of a life you’ve earned," he replied, closing his book.
"No more alarms, no more locking doors, no more looking over your shoulder."
"Just you, me, and the future," he added, a twinkle in his tired, intelligent eyes.
I realized that I wasn't just a daughter anymore; I was a partner in my own liberation.
The baby kicked inside me, a small, insistent, and beautiful reminder of what I had saved.
I was bringing a new life into a world that I had fought to make safe and honest.
"I’m ready," I said, looking at him and meaning it with every fiber of my being.
"I’m ready to start over, but this time, on my own terms."
He nodded, a gesture of absolute, unwavering, and profound approval.
"That’s all I ever wanted for you," he said.
"To see you live a life that you chose, not one that was forced upon you."
The past was a shadow, but the future was a brilliant, unfolding, and endless horizon.
I stood up and walked into the house, my steps steady, my heart light and free.
The kitchen inside was filled with the smell of coffee and the sounds of a new day.
I was home, and for the first time, I knew exactly what that word meant.
It wasn't a place, it wasn't a person, and it wasn't a set of rules.
It was the feeling of being completely and utterly myself.
And that was a victory that no one, absolutely no one, could ever take away from me.

The journey had been long, the toll had been heavy, but the ending was mine.
I was Hannah Mercer, and I was just getting started.
