Chapter 3 - The Lanky Figure in the Grey Hoodie

The fourth-floor hallway of the tenement building on Dearborn Street smelled faintly of damp plaster, cheap bleach, and decades of neglected cooking. The flickering fluorescent overhead bulb buzzed with an irritating, high-pitched whine that bounced off the peeling green wallpaper.
Sophia stood directly outside Apartment 4B—Isabella Romano’s residence.
She didn't knock. Instead, she knelt down near the wooden doorframe, her sharp eyes scanning the baseboards and the dark corners of the landing. Right beside the welcome mat, wedged deep into the grain of the worn floorboards, lay a small, crumpled piece of lined notebook paper.
She picked it up with two fingers and carefully unfolded it.
Scrawled across the paper in messy, hurried handwriting were explicit instructions:
Wait by the side door at 7:10 PM. Wear the grey hoodie. Hold the metal pipe. Scream when you see him, then run down the alley toward the hardware store loading dock. Do not miss your mark or the second half of the cash wire will be cancelled.
At the bottom of the note was a signature line scribbled in a distinctly feminine, sweeping cursive—initialed I.R.
Sophia let out a breath that felt like frozen glass. The entire terrifying home invasion on the night of her anniversary had been a complete, unadulterated fraud. Isabella had hired a cheap local hoodlum to play the part of a stalker, engineered the exact timing to coincide with their dinner reservation, and lured Adrian away with a theatrical display of manufactured terror to ensure Sophia sat alone in the dark.
Suddenly, a heavy metallic clang echoed from the end of the dark hallway—the sound of the emergency fire escape door swinging shut.
Sophia whipped her head around.
Darting down the dim corridor toward the stairs was a tall, incredibly lanky young man wearing a familiar, cheap grey hoodie.
"Hey! Stop right there!" Sophia called out, scrambling to her feet and giving chase.
The lanky figure let out a frightened squawk of panic, his sneakers squeaking wildly against the linoleum floor as he threw himself down the metal stairs three steps at a time. Sophia pushed through the heavy metal fire door just in time to see him tumbling out into the gloomy alleyway behind the building.
"Wait! I'm not Adrian! I just want to talk!" she shouted, sprinting down the metal steps after him.
The young man—Teddy Cole, though Sophia didn't know his name yet—tripped over a discarded crate in the alley, sprawling hard onto the wet gravel. Before he could scramble back up to his feet, Sophia caught up, planting her boot firmly near his fallen jacket sleeve to pin him in place.
"Let me go! I swear to God I didn't mean no harm!" Teddy shrieked, pressing his back against the brick wall, his eyes wide and bloodshot with absolute terror. "The lady said nobody would get hurt! She just said scare her friend so he'd come running!"
Sophia stared down at him, her chest heaving from the sprint. "The lady? You mean Isabella Romano?"
Teddy blinked frantically, his lower lip trembling. "Yeah! That’s her name! Isabella! She paid me five hundred bucks upfront and promised another five hundred if I ran fast enough down the alley when the big guy showed up with his gun drawn! Look, lady, I’ve got the burner phone right here in my pocket! All her texts are saved on it!"
Sophia felt a cold wave of fury wash over her veins, instantly replacing the lingering sadness of the previous night. She reached down, yanked the cheap prepaid burner phone out of his trembling fingers, and slipped it directly into her coat pocket.
"Get up," Sophia commanded coldly, stepping back. "You're coming with me to see my father. And you're going to repeat every single word of this to a federal prosecutor."
May you like
Teddy swallowed hard, scrambling up onto his knees like a whipped dog. "Am... am I going to jail?"
"Only if you don't cooperate," Sophia replied, her voice dropping into a lethal, unyielding register. "Right now, you're the key witness in a conspiracy that's about to bring down a very powerful empire."
