Chapter 3 - The Ultimate Betrayal Unveiled: Secrets in the Boardroom

The fallout inside Sterling & Vance Financial moved at lightning speed once the corporate board of directors received the forensic audit report compiled by my legal team. By noon, emergency shareholder meetings had been called, emergency freezes were placed on all discretionary executive funds, and Ethan’s office was officially locked down by corporate security pending a federal investigation.
Yet, Ethan still believed he had one final, desperate card to play.
Later that afternoon, while I was resting in my private office at the hospital before my evening rounds, the heavy wooden door pushed open without a knock. Ethan stood in the doorway. He looked disheveled, his expensive tie loosened, his hair messy, and the cocky aura that once surrounded him entirely gone.
"Lauren, please. We need to talk alone," he pleaded, stepping into the room and closing the door behind him.
I remained seated behind my desk, calmly reviewing pediatric trauma charts. "You have nothing to say to me that your defense attorney hasn't already submitted in writing, Ethan."
"No, this isn't about the lawyers, and it’s not about the money," he insisted, walking closer and leaning his hands against the edge of my desk. His eyes were bloodshot, shimmering with a desperate, pathetic plea for empathy. "Look at us. We were college sweethearts. We built this life from the ground up. Can you really throw ten years of history away over a mistake?"
I slowly set my pen down on the desk, leaned back in my ergonomic chair, and looked directly into his eyes.
"A mistake, Ethan?" I asked, my voice dangerously calm. "Sleeping with someone once in a moment of weakness is a mistake. Renting a secret luxury apartment for three years behind my back, buying a multi-carat diamond bracelet with embezzled corporate funds while I was growing our child, and lying to my face every single night is not a mistake. That is a deliberate, calculated lifestyle of deceit."
"Madison meant nothing!" he cried out, his voice cracking with panic as he tried the oldest, most pathetic excuse in the book. "She was just a distraction, a momentary lapse in judgment—"
"Stop," I snapped, holding up a single hand to cut him off. "Just stop embarrassing yourself further. Do you honestly think I didn't dig deeper into your little corporate side-project?"
Ethan blinked, a sudden flicker of genuine apprehension crossing his face. "What are you talking about?"
I opened the top drawer of my desk, pulled out a thick, sealed manila envelope marked with confidential red ink, and slid it slowly across the wooden surface toward him.
"Even after I found out about the hotel room and the financial embezzlement, I still couldn't understand why you were so recklessly risking everything—your career, your reputation, your freedom," I said quietly, watching every muscle in his face tense up. "So I had Marcus dig into Madison Vale's background before she ever started working at your firm as your 'senior executive assistant.'"
Ethan stared at the envelope as if it were a venomous snake coil ready to strike.
"Go ahead," I prompted gently. "Open it."
With trembling fingers, Ethan picked up the envelope, slid out the crisp documents inside, and scanned the top page. Within three seconds, all the remaining color completely drained from his face. His knees buckled slightly, and he had to grip the edge of the desk to keep from falling over.
"This... this isn't possible," he whispered, his voice trembling violently.
"Oh, it’s entirely possible," I replied, leaning forward. "Madison Vale isn't just your mistress, Ethan. She is the daughter of Arthur Vance—the former managing partner of the rival investment firm that tried hostilely taking over your company five years ago. When that hostile takeover failed and Arthur was pushed out of the financial sector in disgrace, his family lost everything."
Ethan stared down at the documents, his breath coming in ragged, shallow gasps.
"Madison didn't stumble into your life by accident, Ethan," I continued, spelling out the brutal reality he had been too arrogant and blinded by ego to see. "She targeted you. She spent two years plotting her revenge, worming her way into your confidence, making you feel like a powerful god while she systematically seduced you, manipulated your corporate decisions, and guided your hand into embezzling company funds—all so she could orchestrate your complete and utter destruction from the inside out."
He shook his head furiously, denial washing over him like a tidal wave. "No... no, she cared about me! She told me she loved me!"
"She loved watching you dance like a puppet on her strings," I said ruthlessly. "When I operated on her in Trauma Two and saved her life, I didn't do it for her, and I certainly didn't do it for you. I did it because I wanted her alive to watch the grand finale of her own master plan—a plan where you take the full fall for federal embezzlement, corporate fraud, and insider trading, while she walks away with immunity, having successfully destroyed your entire career, your reputation, and your freedom."

Ethan collapsed heavily into the chair opposite my desk, burying his face in his hands as dry, racking sobs finally broke through his defenses. All his power, all his wealth, and all his arrogance had been utterly dismantled not just by a betrayed wife, but by the very trap he had willingly walked into out of sheer vanity.
"It's over, Ethan," I said softly, standing up from my chair and smoothing down my white coat as I prepared for my evening rounds in the NICU. "Sign the papers, cooperate with the federal investigators, and be grateful that prison is the only place you're going. Because if I had chosen to unleash my full fury without the law getting involved first, you wouldn't even have a soul left to mourn."
