Chapter 9 - Someone Had Been Watching Amelia for Three Years—And Vincent Finally Understood WhyAmelia did not sleep.

She sat on floor surrounded by copies of photographs.
Her life.
Stolen in frames.
Walking home.
Buying groceries.
Laughing with Angela.
Crying outside therapist's office.
A man she dated once.
Vincent hated that photograph for reasons he did not mention.
Amelia noticed anyway.
“Don't.”
“I didn't say anything.”
“Your face did.”
“My face has limited emotional discipline.”
Despite herself she laughed.
Then found photograph that stopped everything.
A hospital.
Philadelphia.
Three years before she escaped Raymond.
Amelia stood outside emergency entrance.
Bruised.
Beside her—
Nicholas.
She stared.
“Nicky?”
Nicholas went pale.
“That wasn't possible.”
“You said you didn't see me until after I left Raymond.”
“I didn't.”
“Then explain.”
He took photograph.
Zoomed.
Not Nicholas.
Someone who looked remarkably similar from angle.
Vincent recognized him.
“Gabriel Fletcher.”
Amelia froze.
“My father?”
Nicholas stared.
Their father had supposedly died fourteen years earlier.
Gambling debts.
Heart attack.
Cheap motel.
Closed casket because decomposition.
Amelia laughed once.
“No.”
Vincent knew that laugh.
Too much truth arriving too fast.
“No more dead people coming back.”
Nicholas looked sick.
“I saw Dad's body.”
“Did you?”
“Yes.”
“Actually?”
Pause.
“No.”
Amelia stood.
“Of course.”
Ruiz investigated.
By afternoon they knew.
Gabriel Fletcher had not died when children believed.
He became informant.
Federal protection.
New identity.
Then disappeared from protection.
Why?
Because he had been working with Marco.
Nicholas sat in stunned silence.
Their father's gambling debts had not merely pushed Nicholas toward criminal work.
Gabriel had engineered it.
He needed son inside Castellano organization.
Nicholas whispered:
“He used me.”
Amelia looked at him.
“Yes.”
No comfort.
Truth first.
Vincent watched siblings absorb another betrayal from someone who claimed family.
Then phone rang.
Gabriel Fletcher was alive.
Ruiz had found him in Pennsylvania.
He agreed to meet.
Amelia refused initially.
Then changed mind.
“My choice.”
Vincent nodded.
At federal office, Gabriel entered interview room.
Seventy.
Thin.
Gray.
Amelia recognized eyes immediately.
Her own.
He started crying.
“Millie.”
She stood.
“Don't call me that.”
He stopped.
Raymond had used nickname.
Apparently inherited.
“Amelia.”
“Why?”
No reunion.
No hug.
One word.
Why?
Gabriel told story.
Debt.
Fear.
Marco.
Raymond.
Nicholas.
He had tried to protect children by disappearing.
Amelia laughed.
“There it is again.”
“What?”
“Protect.”
She leaned forward.
“Every man in my life destroys something and calls it protection.”
Gabriel cried.
“I loved you.”
“That doesn't answer anything.”
He admitted.
He introduced Raymond to Nicholas.
He knew Raymond was violent in business.
Didn't know about Amelia.
He knew trafficking rumors.
Ignored them because Marco paid.
Nicholas stood.
“You sent me into that organization.”
“Yes.”
“You let me think I was saving you from gambling debt.”
“Yes.”
Nicholas punched wall.
Vincent did not intervene.
Amelia asked final question.
“Why was Marco watching me?”
Gabriel looked at Vincent.
“Because Marco knew his brother's weakness.”
Vincent's jaw tightened.
Amelia corrected.
“I wasn't Vincent's weakness then.”
“No.”
Gabriel looked ashamed.
“You were mine.”
Silence.
Marco had used Amelia as leverage against Gabriel.
Photographs began before Vincent knew her.
After Gabriel vanished again, Marco kept surveillance.
Then Vincent recognized Amelia at diner.
Marco saw opportunity.
He encouraged Raymond to find her.
Derek's assault.
Raymond's return.
All of it had layers.
Not everything planned.
But enough.
Amelia felt nauseated.
“I'm tired of being leverage.”
Vincent said quietly:
“Then don't be.”
She looked at him.
“How?”
“Stop asking why powerful men value you.”
“What?”
He stepped closer but remained across table.
“You are not valuable because Marco watched you.”
She stared.
“Not because Raymond wanted you.”
His voice remained calm.
“Not because your father feared losing you.”
Then:
“And not because I love you.”
Amelia's eyes filled.
“You are valuable when none of us are in room.”
Gabriel looked down.
Nicholas cried.
Amelia looked at Vincent.
That was moment.
Not kiss.
Not declaration.
Something more dangerous.
Trust trying to return.
Then alarm sounded.
Ruiz entered.
“Move!”
Rizzo's men had breached parking garage.
Gabriel panicked.
“He found me.”
Gunfire downstairs.
Agents moved them toward secure corridor.
Gabriel stopped.
“I know where ledger master copy is.”
Ruiz turned.
“Where?”
“Marco gave it to me.”
“Why?”
“Insurance.”
“Location?”
Gabriel looked at Amelia.
“Your mother's grave.”
Nicholas stared.
“What?”
“Inside monument base.”
Amelia closed eyes.
Even dead mother had been turned into hiding place.
They escaped building.
Rizzo's men arrested.
One killed himself rather than surrender.
Rizzo remained missing.
That night they went cemetery under federal escort.
Workers opened monument base.
Inside waterproof cylinder.
Ledger.
Original.
Every name.
Every payment.
Every crime.
Enough to collapse careers across three states.
Ruiz stared.
“This ends it.”
Vincent shook head.
“No.”
Everyone looked.
“It starts it.”
He knew men in ledger.
Some would run.
Some kill.
Some bargain.
And one name made Vincent stop breathing.
At bottom of page:
ANTHONY “TONY” BELLINI.
Amelia stared.
Tony.
The cook.
The man who had made her soup after Derek hit her.
The man who had worked beside her for years.
Nicholas whispered:
“No.”
Vincent looked at payment dates.
Recent.
Very recent.
One payment had been made three weeks earlier.
After Marco died.
Amelia's phone rang.
Tony.
She answered.
His voice shook.
“Amelia.”
“Tony?”
“Don't come to diner.”
Her blood went cold.
“Why?”
“Because Rizzo is here.”
A gunshot sounded.
May you like
Call ended.
And Amelia ran.
