Chapter 5 - Forged in Ice, Bound in Blood—The Underworld’s New Queen

Three days after Christmas, the blizzard finally broke, leaving Saddle River buried beneath three feet of pristine, blinding white snow. The sky above the Ferretti estate was a brilliant, cloudless cobalt blue, and the morning sun glinted off the Gothic stone towers like diamonds.

Inside the master bedroom, the air was warm, scented with eucalyptus and vanilla.

Ella Parker sat propped up against a mountain of down pillows in the grand mahogany bed, wearing a soft silk robe that had belonged to Luca’s mother. The color had finally returned to her cheeks, and though her right wrist still bore faint bruises from the guards' grip, her eyes were bright, clear, and filled with a quiet strength she hadn't known she possessed.

The heavy oak door opened softly, and Luca stepped inside. He held a silver tray with a steaming cup of espresso and a warm croissant. He looked different than he had a week ago—the razor-sharp tension that always defined him had softened, his shoulders relaxed, the winter-ocean eyes warmed by something entirely human.

"How is the patient?" Luca asked gently, setting the tray on the bedside table and sitting on the edge of the mattress.

"Better," Ella smiled softly, taking the cup of coffee. "Though I think your housekeeper Nolan is worried I'm going to spill espresso on your expensive sheets again."

"Nolan answers to me. And the sheets are replaceable. You aren't."

Ella looked down into her coffee cup, a faint blush warming her cheeks. "Luca... what happened to the Riccis? I heard rumors from the staff, but... Don Silvio hasn't been answering calls, and Valentina..."

"Don Silvio and I renegotiated the terms of our business," Luca said, his voice smooth and untroubled. "The gambling debt your father signed away? It’s been canceled, stamped *Paid in Full*, and your father has been relocated to a quiet farm in Nebraska, far away from underground casinos and Ricci enforcers. As for Valentina..." He paused, a faint, humorless smirk touching his lips. "She walked down the mountain that night. Her father’s men picked her up near the highway. She’s currently on a flight back to her mother’s estate in Sicily, and she has been explicitly advised never to set foot in New Jersey again."

Ella’s eyes widened in shock. "You declared war on the Riccis? Just like that?"

"They declared war on us the moment they laid a hand on you," Luca corrected her, taking her hand in his large, scarred palm, his thumb gently tracing her knuckles. "For twelve years, I ruled this empire by building walls, by convincing myself that attachments were liabilities, that love was a weakness that would get me killed."

He lifted her hand and pressed a soft, lingering kiss to her wrist, right where the bruises had faded.

"I was wrong," he whispered, looking up into her eyes with absolute, unwavering devotion. "You aren't my weakness, Ella. You are my strength. You are the only reason I survived the dark."

Ella’s breath hitched in her throat. She reached out with her free hand, her fingers gently touching the sharp line of his jaw, tracing the edge of his lips. "And what happens now? Am I still your maid, Mr. Ferretti?"

Luca smiled—a rare, brilliant, breathtaking smile that transformed his harsh features into something extraordinary. He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, black velvet box, snapping it open to reveal a magnificent, vintage diamond ring that sparkled with fierce, eternal brilliance.

"Only if you agree to be the maid who owns the entire estate," he murmured, sliding the ring onto her finger. "The queen of the empire. My wife."

Tears welled in Ella’s eyes, but this time, they weren't tears of fear or exhaustion. They were tears of a completely new beginning. She leaned forward, wrapping her arms around his neck, and pulled him into a deep, passionate kiss that sealed their fates forever.

Downstairs, the estate buzzed with life, the dark shadows of the Gothic mansion finally chased away by the bright winter sun. The mafia boss had found his maid freezing in the snow, but in saving her, he had saved himself.
