Chapter 8 - The Last Recording

I didn't open the door.
Nathaniel guided me away from it while I called emergency services. Adrian spoke through the wood, calm and almost amused. He claimed to have a final recording that proved Victor Mercer had ordered Caroline's death.
“Slide it under the door,” I said.
A small flash drive appeared beneath the threshold.
“Now leave.”
Adrian laughed. “You sound like her.”
The building's backup lights came on as officers entered the stairwell. Adrian fled through the roof access. Investigators recovered his abandoned car three blocks away.
Evelyn arranged for the drive to be examined in a controlled lab. It contained genuine audio from Caroline's last week, but also malicious software intended to copy confidential files. Adrian had hoped we'd connect it to Nathaniel's network. The forensic team isolated the recording without exposing anyone's devices.
Caroline's voice filled the lab speakers.
“If I disappear, it wasn't an accident. Grant has threatened me, and Victor refuses to stop him. Thomas knows where the accounts are. Lily is innocent. Nathaniel was young when his father began this, but he has to choose what kind of man he will become.”
The recording ended with a small sound: a child laughing in another room.
Me.
I gripped Evelyn's hand. My mother had not been recording a dramatic farewell. She had been trying to leave evidence while I played nearby.
The investigators established that Caroline's fatal car crash had involved deliberate tampering, ordered through a contractor tied to Grant. Adrian had preserved the audio to blackmail his brother, not to seek justice.
Nathaniel went pale when he heard it. “I could have stopped them sooner.”
“You were responsible for your own choices,” I said. “Not every choice your father made.”
“I still have to answer for what I did.”
“Yes,” I said. “And I respect you more because you're doing it.”
Adrian contacted Lily that night, demanding money and safe passage. Instead she agreed to meet him at a monitored public location with law enforcement nearby. He was arrested after attempting to force her into a car. No shots were fired. Lily emerged shaken but proud of herself.
With Adrian in custody, the case finally moved toward trial. Prosecutors offered Nathaniel a negotiated resolution requiring testimony, restitution, the surrender of illicit assets, and a monitored restructuring of his remaining legitimate businesses. He accepted the conditions after independent counsel reviewed them.
At Caroline's grave, I placed a peppermint candy beside the flowers.

“I found the truth, Mom,” I whispered. “And I found people who don't ask me to disappear to keep them comfortable.”
Nathaniel waited at the gate until I waved him over.
