Chapter 4 - The Siege of the Vale Estate

The sharp, metallic echo of gunfire ripped through the silent manor, shattering the tense, fragile atmosphere of the study in an instant.

Downstairs, shouting voices erupted—heavy boots pounding against the marble foyer, followed by the furious chatter of automatic weapons fire.

Dominic’s expression transformed in a fraction of a second from calm introspection into absolute, lethal fury. The relaxed boss vanished, replaced instantly by the warlord who ruled the East Coast underworld.

"Stay behind the desk. Do not move," Dominic commanded, his voice sharp as steel. He pulled a sleek, heavy Beretta pistol from a concealed holster beneath his arm, checking the magazine with practiced speed.

"What's happening?" I gasped, ducking down as another round of gunfire echoed closer, rattling the glass panes of the study windows.

"Our rivals realized their abduction attempt at the diner failed," Dominic said darkly, striding toward the heavy mahogany double doors. "They've decided to storm the estate and take you by force."

Before he could reach the door, the lock mechanism clicked loudly, and Marcus Reed burst into the study, his suit jacket torn, a bloody graze across his forehead, and an assault rifle gripped tightly in his hands.

"Boss, we've got breach!" Marcus shouted over the distant sounds of battle. "The western gate was compromised by explosives. There are at least a dozen heavily armed mercenaries pushing through the ground floor. They bypassed the outer perimeter security—someone inside the syndicate leaked our defense codes!"

Dominic’s jaw tightened. "Who?"

"We don't know yet, but they're heading straight up the main staircase. They know you're in this study, and they know the girl is with you."

Dominic turned his dark, intense gaze back toward me where I cowered behind the heavy mahogany desk. For a split second, I saw raw hesitation flash across his eyes—not fear for himself, but concern for my safety. In the brutal world of the mafia, showing weakness or attachment to a civilian was a death sentence. Yet, looking at me, he didn't push me away.

"Marcus, secure the panic tunnel behind the library bookshelf," Dominic ordered, grabbing a second firearm from his desk drawer and tossing it expertly toward Marcus, who caught it with one hand. "Get Lily down to the reinforced vault."

"And you, Boss?" Marcus asked, racking the slide of his rifle.

"I'm going to remind them whose house this is," Dominic said, a cold, dangerous smile playing across his lips.

Before I could protest, Dominic walked over, grabbed my hand, and pulled me to my feet. His grip was firm, warm, and utterly unbreakable.

"Look at me, Lily," he said, his voice cutting through the chaos of gunfire downstairs. "No matter what happens out there, I am not going to let anything touch you. Do you trust me?"

Despite the madness surrounding us, looking into his dark, fierce eyes, I found myself nodding. "I trust you."

"Good." He pressed a small, cold steel key into my palm. "If I don't come back in ten minutes, use this key to open the vault door from the inside. There's a satellite phone on the desk inside. Call Mr. Sterling at the shipping line. He'll get you out of the country safely."

"I'm not leaving you here to die!" I cried out, my fingers tightening around his wrist.

Dominic’s expression softened for a fraction of a second. He leaned down, pressing a quick, fierce kiss to my forehead before handing me over to Marcus.

"Take her," Dominic ordered.

Marcus grabbed my arm gently but firmly, pulling me toward the bookshelf as the heavy wooden doors of the study began to splinter under the heavy blows of an axe or a battering ram from the hallway outside.
