Chapter 4 - The Closing NetBy 3:00 AM, the high-society gala had dissolved into quiet whispers and empty champagne flutes, but the real work was only just beginning.

Back in the penthouse suite overlooking the dark, brooding Chicago harbor, the city lights flickered like distant stars through the floor-to-ceiling windows. I kicked off my high heels, letting them drop onto the plush carpet with a dull thud, and rubbed my aching feet. The heavy emerald earrings sat on the marble side table beside my small evening clutch, glittering under the recessed lighting.

The door to the private study opened, and Rafael walked in, having shed his suit jacket and loosened his charcoal tie, the dark tattoos wrapping around his neck fully visible in the dim room. He walked over to the wet bar, poured two glasses of scotch, and handed one to me without a word.

I took the crystal glass, letting the cool weight ground me. "Silvano Greco's lawyers just messaged my firm," I said, my voice steady. "The North Harbor operational clearance has been fully transferred. Clarendon Logistics—under its new restructured charter—is officially back in business."

Rafael took a slow sip of his scotch, his dark eyes never leaving my face. "I told you that six months was more than enough time to rebuild an empire."

"You also said I could hold you to your word," I reminded him, stepping closer. "Does that apply to everything?"

"Try me."

"Why me, Rafael?" I asked, the question finally bursting past the defenses I had built up all evening. "Out of all the financial consultants, out of all the desperate corporate executives drowning in debt across this city, why did you step in to absorb my two-point-four-million-dollar liability? Why did you make me your fake fiancée?"

Rafael set his glass down on the marble bar with a soft click. He stepped forward, closing the distance between us until I could feel the heat radiating off his chest.

"Because three years ago, before Brendan Keyes ever stole a dime from you," Rafael said quietly, his voice dropping into a register that made my breath hitch, "you walked into a municipal zoning hearing representing a small, failing trucking firm. You stood up against three corrupt councilmen who tried to shake you down for bribes, and you told them that integrity wasn't for sale in this city."

I stared at him, stunned. "You... you were at that hearing?"

"I was sitting in the back row," Rafael confessed, a faint, rare smile touching his lips. "I watched a twenty-three-year-old girl tear down a rigged system with nothing more than a binder full of receipts and absolute fearlessness. I knew right then that if you ever had the right backing, you would conquer every board room in Chicago."

My heart hammered against my ribs, not out of fear, but out of an overwhelming, dizzying rush of validation. No one had ever seen me like that. Not my investors, not my college professors, and certainly not Brendan, who had spent years trying to diminish my intelligence to cover his own incompetence.

"And the fake engagement?" I whispered, my voice barely audible in the quiet room.

"That part wasn't entirely fake to begin with," Rafael admitted, reaching out to gently trace the line of my jaw with his thumb.

The touch sent a jolt of pure electricity straight down my spine. I didn't pull away. Instead, I leaned instinctively into his hand, closing my eyes for a fraction of a second to savor the warmth of his skin against mine.

"We still have five and a half months left on our contract," I murmured, opening my eyes to look straight into his dark, intense gaze.

"We do," Rafael agreed, his fingers sliding down to gently grip my waist, pulling me effortlessly against his chest. "And I intend to enforce every single day of it."

Before I could answer, his lips met mine.

It wasn't a desperate, frantic kiss born of adrenaline and panic. It was deliberate, slow, and consuming—a quiet sealing of a pact between two survivors who had carved their places out of a ruthless world. My hands found their way up to his shoulders, gripping the fabric of his charcoal shirt as the rest of the world outside the penthouse window simply melted away.
