Chapter 4 - The Federal Subpoena and the Collapse of Bridget’s Fantasy

The morning sun broke over Chicago with a cold, unforgiving light, casting sharp reflections across the gleaming glass facade of Northgate Systems' corporate headquarters. But inside the building, the atmosphere was thick with the suffocating stench of panic, betrayal, and absolute ruin.
Jerome sat at his glass executive desk, staring blankly at a stack of federal subpoenas that had been delivered by armed U.S. Marshals less than an hour after dawn. The Securities and Exchange Commission, along with the Department of Justice’s fraud division, had officially opened a criminal investigation into Northgate’s financial records.
The intercom on his desk buzzed sharply.
“Mr. Moretti?” his remaining junior assistant’s voice trembled through the speaker. “There... there’s someone here to see you. She’s refusing to leave.”
Before Jerome could answer, the heavy oak door of his office swung open with a violent slam.
Bridget Ford stood in the doorway. The champagne silk dress from the night before was gone, replaced by a rumpled designer trench coat. Her hair was unbrushed, and her face was blotchy from hours of crying. Gone was the arrogant, untouchable smirk she had worn at Selene.
“Jerome!” Bridget shrieked, rushing across the plush carpet and slamming her hands down onto his desk. “What is the meaning of this?! My personal credit cards have been declined! My apartment management just called to say my lease guarantee backed by Northgate has been canceled! And my lawyer won't even take my calls!”
Jerome slowly raised his bloodshot eyes to look at her. The man who had spent months showering her with luxury gifts, executive bonuses, and false promises now looked at her with a cold, venomous hatred.
“Your apartment guarantee?” Jerome repeated, his voice dangerously low. “Your luxury credit cards? Bridget, do you have any idea what you’ve done?”
“What I have done?!” she screamed, her voice cracking in hysteria. “You promised me we would weather this! You said Leona was just a quiet, useless trophy wife who wouldn't dare fight back!”
“She is the managing trustee of the Drayton family office, you absolute fool!” Jerome roared, surging to his feet and slamming his fists onto the glass desk, shattering a ceramic pen holder. “She didn't just walk away—she executed a premeditated, flawless corporate execution that took down my entire life in twelve hours! And you—you provoked her into the spotlight with your pathetic, arrogant slap!”
Bridget staggered backward, the color draining entirely from her face as the full, terrifying reality of her actions crashed down upon her. “I... I didn't know...”
“Get out,” Jerome whispered, pointing a shaking finger toward the door. “Pack your bags, clean out your desk, and never let me see your face again. Because if federal prosecutors connect your name to the shell company embezzlement schemes, you’re going to prison right beside me.”
Trembling uncontrollably, sobbing tears of pure terror and bitter regret, Bridget turned and fled the office, slamming the door behind her.

Jerome sank slowly back into his leather chair, burying his face in his shaking hands. The empire he had built on lies, arrogance, and the quiet sacrifice of a woman he never deserved was gone.
And out in the real world, Leona Chase was already stepping into a brilliant, unwritten future.
