Chapter 3 - The Trap at the Pier and the Breaking Point

By midnight, the rain had turned into a freezing downpour that lashed violently against the windshield of Damian’s SUV. We weren't at home; we were parked three blocks away from the abandoned municipal pier on the edge of Grayhaven’s industrial district.

In the back seat, bound tightly to a steel folding chair with heavy industrial zip-ties, sat Caleb Pierce. His face was pale, his expensive jacket soaked and mud-stained, and his eyes wild with sheer, unadulterated terror as he stared at the back of Damian’s head.

“Please!” Caleb sobbed, his voice cracking as he thrashed against his bonds. “I didn't mean it! Naomi, tell him to let me go! I was just desperate!”

I sat in the front passenger seat, staring out at the rain-slicked pavement. An hour ago, Marcus had scooped Caleb out of a dingy motel room downtown in less than twenty minutes. The ease with which Damian’s empire operated terrified me, yet for the first time since my father’s death, I felt an anchor of absolute safety holding me steady against the storm.

Damian turned off the engine. The silence inside the car was suffocating.

Without a word, Damian pushed open his door and stepped out into the freezing rain. He didn't use an umbrella. He walked slowly around to the side door, pulled it open, and looked down at Caleb with eyes as cold as the North Atlantic.

“You have a very bad habit of putting your hands where they don’t belong, Mr. Pierce,” Damian said, his voice cutting through the roar of the rain.

“I didn't know!” Caleb stammered, tears mixing with rainwater on his cheeks. “I swear I didn't know she was your actual woman! I thought it was just a fake contract for the media!”

Damian froze. His head tilted slightly. “A fake contract?”

Caleb swallowed hard, digging his own grave deeper. “Everyone in the underground knows! You needed a prop for society events, she needed cash for her old man’s debts! It’s a business arrangement! Why are you ruining my life over a hired fake fiancée?”

My heart stopped. I pushed my door open and stepped out into the rain, slamming the door behind me. The cold water hit my face instantly, but I didn't care. I marched straight up to Damian, my chest tight.

I waited for Damian to look away, to confirm Caleb’s words, to treat me like the hired employee I was supposed to be.

Instead, Damian turned his dark gaze away from Caleb and looked directly at me. The rain plastered his dark hair against his forehead, but his eyes burned with an intense, unwavering heat.

“Is that what you think this is, Naomi?” Damian asked softly, stepping closer to me, ignoring the shivering wreck behind him. “A business arrangement?”

“Isn't it?” My voice trembled slightly, exposed and vulnerable in the downpour. “Eighteen months, public appearances, separate bedrooms... that’s what the contract says, Damian.”

Damian reached out, his warm hand gently cupping my wet cheek, his thumb brushing away the raindrops. For a second, the storm, the debt, and Caleb vanished into nothingness.

“Contracts can be amended,” Damian whispered, leaning in so close I could feel the heat of his breath. “From the very first night you walked into my office with your head held high and your father’s burden on your shoulders, you were never a contract to me, Naomi. You were the only real thing in my entire world.”

Behind us, Caleb let out a pathetic whimper. “Are you guys... are you going to kill me?”

May you like

Damian didn't even look back at him. He kept his eyes locked on mine.

“Kill you?” Damian said coldly over his shoulder. “No. Killing you is far too merciful. You are going to sign over every penny of your illegal gambling debts to my legal team, you are going to leave the state of New Jersey by sunrise, and if you ever breathe Naomi’s name again, the ocean won't even give back your bones.”
