Chapter 4 - Someone Tried to Steal Their Newborn Twins From the Hospital—And Renzo Finally Had to Choose Between His Mafia Throne and Being Their FatherRenzo locked down hospital floor.

Nadia became furious.

“No armed men outside NICU.”

“They're protecting children.”

“They're frightening nurses.”

“One nurse photographed them.”

“We don't know nurse did it.”

“Someone did.”

Renzo was slipping.

Fear returning him to control.

Nadia recognized.

“Look at me.”

He did.

“You promised.”

His jaw tightened.

“I promised protect without controlling.”

“This feels like control.”

“My children were photographed by someone threatening them.”

“Our children.”

That stopped him.

“Our children,” he corrected.

“We need police and hospital security. Not your organization turning maternity floor into compound.”

He hated it.

But nodded.

“Okay.”

Federal investigators examined photo.

Reflection in incubator glass showed photographer.

Man.

Hospital orderly uniform.

Face partially visible.

Dominic Russo, Renzo's longtime consigliere, recognized him.

“Salvatore Coletti.”

Renzo froze.

“Your cousin?”

“Yes.”

Salvatore was son of Renzo's father's older brother.

Family branch excluded from leadership decades ago.

Salvatore believed Renzo had stolen birthright.

He had quietly supported Vittorio.

Now Romano arrested.

Salvatore wanted twins.

Why?

Succession.

If Renzo died, old organization could fracture.

Whoever controlled heirs could claim legitimacy.

Nadia stared at Renzo.

“This is exactly what I feared.”

He said nothing.

“This is why I didn't tell you.”

“I know.”

“I didn't want them born as symbols.”

“I know.”

“What are you going to do?”

Old answer:

Kill Salvatore.

New answer harder.

“End reason anyone wants them.”

“How?”

Renzo looked through glass at twins.

“End organization.”

Nadia stared.

“You can?”

“Not cleanly.”

“What does that mean?”

“I can dismantle criminal side, transfer legitimate holdings, cooperate.”

“You'll go prison.”

“Possibly.”

“Renzo.”

He turned.

“If I keep throne, they remain heirs.”

He pointed toward NICU.

“If I walk away and destroy throne, they're just children.”

Nadia couldn't speak.

“That's what you wanted.”

“Yes.”

“It's what I want now.”

She cried.

“Don't do it for me.”

“I'm not.”

He looked at son.

“I'm doing it because I finally understand inheritance can be curse.”

Renzo began cooperating.

Quietly.

Federal prosecutors offered structured agreement.

Full disclosure.

Financial records.

Names.

Properties.

Bribery.

Illegal gambling.

Extortion.

In exchange, consideration for cooperation.

No immunity.

Renzo refused immunity request anyway.

“I did things.”

His attorney stared.

“You understand prison exposure?”

“Yes.”

Nadia sat beside him.

He squeezed hand.

Then Salvatore made move.

At 3:07 a.m., fire alarm activated.

NICU evacuation.

Two fake firefighters entered.

Nadia saw one reach for Michael's incubator.

Something inside her knew.

“Stop!”

Man turned.

Renzo had gone home for first shower in days.

Nadia alone except nurses.

She grabbed metal IV pole.

“Step away from my son.”

Fake firefighter moved.

She swung.

Pole struck his arm.

Nurse triggered silent alarm.

Second man grabbed Nadia.

She screamed.

Then first collapsed.

Real hospital security tackled him.

Second dragged Nadia toward stairwell.

She fought.

Bit his hand.

He struck her.

She fell.

Before he could reach babies again, gunshot cracked.

Not Renzo.

Dominic.

Bullet struck floor near attacker's foot.

“Move again.”

Man froze.

Federal agents arrived.

Both arrested.

Salvatore's location traced.

Renzo reached hospital ten minutes later.

Saw bruise on Nadia's face.

His expression became something terrible.

“Who?”

“Already arrested.”

“Who hit you?”

“Renzo.”

“Name.”

“No.”

He stared.

“You're not doing this.”

“My family—”

“Is right here.”

She pointed toward NICU.

“Me. Michael. Elena.”

His breathing changed.

“If you leave to avenge bruise, you choose old family over this one.”

That hit.

Renzo looked at children.

Then Nadia.

Slowly anger changed.

He sat.

Hands shaking.

“I don't know how to do this.”

“Do what?”

“Be afraid without becoming violent.”

Nadia sat beside him.

“Learn.”

Simple.

Hard.

He nodded.

Salvatore arrested that morning.

Renzo didn't visit.

Didn't threaten.

Didn't order retaliation.

He testified.

That decision saved future.

Six months later Renzo pleaded guilty to federal charges related to organization he had controlled.

Because cooperation dismantled violent operations and led to convictions, prosecutors recommended reduced sentence.

Judge gave thirty months.

Nadia cried.

Renzo accepted.

Before surrender, he transferred legitimate Coletti Holdings shares into blind trusts benefiting twins with strict clause:

No control of criminal organizations.

No succession rights.

No family loyalty requirements.

Just financial security.

He sold mansion.

Nadia asked why.

“Too many ghosts.”

“Where will you live after prison?”

“I don't know.”

“Apartment?”

He looked offended.

“You can survive.”

“I have standards.”

She laughed.

Night before surrender, he came to Nadia's small apartment.

Twins asleep.

Michael in crib.

Elena beside him.

Renzo sat floor between them.

“I'll miss first steps.”

Nadia's throat tightened.

“Maybe.”

“First words.”

“Maybe.”

“Birthdays.”

“One or two.”

He looked down.

“I deserve sentence.”

“Yes.”

He nodded.

Not hurt.

Just truth.

“But they don't.”

“No.”

“Neither do you.”

“No.”

He looked at her.

“I won't ask you to wait.”

Nadia sat beside him.

“Good.”

Pain flashed.

She continued:

“I won't promise future I can't see.”

He nodded.

“But I will bring them to visit if safe.”

His eyes filled.

“And I will write.”

“Okay.”

“And when you come home, if you still want us…”

He looked at her.

“We start from beginning.”

“Beginning?”

“A date.”

A laugh through tears.

“You're mother of my children.”

“Still need ask me out.”

“Understood.”

He reached for her hand.

“Can I kiss you?”

Nadia smiled.

“Yes.”

He kissed her.

Not like masquerade.

No anonymity.

No alcohol.

No hidden face.

This kiss knew everything.

Maid.

Boss.

Babies.

Cruelty.

Apology.

Consequences.

Choice.

Next morning Renzo surrendered.

He served twenty-four months.

Nadia did not wait.

She lived.

Raised twins.

Started bookkeeping certification using money she saved.

Moved into modest two-bedroom apartment.

Worked remotely for legitimate Coletti subsidiary under independent management.

She visited Renzo once monthly.

Brought twins every third month when facility allowed.

Michael learned “Dada” from photograph.

Elena learned it from Michael.

When they said it during prison visit, Renzo turned away and cried.

Nadia pretended not notice.

At eighteen months he asked:

“Are you dating?”

“No.”

“Because of me?”

“Because I have twins and sleep four hours.”

He laughed.

“Fair.”

Then:

“Would you tell me if you were?”

“Yes.”

“Would I hate him?”

“Probably.”

“Would you behave?”

Pause.

“Yes.”

“Long pause.”

“Growth isn't instantaneous.”

She smiled.

At twenty-four months Renzo released early for cooperation and conduct.

Nadia didn't meet him outside prison.

Matteo did.

Renzo didn't complain.

Three weeks later he called.

“Nadia.”

“Yes?”

“Dinner.”

She smiled.

“Are you asking?”

“Yes.”

“Where?”

“Somewhere without masks.”

“Good.”

“And without armed guards.”

“Better.”

“Friday?”

She looked toward twins playing on carpet.

“Seven.”

“It's a date.”

Renzo hung up.

Nadia stared at phone.

Then Michael threw toy at Elena.

Elena screamed.

Nadia sighed.

Romance could wait five minutes.

Parenthood could not.

But across city, Renzo Coletti stood inside rented apartment holding phone and smiling like man who had just inherited world.

He hadn't.

May you like

He had given one away.

And somehow, losing empire was first thing that had ever made him truly free.
