Chapter 2

The years continued to pass, bringing new joys, and occasional, unavoidable challenges. Matteo had worked tirelessly, building a wall of absolute legitimacy around our family, but the shadows of Chicago were long, and deeply entrenched. One evening in late autumn, as the leaves turned bright, fiery shades of crimson and gold, a man from Matteo's past appeared at one of his restaurants. His name was Silvio, a relic of the old days, when fear was the only currency that mattered. He sat at a corner table, refusing to order, and demanded to speak with Matteo privately. I was at home, helping Anna with her complicated math homework, when Matteo received the call. His jaw tightened, a familiar, dangerous shadow crossing his features, but he did not reach for his coat with anger. Instead, he kissed my cheek, told me he would be back before the children went to bed, and left with a calm, measured stride. I did not panic, because I knew the man I had married, and I trusted the vows he had made to our family. When Matteo arrived at the restaurant, Silvio tried to leverage old debts, whispering threats about loyalty, and the inevitable consequences of walking away from the family. Matteo sat across from him, his posture relaxed, but his eyes entirely cold, and unforgiving. I do not owe you anything, Matteo said softly, his voice carrying the weight of a judge delivering a final verdict. Silvio scoffed, leaning forward across the pristine white tablecloth. You cannot simply erase who you are, Silvio sneered, because you bought a few nice suits, and married a pretty jeweler. Matteo did not raise his voice, nor did he signal his security team, who were standing discreetly near the kitchen doors. He simply pulled out a thick, manila folder, and slid it across the table. Inside were detailed, legally obtained documents, exposing Silvio's offshore accounts, and his quiet betrayals of his own associates. I am not erasing who I am, Matteo replied, I am simply evolving, while you are clinging to a sinking ship. If you ever threaten my family again, or step foot in my establishments, these files will be delivered to the federal prosecutor, and to the men you have been stealing from. Silvio paled, his arrogance evaporating instantly, replaced by raw, unadulterated terror. He stood up, leaving without another word, vanishing into the cold Chicago night. When Matteo returned home, the children were asleep, and I was waiting in the kitchen, holding two mugs of warm tea. He took off his coat, sighing deeply, and pulled me into a tight, desperate embrace. It is over, he whispered against my neck, the last thread has been cut, and they will never bother us again. I held him, feeling the tension slowly leave his broad shoulders, and marveled at his incredible strength. You fought a war tonight, I said softly, and you did it without shedding a single drop of blood. He pulled back, looking at me with eyes full of absolute, unwavering devotion. Because I promised you, he said, and a promise to you, is the only law I will ever blindly follow.
