Chapter 3 - Her Ex Sold Her Pregnancy Secret to the Mafia Boss’s Enemies—Then a Betrayal Inside His Own Family Put Their Unborn Daughter in DangerDonovan Hayes had spent most of his adult life believing loyalty was the only currency that mattered.

Money could be stolen.

Power could be challenged.

Businesses could collapse.

But loyalty, once earned, was supposed to remain.

Anthony Hayes had taught him that.

His uncle had been there after Donovan's father died.

He had attended school meetings.

Paid tuition bills.

Explained the family business.

And taught Donovan how to recognize betrayal.

Now Donovan stared at a photograph showing Anthony beside Victor Sloane.

The irony was almost unbearable.

Marcus Bell stood near the desk.

“Boss.”

Donovan looked up.

“How long?”

Marcus hesitated.

“We're still investigating.”

Donovan's jaw tightened.

“How long?”

Marcus exhaled.

“Possibly six years.”

Silence.

Donovan looked toward the window.

Six years.

That meant Anthony had been working with Sloane during several major business disputes.

During the warehouse fire that killed two employees.

During the failed expansion into Milwaukee.

During the attempted attack on Donovan's convoy.

Donovan closed his eyes.

He remembered Anthony's advice after each incident.

Be ruthless.

Trust nobody.

Strike first.

Now he wondered how many crises his uncle had created simply to keep him dependent.

He opened his eyes.

“Call Detective Ellis.”

Marcus nodded.

“And Donovan?”

He looked up.

Marcus hesitated.

“What about Maeve?”

Donovan's expression softened.

“Keep her informed.”

Marcus blinked.

“Everything?”

“Yes.”

Donovan looked toward the photograph.

“She deserves to know what kind of danger she's facing.”

Maeve learned about Anthony Hayes the next morning.

She sat at her kitchen table while Donovan explained.

Her hands rested protectively over her stomach.

For a long time, she said nothing.

Then she asked, “Your uncle?”

Donovan nodded.

“Yes.”

“The man who raised you?”

“Yes.”

Maeve looked down.

She understood betrayal.

Derek had spent five years convincing her that his love was unconditional.

Then he had used her savings.

Cheated.

Lied.

And humiliated her in public.

But this was different.

Anthony had been Donovan's family.

The person he trusted.

The person who should have protected him.

Maeve looked up.

“I'm sorry.”

Donovan stared.

“For what?”

“For what he did to you.”

His expression changed.

For a moment, he looked almost surprised.

Then he smiled sadly.

“Thank you.”

Maeve swallowed.

“What happens now?”

Donovan leaned forward.

“We work with the police.”

She nodded.

“And the baby?”

His expression softened.

“We keep her safe.”

Maeve looked down.

For the first time, she realized something important.

Donovan wasn't simply trying to protect her.

He was trying to become someone their daughter could trust.

And that mattered more than any expensive gift.

Meanwhile, Derek Collins was becoming desperate.

Victor Sloane had stopped returning his calls.

His bank accounts were nearly empty.

Several clients had canceled contracts.

And Paige had left him after learning about the payments.

Derek sat in his office staring at a stack of overdue notices.

His phone rang.

Unknown number.

He answered.

“Hello?”

A man's voice said, “You made a mistake.”

Derek went still.

“Who is this?”

“You were supposed to provide information. Not attract attention.”

Derek swallowed.

“I did what you asked.”

The voice hardened.

“You told Sloane about the pregnancy.”

Derek felt cold.

“Yes.”

“And now Hayes knows.”

Silence.

Derek looked toward the door.

“What do you want?”

The man paused.

Then said, “One more favor.”

Derek swallowed.

“What kind?”

“Get Maeve to meet you.”

Derek felt sick.

“Why?”

The voice hardened.

“Because she trusts you.”

Derek laughed bitterly.

“She hates me.”

“Then give her a reason to come.”

The call ended.

Derek stared at the phone.

For the first time, he understood that he had entered a world where people didn't accept apologies.

And where mistakes could cost more than money.

Two days later, Maeve received a message from Derek.

I KNOW YOU HATE ME.

BUT I HAVE SOMETHING THAT BELONGS TO YOU.

She stared at it.

Then another message appeared.

YOUR MOTHER'S NECKLACE.

Maeve felt cold.

Her mother had died when she was twenty-one.

The necklace was a small gold pendant shaped like a crescent moon.

It wasn't expensive.

But it had been her mother's favorite.

After the breakup, Derek claimed he couldn't find it.

Maeve had cried for days.

Now he was using it to lure her somewhere.

She knew that.

And yet the thought of recovering it hurt.

She called Donovan.

He answered immediately.

“Maeve?”

She explained.

He listened.

Then said, “Don't go.”

She nodded.

“I wasn't planning to.”

A pause.

Then she whispered, “But I want it back.”

Donovan's expression softened.

“I know.”

He continued.

“We'll ask Detective Ellis to handle it.”

Maeve nodded.

“Okay.”

For a moment, she felt proud.

The old Maeve might have gone alone.

Hoping Derek would finally do something kind.

Now she understood that wanting something didn't mean she had to risk herself to get it.

Detective Mara Ellis arranged a controlled meeting.

Derek agreed to bring the necklace to a public location.

Officers waited nearby.

Maeve did not attend.

Instead, she remained at Donovan's penthouse, where she had temporarily moved after the threatening photograph.

She had resisted the idea at first.

The apartment was enormous.

Too luxurious.

Too unfamiliar.

But Donovan had given her a separate bedroom.

A key.

And complete freedom to leave.

He had even asked which furniture she wanted removed so the space would feel less intimidating.

Maeve had laughed.

“Most of it.”

Donovan smiled.

“Done.”

She shook her head.

“I was joking.”

He raised an eyebrow.

“Were you?”

She laughed again.

For the first time, the penthouse began to feel less like a fortress.

And more like a home.

The meeting with Derek went wrong.

He arrived without the necklace.

Instead, he carried a phone.

He demanded to speak with Maeve.

When officers approached, he panicked.

He tried to run.

Then shouted that Victor Sloane would kill him.

Detective Ellis detained him.

During questioning, Derek admitted he had been working with Sloane.

He also admitted Anthony Hayes had contacted him.

But the most important information came later.

Derek revealed that Anthony planned to force Donovan into surrendering control of several shipping companies.

Maeve's pregnancy was supposed to be leverage.

And the threatening photograph was only the beginning.

Donovan listened to the recorded confession in silence.

Marcus stood beside him.

Detective Ellis sat opposite.

When the recording ended, Donovan looked toward the window.

Then asked, “Where is Anthony?”

Ellis hesitated.

“We're trying to locate him.”

Donovan nodded.

She continued.

“We need you to stay out of it.”

He looked at her.

“I understand.”

Ellis studied him.

“Do you?”

Donovan met her eyes.

“Yes.”

For years, he would have handled betrayal with violence.

He would have called his men.

Issued orders.

Made examples.

But now he thought of Maeve.

And their daughter.

He wanted a different future.

Not one built on fear.

One built on trust.

He looked at Ellis.

“Tell me what you need.”

That evening, Maeve found Donovan standing on the balcony.

The city glittered below.

He looked exhausted.

She approached quietly.

“Bad day?”

He laughed softly.

“Something like that.”

She stood beside him.

For a moment, neither spoke.

Then she asked, “Do you miss him?”

Donovan looked at her.

“Anthony?”

She nodded.

He considered.

“Yes.”

Maeve swallowed.

“Even after what he did?”

Donovan looked toward the lake.

“Especially after what he did.”

His voice softened.

“It's strange. You can hate what someone did and still miss who you thought they were.”

Maeve felt tears rise.

She understood.

She had spent months grieving Derek.

Not the man he was.

But the man she had believed he could become.

She reached for Donovan's hand.

He held it.

For a long moment, neither spoke.

Then Donovan whispered, “I'm sorry you got dragged into this.”

Maeve shook her head.

“You didn't make Derek betray me.”

He looked at her.

“And you didn't make Anthony betray you.”

Donovan's expression softened.

She continued.

“We're both learning that.”

He smiled sadly.

Then leaned closer.

Slowly.

Giving her time to move away.

She didn't.

Their lips met.

The kiss was gentle.

Unhurried.

And for the first time in months, Maeve felt something other than fear.

Hope.

The next morning, Anthony Hayes was arrested.

Police recovered documents linking him to Sloane's operations.

Financial records.

Messages.

Payments.

And evidence of planned coercion.

Victor Sloane was also detained after investigators uncovered additional crimes.

The threat against Maeve and her baby began to unravel.

But the investigation revealed something Donovan hadn't expected.

Anthony had arranged the death of Donovan's father years earlier.

The man who raised him had helped destroy his family.

Donovan sat in his office staring at the evidence.

For a long time, he couldn't speak.

Then he picked up his phone.

And called Maeve.

She answered immediately.

“Donovan?”

His voice broke.

“Can you come sit with me?”

May you like

Maeve didn't ask why.

She simply said, “I'm coming.”
