Chapter 4 - Nadia Walked Down the Aisle Knowing Her Groom Had Kidnapped Her Daughter—Then Lucien Marais Entered the Church and Said, “You’re Not Marrying Him”Saturday arrived beneath a cloudless New Orleans sky.

Saint Catherine’s Church filled with three hundred guests.
Politicians.
Business owners.
Doctors.
Old families.
People who believed they were attending a wedding.
Nadia stood in the bridal room wearing ivory silk.
Her mother adjusted the veil.
“You don’t have to do this.”
Nadia looked at her.
“Yes, I do.”
“No.”
Evelyn took her hands.
“You spent years believing you owed Rémi because he saved us.”
Tears filled her eyes.
“He didn’t.”
“I know.”
“And even if he had, your life would not be payment.”
Nadia’s throat tightened.
She hugged her mother.
Margot was safe with Thierry.
Lucien had argued for an hour about not being the person assigned to protect her.
Nadia insisted.
“You want to help me?”
“Yes.”
“Then protect our daughter.”
That ended the argument.
Or so she thought.
The music began.
Nadia walked down the aisle.
Rémi waited.
Handsome.
Perfect.
Smiling.
Nadia looked at him and remembered her father.
Lucien.
Margot.
Five years stolen because one man believed wanting a woman gave him the right to engineer her life.
She reached the altar.
The priest began.
Rémi whispered:
“You look beautiful.”
Nadia smiled.
“You look nervous.”
“I’m getting married.”
“Are you?”
His smile weakened.
The ceremony continued.
Hidden beneath Nadia’s dress was a microphone.
Federal investigators listened from two blocks away.
They needed Rémi to admit enough.
The priest asked whether anyone knew a lawful reason the marriage should not proceed.
Silence.
Nadia almost laughed at the irony.
Then the church doors opened.
Every head turned.
Lucien Marais stood beneath the archway.
Black suit.
No tie.
No visible weapon.
Thierry beside him.
Margot holding Lucien’s hand.
Nadia’s eyes widened.
This was not the plan.
Lucien looked directly at her.
“You’re not marrying him.”
Four words.
The church exploded in whispers.
Rémi’s face went white.
Nadia should have been furious.
She almost was.
Then Margot ran down the aisle.
“Mommy!”
Nadia crouched and caught her.
“Why are you here?”
Margot whispered:
“Daddy said the bad man changed the plan.”
Lucien approached.
Rémi stepped forward.
“Get out.”
Lucien ignored him.
“Nadia, he knows about the wire.”
Everything changed.
Rémi’s hand moved inside his jacket.
Federal agents entered through the side doors.
Rémi grabbed Nadia.
A gun appeared.
Guests screamed.
Lucien stopped.
Rémi pressed the weapon against Nadia’s ribs.
Margot screamed.
Thierry pulled the child away.
Nadia became very calm.
Trauma medicine had taught her something fear never had.
Panic was expensive.
Rémi backed toward the side door.
“You ruined everything.”
Nadia looked at him.
“No.”
“You were supposed to marry me.”
“I was never supposed to belong to you.”
“I saved your family!”
“You murdered my father.”
His face twisted.
“He was going to destroy everything.”
The church became silent.
Nadia heard the hidden microphone beneath her dress.
Rémi continued.
“My father gave him opportunities. Cedric became self-righteous.”
“You ordered his death.”
“I ordered him stopped.”
There.
Confession.
Nadia looked toward Lucien.
He understood.
Rémi did too.
His eyes dropped to her dress.
“The wire.”
Nadia moved.
She drove her elbow backward.
The gun fired.
Lucien lunged.
Nadia hit the floor.
Federal agents swarmed Rémi.
Lucien reached Nadia.
“Where are you hit?”
“I’m not.”
He checked anyway.
“Nadia.”
“I’m fine.”
Margot ran toward them.
Lucien pulled both Nadia and Margot against him.
Rémi screamed as agents dragged him away.
“You think he’s better?”
Nadia looked back.
Rémi laughed bitterly.
“He kills people!”
Lucien became still.
Nadia looked at him.
This truth remained.
Lucien was not a businessman with an unfortunate reputation.
He led a criminal organization.
A happy ending could not require Nadia pretending otherwise.
Rémi saw hesitation.
His smile returned.
“You don’t know what he is.”
Nadia stood.
“No.”
She looked at Lucien.
“But I’m going to.”
Rémi was taken away.
The church emptied.
Nadia sat in a pew wearing her wedding dress.
Lucien sat beside her.
Margot slept against Thierry’s shoulder nearby.
Neither spoke for several minutes.
Finally Nadia said:
“How many people have you killed?”
Lucien did not lie.
“Three.”
Her stomach tightened.
“Why?”
“One was the man who murdered my brother.”
“That’s revenge.”
“Yes.”
“Another?”
“A man who tried to kill Thierry.”
“And the third?”
Lucien looked down.
“My uncle.”
Nadia stared.
“He ordered my father’s death and was preparing to kill me.”
Silence.
“You could have gone to police.”
“Yes.”
“But you didn’t.”
“No.”
Nadia removed her veil.
“I can’t build a life around that.”
Lucien nodded.
“I know.”
His acceptance hurt.
“You aren’t going to argue?”
“No.”
“You aren’t going to promise you did it for family?”
“I did do it for family.”
He met her eyes.
“That doesn’t make it right.”
Nadia swallowed.
“What happens to the Marais organization?”
“I’ve been dismantling the illegal operations since I returned.”
She blinked.
“What?”
“The weapons investigation is part of it.”
Lucien explained.
He had inherited an empire built on crime.
He could have walked away.
Instead he decided to convert the legitimate assets and gather evidence against the remaining criminal partners.
“That’s why Deslandes wanted you dead.”
“Yes.”
“You’re cooperating with federal authorities?”
“Through attorneys.”
“For immunity?”
“Limited protection for information. Not immunity for homicide.”
Nadia stared.
“You could go to prison.”
“Yes.”
“And you still came here?”
“My daughter was here.”
His eyes met hers.
“And you were here.”
Nadia looked away.
Lucien continued.
“I don’t want you waiting for me.”
“What?”
“If I’m charged, you live.”
His voice broke slightly.
“You raise Margot. You love someone else if you want. You do not turn your life into a monument to me.”
Nadia stared at him.
Five years earlier he had disappeared because he believed love meant making the painful choice alone.
Now he was giving the choice back.
“I hate when you become emotionally intelligent.”
His mouth almost curved.
“I’m trying.”
Nadia took his hand.
“I’m not promising forever.”
“I know.”
“I’m not marrying you.”
“I know.”
“I’m definitely not marrying anybody today.”
“Reasonable.”
She leaned her head against his shoulder.
“But I’m also not walking away today.”
Lucien closed his eyes.
“That’s enough.”
Outside, Rémi Deslandes was driven away in federal custody.
Inside, Nadia sat beside the man she had loved before either of them understood what love actually required.
The wedding had failed.
For the first time in years, Nadia felt free.
May you like
But freedom was not the same thing as a happy ending.
That still had to be earned.
