Chapter 2 - The Mask Crumbles“Sophia isn’t back in Chicago because she loves me, Claire,” Vincent whispered, his voice trembling as he stepped into the small entryway of my apartment, pushing past my initial resistance. “She’s back because her father’s syndicate lost fifty million dollars to the Russian Bratva, and they came to collect.”

I backed away from him, holding Oliver tighter against my shoulder. The rain outside slammed violently against the narrow apartment window.

“What does any of your criminal garbage have to do with me and my boys?” I demanded, keeping my voice low so as not to scare Noah in the living room. “You signed the divorce papers. You traded your family for your childhood sweetheart. You got what you wanted, Vincent!”

“I didn’t want it!” Vincent suddenly roared out, catching himself instantly as Noah flinched in the other room. Vincent dropped to his knees right there on the scuffed linoleum floor of my tiny hallway. The mighty Don of the Moretti family, kneeling in a dingy apartment hallway, looking up at me with tears welling in his bloodshot eyes.

“I forced you to leave, Claire,” he choked out, pressing his face against his hands. “I acted like an unfeeling bastard on purpose. I stepped around Noah. I let you sign away every dollar. I watched you walk out that door into the dark, and it nearly killed me.”

I stared down at him, my mind spinning into complete, chaotic confusion. “What are you talking about?”

“Sophia’s father, Marcus Reynolds, placed a hit on my family two months ago,” Vincent revealed, his voice shaking with raw horror. “They planted a micro-explosive under Noah’s bed at the Lake Forest estate. They showed me high-resolution surveillance photos of Ethan and Oliver in their nursery with laser sights trained on their cribs. Marcus told me that if I didn’t dissolve my marriage, publicly humiliate you, and marry Sophia to merge our corporate assets, he would execute my wife and children.”

My knees went completely weak. The small hallway seemed to tilt on its axis. I stumbled back, clutching the wall for support.

“You... you lied to me?” I whispered, tears blurring my vision. “All of it? The coldness? Stepping around Noah?”

“If I showed you affection that night, if I fought for you, Marcus’s spotters outside the estate would have known you were still my weakness,” Vincent wept quietly, looking up at me with an agonizing expression. “I had to make the entire world believe I hated you. I had to make Marcus believe you were worthless to me so he would take his eyes off you and the boys.”

“You let my son believe his father didn’t love him!” I shrieked softly, my tears spilling over my cheeks. “Noah cried for three weeks straight, asking why Daddy didn’t want him anymore!”

“I know!” Vincent slammed his fist against his own thigh in absolute agony. “Do you think I don’t see his face every time I close my eyes? Every single night for two months, I sat in that empty Lake Forest house holding Noah’s stuffed bear, knowing my son hated me! But you are alive, Claire! You and the boys are breathing! That was the only thing that mattered to me!”

I collapsed into the small wooden chair by the coat rack, my body trembling uncontrollably as the gravity of his confession crashed over me. The man I had believed to be a heartless monster had burned his own soul alive just to keep a target off our backs.

“And Sophia?” I asked, wiping my face. “What is she?”

“Sophia is Marcus’s operative,” Vincent spat out her name with pure, unadulterated venom. “She spent six years in Europe building connections with the Bratva. She isn’t my first love, Claire—she was my handler when I was younger. She manipulated me for a decade. But three days ago, my private security team finally located the Bratva’s main weapons depot in South Chicago.”

He stood up from the floor, his posture straightening, his dark eyes flashing with a terrifying, lethal purpose that reminded me exactly who Vincent Moretti was.

“I wiped them out, Claire,” he said coldly. “Marcus Reynolds is dead. Sophia is currently in federal custody facing life in prison for domestic terrorism. The threat to my family is officially destroyed.”

I looked at him, my heart hammering wildly against my ribs. “If the threat is gone... why are you here looking like you’ve seen a ghost?”

May you like

Vincent took a slow, agonizing step toward me, his hands shaking as he reached out to gently touch Oliver’s soft baby hair.

“Because Marcus left me a final gift before he died,” Vincent whispered, his voice cracking. “A legal document sealed in a Swiss vault, dated six years ago. A document that proves my father’s death wasn’t an accident... and proves that your biological family’s bankruptcy was personally orchestrated by the Moretti board to force you into marrying me.”
