Chapter 3 - The Trap ClosesFallon turned around frantically, her high heels squeaking against the polished hardwood floor, and tried to sprint toward the front mahogany doors of the estate.

"Don't bother wasting your breath or ruining your shoes running, Miss Marsh," Hugo called out calmly from the dining room table without even bothering to turn his head to look at her. "Two senior officers from the State Financial Crimes and Racketeering Division are already waiting in the front driveway. They possess a signed federal warrant for your arrest on charges of grand larceny, corporate espionage, and wire fraud."

Right on cue, the heavy front door of the estate creaked open loudly, and two uniformed state troopers accompanied by a detective in a trench coat stepped into the marble foyer.

Fallon let out a sharp, piercing shriek of rage and frustration as the officers grabbed her arms, pinning them behind her back and clicking heavy steel handcuffs tightly around her manicured wrists. "Clay! Do something, you pathetic idiot! Help me! Call your lawyers!" she screamed hysterically as she was dragged out through the front door into the freezing November night.

Clay sat completely motionless at the dining table, looking like a hollow, broken shell of a human being. His entire constructed world—his inflated ego, his luxury business, his mistress, his elaborate web of lies, and his family standing—had completely collapsed into toxic ash in less than ten minutes.

Hugo turned away from the doorway to face me. In an instant, the terrifying, unyielding federal judge completely vanished, replaced by a grieving, deeply heartbroken father-in-law.

"Blythe," Hugo said softly, his deep voice cracking with genuine, raw emotion. He walked over to me, looking down at my bruised, lipstick-stained face with profound regret. "I am so deeply, profoundly sorry that my foolish, selfish son brought this absolute filth into your life. You have been a loving, loyal, brilliant, and incredible wife to a man who did not deserve a single second of your devotion."

"Hugo..." I whispered, my voice breaking as tears finally spilled over my burning eyelashes, washing away the greasy stain of coral lipstick from my cheekbone. "My inheritance... is it really gone? Am I ruined?"

"Not a single penny of your parents' hard-earned money is gone, my dear girl," Hugo reassured me gently, reaching into his inner blazer pocket and pulling out a separate, crisp legal document bearing fresh court stamps. "As the primary managing trustee of the Whitfield Family Trust, I exercised my emergency fiduciary power two hours ago before coming to dinner. I officially stripped Clay of his entire equity share in the development firm, along with his personal real estate portfolio and luxury vehicles, and legally transferred them directly into your name to fully satisfy the fraudulent loan guarantees."

Clay lifted his head in pure, unadulterated shock, his voice cracking with absolute desperation. "Father! No! You can't do that! You stripped me of my own company? You gave everything I built to Blythe?"

"You stripped yourself of your company and your dignity the moment you chose greed over honor, Clay," Hugo replied coldly, looking down at his pathetic son with absolute, icy disgust. "You are no longer an executive officer of the Whitfield Development Group. Effective immediately, you are completely unemployed, penniless, and facing a massive federal criminal indictment for wire fraud and embezzlement unless Blythe personally chooses to show you mercy in court."

Eloise stood up from her chair, stepped over to my side, and wrapped her arms tightly around my shaking shoulders, pulling me into a warm, fierce embrace. "You are my real daughter, Blythe," Eloise whispered directly into my hair, her own warm tears wet against my neck. "No matter what happens between you and this foolish boy, this family will always stand by you, protect you, and love you."

Clay scrambled out of his dining chair, dropping heavily onto his knees on the hard floor right beside me like a desperate beggar. He reached out with trembling, sweaty hands, trying frantically to grab the hem of my dress.

"Blythe... please! Look at me! Please!" Clay sobbed hysterically, wiping tears, sweat, and snot from his red face with his sleeve. "I was so stupid! I was completely manipulated and brainwashed by Fallon! She set me up from day one! You heard my dad! Please, talk to my father... don't do this to me! I love you! I've always loved you, Blythe! You're my wife!"

I stood there, looking down at the man I had spent four long years loving, serving, defending, and building a life with.

I saw no residual charm in his bloodshot eyes. No power. No intelligence. No strength. I saw only a weak, pathetic, deeply selfish coward who had willingly stood by and allowed another woman to strike me across the face because he was terrified of losing his stolen money and his fake status.

I slowly took two steps backward, stepping completely out of his desperate, reaching grasp.

"You didn't love me when you walked her into this house on your arm tonight, Clay," I said, my voice steadying with a cold, unstoppable, crystal-clear clarity I hadn't known I possessed. "You didn't love me when you stood there and watched her hand slam across my cheek. You loved your own fragile ego, and now you can spend the rest of your life living with the consequences of your choices."

I looked at Hugo and Eloise, offering them a small, deeply respectful, and infinitely grateful nod. "Thank you for saving me tonight. Thank you for the dinner. I am going home."

Without casting a single backward glance at my husband weeping and begging on his knees on the dining room floor, I turned my back on him forever and walked out into the cool, clean autumn night air.
