Chapter 4

CHAPTER 4 — Secrets of the Syndicate
I stood tall over the sole surviving tactical operator,
his crushed leg firmly pinned beneath the heavy,
shattered remains of the granite kitchen island,
blood pooling darkly on the floor.
He looked up at me weakly through a cracked,
blood-smeared tactical visor,
his breathing terribly ragged,
clearly recognizing the advanced combat technique I had just used to completely disable his squad.
"You're...
you're the Ghost of Firebase Delta,"
he choked out painfully,
coughing up thick,
dark crimson blood onto his tactical vest.
"Who exactly sent you to my home?"
I demanded coldly,
pressing the hot,
smoking barrel of my gun aggressively against his shattered,
bleeding knee.
"You actually think Simon Thorne was the boss?"
he laughed weakly,
a wet,
terrible rattling sound echoing from deep within his ruined chest.
"He was barely a drop in the ocean,
Marcus,"
he gasped,
his eyes rolling back slightly in extreme pain.
"The Syndicate completely owned his sophisticated software,
they owned the secret backdoors into the pentagon servers he built,
they controlled everything from the shadows."
"You didn't just ruin a powerful family,
you completely blinded a massive,
global surveillance network,
and they desperately want their eyes back,"
he sneered,
spitting blood onto my boots.
He reached suddenly for a hidden cyanide capsule cleverly concealed in his tactical collar,
intending to end his own life,
but I was much faster,
ripping the heavy Kevlar vest completely off his body before he could bite down,
denying him the easy way out.
"Tell me exactly where the shadow board meets,
give me the location,
or I will make your inevitable death last significantly longer than Simon's entire prison sentence,"
I growled deeply,
twisting the gun barrel into his wound.
He looked directly into my cold eyes,
seeing the absolute,
terrifying lack of human mercy shining there,
and he finally broke completely under the pressure,
giving me a highly classified set of encrypted coordinates hidden deep in upstate New York.
I bound his severe wounds tightly,
just enough to keep him breathing for the authorities to find him,
then quickly went upstairs to retrieve Callie from the secure panic room.
She looked silently at the utter destruction,
at the thick blood splattered on my torn clothes,
but there was absolutely no fear in her beautiful eyes this time,
only a grim,
unshakable determination mirroring my own.
"They won't ever stop hunting us,
will they,
Dad?"
she asked softly,
her strong voice perfectly steady despite the horrific carnage surrounding us.
"No,
they won't ever stop,"
I replied honestly,
packing a heavy tactical duffel bag with meticulously forged passports,
heavy military-grade weapons,
and untraceable bearer bonds.
"So we are going to travel to New York,
find their secret headquarters,
and we are going to stop them first,
permanently."
I grabbed the keys to my backup vehicle,
leaving the burning ruins of our quiet life behind,
stepping out into the cold night,
fully prepared to wage a one-man war against an invisible empire.
There would be no more hiding,
no more running away from the shadows,
because I was about to become the darkest shadow of them all.
We drove off into the darkness,
May you like
leaving the sirens wailing in the distance,
driving straight toward the heart of the beast that dared to threaten my daughter.
