CHAPTER 3: THE BETRAYAL
CHAPTER 3: THE BETRAYAL
At 11:47 p.m., my phone rang.
Unknown number.
I answered immediately.
"Hannah?"
"No."
The voice belonged to my attorney.
"Trevor, where are you?"
"At home."
"Stay there."
His tone made my chest tighten.
"What's happening?"
There was a long pause.
Then he said:
"The FBI raided your headquarters tonight."
I nearly dropped the phone.
"What?"
"They received financial evidence this afternoon."
I looked down at the report.
Hannah.
She had turned everything over.
My attorney continued.
"Richard Collins was arrested."
I sat down hard.
The room spun.
Then came the next sentence.
"And so was your brother."
I couldn't breathe.
My brother.
Ethan.
My younger brother had worked as Operations Director for years.
The report suddenly made sense.
The approvals.
The internal access.
The missing records.
The manipulated contracts.
They had done it together.
Richard and Ethan.
Millions stolen.
Employees laid off.
Investors misled.
Families hurt.
And I never saw any of it.
Because I was too busy destroying my marriage.
My attorney's voice softened.
"Trevor... Hannah actually protected you."
"What?"
"If she wanted revenge, she could have let investigators think you were involved."
Silence.
"Instead she spent six months proving you weren't."
I closed my eyes.
Every late night.
Every spreadsheet.
Every secret meeting.
She wasn't plotting against me.
She was trying to save me.
Even while I betrayed her.
Then my attorney delivered the final blow.
"She found the fraud the same week she discovered your affair."
The room went completely still.
For six months...
Hannah had known everything.
May you like
And still kept fighting to protect me.
Until tonight.
