Chapter 5

CHAPTER 5 — Checkmate
Six months had passed since the morning I destroyed Harold Pierce. The trial had been swift and merciless. With the safety inspector's testimony and the mountain of financial evidence, Harold's expensive lawyers couldn't save him. He was sentenced to life in a maximum-security federal penitentiary, without the possibility of parole. His assets were seized, his reputation incinerated, and his name erased from the polite society that once worshiped him. My mother had miraculously avoided prison by cooperating fully with the FBI, though her social standing took a massive hit. She had finally humbled herself, realizing the monster she had harbored in her inner circle. I stood on the massive outdoor terrace of the penthouse, looking out over the glittering skyline of Manhattan. The evening air was warm, carrying the faint sounds of the city below. Inside the living room, the sounds were much louder, and infinitely more beautiful. Laughter. I turned and looked through the floor-to-ceiling glass doors. Emily was sitting on the plush rug, playing a chaotic game of Uno with Johnny, Paul, and Lily. The fear was completely gone from their eyes. Johnny, who used to flinch at loud noises, was currently arguing loudly about a Draw Four card, a wide grin on his face. Paul was meticulously organizing his cards by color, looking relaxed and happy. And Lily... Lily was wearing a bright pink princess dress over her pajamas, sitting on Emily's lap. They were healthy. They were safe. They were legally, permanently mine. The adoption papers had been finalized two weeks ago. Emily looked up from the game, catching my eye through the glass. Her smile was radiant, a pure, blinding light that chased away every shadow in my life. She put her cards face down and walked out onto the terrace to join me. She slipped her arms around my waist, resting her head against my chest. "They're cheating," she whispered playfully. "All three of them. They formed an alliance against me." I chuckled, wrapping my arms around her and kissing the top of her head. "You'll just have to learn to be as ruthless as they are." "I think I've had enough ruthlessness for one lifetime," she sighed, looking out at the city lights. "Thank you, Nathan." "For what?" I asked softly. "For believing me. For fighting for them. For giving us a life I didn't even dare to dream about." I pulled her back slightly so I could look into her eyes. "You have it backward, Emily," I told her. "I lived in a sprawling mansion that felt like a tomb. I had all the money in the world and no one to share it with." "You didn't just bring life into my world. You saved me." I gently touched the strap of her elegant silk evening dress. I slid it down, just enough to reveal the top of the scar Harold had given her. I leaned down and pressed a soft, reverent kiss to the jagged white line. It was no longer a mark of shame or fear. It was a symbol of her incredible strength, her survival, and her fierce love for her family. Emily shivered, leaning up to press her lips against mine. The kiss was deep, slow, and filled with a passion that had only grown stronger over the last six months. Suddenly, a loud tap on the glass interrupted us. We pulled apart and looked back into the living room. Johnny was standing at the glass door, holding up his Uno cards triumphantly. "I won!" he shouted through the glass. "Dad! I beat her!" My heart stalled in my chest. Dad. He had never called me that before. It had always been Nathan, or Uncle Nathan. Emily gasped, her hands flying to her mouth as tears immediately sprang to her eyes. I looked at the ten-year-old boy who had fought so hard to protect his siblings. He was looking at me not as a savior, or a rich man, but as a father. I smiled, the greatest, most genuine smile of my entire life. I opened the glass door and stepped back inside. "You won?" I asked, picking Johnny up and spinning him around as he laughed. "Then I guess the champion gets to choose the movie tonight." Lily cheered, running over and grabbing my leg. Paul quietly stacked the cards, smiling up at me. Emily stood in the doorway, watching the chaotic, beautiful mess of our family. The rumors didn't matter. The whispers were silenced. The past was buried forever. I married the housekeeper everyone whispered about. And I became the luckiest man in the world.
