Chapter 5

The morning of the meeting, the atmosphere in the apartment was suffocating.
My mother arrived with a flourish, accompanied by two men in expensive suits—the family lawyers.
They sat at my kitchen table, looking like funeral directors waiting for a body.
"Everything is in order, Jake," the lead lawyer said, sliding a thick stack of documents toward me.
"This gives your mother full control over your assets, including the hardware store and your personal accounts, in the event of your 'mental health decline.'"
My mother smiled at me, a soft, predatory smile.
"Just sign it, dear. It will make everything so much easier for you."
I looked at the papers, then at the door.
"I have one question," I said.
"Ask away," she purred.
"Why did you really hate her?"
The room went still.
The lawyers exchanged nervous glances.
My mother’s smile didn't falter, but her eyes went black.
"Because she didn't know her place, Jake. She thought she could take my son away from the life I built for him."
"She loved me, Mom. That's a crime to you, isn't it?"
"Love is a distraction. Control is a legacy."
I pushed the papers away.
"I'm not signing."
My mother’s expression sharpened.
"Jake, don't be a fool."
"I'm not being a fool," I said, standing up.
"I'm being a husband."
I walked to the front door and threw it open.
Detective Miller and four uniformed officers stood there, weapons holstered but hands ready.
My mother’s face drained of all color.
"What is this?" she screeched, her voice losing its melodic veneer.
"This is the end of the line, Mrs. Thorne," Miller said, stepping into the room.
"You are under arrest for the aggravated assault and torture of Megan Thorne, and for the conspiracy to kidnap and coerce a pregnant woman."
My mother looked at the officers, then at the lawyers, who were already backing away.
"You can't do this!" she screamed, lunging at me.
"You ungrateful, pathetic little boy!"
The officers moved in, pinning her arms behind her back.
She fought with a strength that was terrifying, a wild, cornered animal.
As they dragged her out, she looked back at me, her eyes burning with a hatred that I knew would haunt me for the rest of my life.
"I made you!" she shrieked.
"I built you, and I will destroy you!"
I didn't answer.
I just watched as she was handcuffed and shoved into the back of a squad car.
The weight that had been crushing my chest for months suddenly vanished.

The silence that filled the apartment wasn't terrifying anymore.
It was peaceful.
