Chapter 1

"I was the most feared son of a billionaire mafia boss, and I made it my mission to humiliate every housekeeper who entered our mansion. But when I tried to destroy one quiet young woman, she did something nobody had ever dared to do. Six months later, I sat in a police station with blood on my face, begging the officers to call the very woman I once swore I'd break.

At seventeen, I was untouchable.

My name was Adrian Cavanaugh. My father, Julian Cavanaugh, controlled half of Fairhaven, and the other half was terrified of him.

Money could erase my mistakes. Power could silence my enemies.

But neither could bring my mother back.

After she died, our mansion became a beautiful prison filled with four angry boys and a father who barely remembered we existed.

My three brothers and I had one rule: Never let anyone get close.

Four housekeepers had quit in fourteen months.

Then Eleanor Hargrove arrived.

She couldn't have been much older than twenty-five. No expensive clothes. No trembling hands. Just calm brown eyes that seemed to notice everything.

I hated her immediately.

On her first morning, I walked into the kitchen, grabbed the breakfast she'd prepared, and dumped it into the garbage.

""Here's your first lesson,"" I sneered. ""I don't eat food unless I order it.""

The servants froze.

Eleanor glanced at the trash, then quietly opened the warmer and removed another plate.

She placed it before me.

""Good thing I made extra,"" she said. ""Now sit down before it gets cold.""

My jaw tightened.

""Do you know who I am?""

""Yes,"" she replied. ""A hungry boy with terrible manners.""

Nobody breathed.

I stepped closer, furious.

""I can have you fired before lunch.""

Eleanor met my eyes.

""Then fire me. But threatening me won't make your breakfast taste better.""

For the first time in my life, someone had challenged me without fear.

And I wanted her gone.

But Eleanor refused to disappear.

When my youngest brother smashed a vase, she helped him clean it up.

When another refused to speak for days, she quietly left his favorite meals outside his bedroom.

When I screamed that she wasn't our mother, her answer stopped me cold.

""I know,"" she whispered. ""I'm not trying to be.""

Weeks passed.

Something strange happened.

My brothers started laughing again.

The kitchen filled with conversations.

And somehow, without asking permission, Eleanor became the person we all searched for when life became unbearable.

Then came the afternoon I nearly ruined everything.

A fight at school. A boy rushed to the hospital. Police questioning me while my father's lawyers demanded answers.

The officer slid a phone across the desk.

""Who should we call?""

I stared at my father's number.

Then I whispered, ""Eleanor Hargrove.""

""Your mother?""

""No.""

""Your legal guardian?""

I shook my head, fighting tears.

""She's the only person who'll come because she cares.""

But when Eleanor arrived at the station, she wasn't alone.

And the person standing beside her made my blood run cold.
