Chapter 5 - Reigning as Queen of My Own Empire—The Ultimate Happy Ending

Three years later, the architectural landscape of Manhattan bore the undeniable signature of my vision.

As the newly appointed Chief Executive Officer and majority owner of *Hayes & Bennett Global Developments*, I had successfully spearheaded some of the largest, most prestigious urban renewal projects on the East Coast. My face graced the covers of business journals and architectural digests, not as a mob boss’s quiet, invisible wife, but as an independent, self-made billionaire titan of industry.

I had built an empire of my own—one forged from brilliance, resilience, and unyielding self-respect.

On a bright, gorgeous Saturday afternoon in late spring, I stood on the expansive private wrap-around terrace of my triplex penthouse in Tribeca, holding a crystal flute of vintage champagne. The Manhattan sun sparkled brilliantly across the Hudson River, casting a golden glow over the bustling city below.

Alexander Hayes walked out onto the terrace, wearing a crisp linen shirt and a warm, genuine smile, handing me a fresh tablet report.

“The London board meeting was a massive success, boss lady,” Alexander said, clinking his glass gently against mine. “Their municipal council unanimously approved our waterfront master plan.”

I smiled, taking a sip of the chilled champagne. “Thank you, Alex. It’s been a lot of late nights, but it was entirely worth every single hour.”

“You know,” Alexander chuckled, leaning against the glass railing and looking down at me with warm affection, “looking at you now compared to three years ago when you stepped off that private jet... it’s like looking at a completely different person. You carry the energy of a true queen.”

“I’m just a woman who finally remembered her own worth,” I replied softly.

Life after Vincent Moretti had taught me that no matter how powerful, terrifying, or wealthy a partner might be, no woman should ever spend her life waiting in the shadows hoping to be chosen. Love shouldn't feel like an endurance test.

As for Vincent?

Word from the Chicago underworld filtered through legal channels every now and then. Following our explosive divorce, the Moretti syndicate had faced unprecedented pressure from federal investigators and rival gangs. Stripped of my financial management and distracted by crushing grief and regret, Vincent had eventually stepped down from active street leadership, handing control over to a council of senior capos, and retreated into a quiet, reclusive life on a remote estate outside the city. He never remarried. He never looked at another woman. He spent his remaining days living in the heavy shadow of the greatest mistake of his life—knowing he had let the only real treasure he ever possessed slip right through his arrogant fingers.

But I never looked back.

I turned away from the shimmering skyline view, walked back inside the sunlit, art-filled penthouse, and smiled deeply to myself. My heart was light, my future was limitless, and my crown was securely in place.

I wasn't running from anyone anymore. I was reigning over a life I had built with my own two hands.

And our happily ever after was just beginning.
