Chapter 4 - Her Ex-Boyfriend Accused Her of Stealing Millions From the Mafia Boss's Company—But When Victor Revealed the Security Footage, the Entire Ballroom Turned Against Him

The message arrived while Nadine was driving across the Chicago River.
Khloe read it three times before the words settled into meaning. Liam Carter was the beneficiary of a trust associated with Northline, the company whose shipping paperwork carried her forged signature. He had told her he was looking for work when they met. He had complained about rejection letters and unpaid bills. He had borrowed money for interviews that apparently never happened.
Now there was a legal structure behind his name, and a man named Peter Voss behind the structure.
"Pull over," Khloe said.
Nadine found a space beside a closed pharmacy. Rain ticked against the windshield as Khloe showed her the photograph Elena Park had sent. Nadine studied it without speaking.
"Don't call him," Nadine said finally.
"I wasn't going to."
"You're already holding your phone like you're about to throw it through his window."
Khloe lowered her hand. "I spent three years apologizing for his mistakes. What if he was never making mistakes?"
"Then we establish what he knew, when he knew it, and who paid him. We do it without giving him a chance to destroy evidence."
Nadine had become Khloe's attorney after the shipping allegations surfaced. She had also become the one person who refused to confuse Khloe's exhaustion with helplessness. Khloe appreciated the distinction more than she could say.
She forwarded Elena's photograph to Nadine's secure address and asked Elena to preserve the original file. Then she opened her bank app. The balance was painfully ordinary. She had worked overtime for months to replace what Liam had taken. He had called her controlling when she asked about the missing savings. He had cried when she threatened to leave. He had promised a future every time she demanded an explanation of the present.
"He knew my passwords," she whispered.
Nadine turned toward her. "Did he know your work credentials?"
"No. My company required a security key. But he knew my habits. He knew where I kept my old laptop, and he knew I used the same coffee shop every Saturday."
"That's not proof he accessed anything. It's a reason to examine the logs."
Khloe nodded. The discipline of separating suspicion from evidence was the only thing keeping her upright.
At nine the following morning, her employer summoned her to a disciplinary meeting. The invitation was marked urgent and included a representative from corporate legal. Khloe arrived with Nadine, her own laptop, and a notebook filled with dates. She had slept three hours. She wore the same camel-hair coat that Liam had mocked at the Obsidian Room.
The conference room held six people. Her department director, Martin Cole, sat at the head of the table. Two compliance officers occupied one side. Across from them sat Liam.
Khloe stopped in the doorway.
"Why is he here?"
Martin cleared his throat. "Mr. Carter has information relevant to the investigation."
Liam smiled. "Hello, Chlo."
"You have no right to call me that."
"Please," Martin said, "we're trying to keep this professional."
Nadine set her briefcase on the table. "Then perhaps begin by explaining why my client's former partner is present at a workplace investigation into documents he had no authority to access."
Liam leaned back. "Because I know where the money went."
The room went quiet.
He produced a printed bank statement with several transactions highlighted. According to the document, Khloe had received payments from a shell consultancy called Westbridge Advisory. The amounts totaled more than two million dollars.
Khloe stared at the page. The account number was not hers. Her name appeared beside an address she had never used.
"This is fabricated," she said.
"That's what you said about the shipping approvals," Liam replied.
Martin looked uncomfortable. "Mr. Carter alleges you used your position to approve unauthorized transfers, then routed compensation through a third party."
"And you invited him here before verifying a single account number?" Nadine asked.
One compliance officer admitted that the document had arrived overnight from an anonymous source. Liam claimed he had volunteered to identify Khloe because he was concerned for the company.
"Concerned," Khloe repeated. "You grabbed me hard enough to leave bruises in a restaurant three nights ago."
Liam's smile vanished. "Don't twist what happened."
"There are witnesses," Nadine said. "And a police report."
Martin tried to interrupt. Khloe raised her hand.
"Before anyone makes another accusation, I want the source of that bank statement, the original electronic file, and the authorization for inviting a third party into this room. I also want a record of every person who accessed my employment files during the last six months."
She spoke steadily, although her hands were shaking beneath the table.
Liam laughed. "Listen to her. She thinks she can give orders."
"I think I can ask questions," Khloe replied. "You always hated that."
The conference room door opened. Elena Park stepped inside, accompanied by a senior investigator from the company's outside audit firm.
"We need to stop this meeting," Elena said.
Martin frowned. "Elena, this is confidential."
"Then someone should have considered confidentiality before circulating an unverified document bearing the name of an employee under investigation. The original Northline application has been preserved. Its metadata contradicts the copy in this room."
She handed the investigator a sealed drive.
Liam rose halfway out of his chair. "That's irrelevant."
"Sit down," Nadine said, without raising her voice.
For a moment he looked as though he might shout. Then his phone vibrated, and he glanced at the screen. Khloe saw his expression change from irritation to fear.
He stood. "I have to go."
Martin objected, but Liam was already at the door. The investigator asked him to leave contact information. Liam muttered that they could speak to his lawyer and disappeared into the corridor.
Khloe wanted to follow. She remained seated instead.
Elena explained that the Northline application had been created months before Khloe was assigned to the Russo account. It contained an encrypted reference to the trust that named Liam as beneficiary. More troubling, the electronic signature attributed to Victor had been imported from an archived contract rather than generated through the normal approval system.
"Someone built a paper trail backward," Elena said. "They wanted the transactions to look as though they originated with both of you."
Martin's face lost color. He suspended the disciplinary proceeding and authorized the outside investigator to preserve the relevant systems. Khloe was not reinstated yet. She understood why. She also understood that the people who had doubted her now had something harder to dismiss than her word.
At noon, Victor called.
"Nadine told me about the meeting," he said. "Are you safe?"
"I'm angry."
"That wasn't the question."
"I'm at my sister's. There are two locks and a very loud dog. Does that satisfy you?"
"Partly."
She could hear traffic behind his voice. "Victor, did you know about Westbridge Advisory?"
A pause. "I've heard the name. Adrian used it for consulting invoices."
"Liam says it paid me two million dollars."
"It didn't."
"You can't know that."
"I know because our forensic accountants traced the transfers this morning. The receiving account belongs to a company controlled by a nominee associated with Adrian Bell. Someone pasted your name onto a summary sheet."
Khloe sat on the edge of her sister's kitchen chair. "Can you prove it?"
"We have the bank's confirmation of the actual account holder. Nadine will get it through proper channels."
"Good."
"There's something else. Adrian is hosting a fundraising dinner tonight. He plans to announce an independent investigation into Russo Holdings. Liam is on the guest list."
Khloe closed her eyes. "They're going to accuse me in public."
"That appears to be the plan."
"Then I want to be there."
"Khloe—"
"Don't tell me it's dangerous and offer to handle it. If he uses my name in front of a room full of people, I will answer in front of the same room."
Victor was silent long enough that she thought the call had dropped.
Then he said, "I was going to ask whether you wanted a seat beside me."
She exhaled. "I do."
That evening, the fundraiser filled a private ballroom above the lake. Gold light washed across the marble floor. The room smelled of expensive flowers and polished wood. Khloe entered with Nadine on one side and Victor on the other. She wore a dark green dress borrowed from her sister. She had refused Victor's offer to buy her something new.
People turned when they saw them. Some recognized Khloe from the restaurant incident. Others knew only that Victor Russo rarely attended events he did not control.
Adrian Bell stood at the podium beneath a banner celebrating ethical commerce. Valeria DeLuca waited beside him in silver silk, looking delighted by the attention.
"Ladies and gentlemen," Adrian began, "tonight we confront an uncomfortable truth. A trusted logistics employee appears to have diverted funds through fraudulent approvals."
A screen illuminated behind him. Khloe's name appeared in enormous letters above the false Westbridge statement.
Murmurs spread through the ballroom.
Liam stepped onto the stage. He wore a tailored jacket Khloe had never seen before. "I lived with Khloe Hayes," he said. "I know how she thinks. She always wanted more than she earned."
Khloe felt a familiar coldness settle in her chest. She remembered him blaming her for their empty bank account, then telling friends she had become obsessed with money. The lie had changed clothes, but not its shape.
"He knows exactly how to hurt you," Victor said quietly.
"Yes," she replied. "And now I know how to answer."
Adrian invited questions. Khloe stood.
"Mr. Bell, will you identify the financial institution that issued the statement behind you?"
Adrian's smile faltered. "The details are under review."
"Then why are you publishing my name before verifying them?"
Valeria stepped forward. "This is hardly the place for a disgraced employee to make demands."
"You put my name on a screen," Khloe said. "You made it the place."
A few guests shifted in their seats. Victor remained beside her, his expression unreadable.
Liam pointed at her. "You see? She can't accept responsibility."
"I accept responsibility for my work," Khloe answered. "I don't accept responsibility for your fiction."
Nadine approached the event technician and presented a letter from the outside auditor requesting that the false statement be removed. Adrian protested. Then Victor rose.
"Before anyone leaves," he said, "there's a recording you should see."
The technician looked to Adrian. Adrian shook his head. Victor did not threaten him. He simply handed the technician a storage device and said, "This is footage from a camera at my company's records office. It was preserved by our security department and supplied to the investigators. The people in it have been identified."
Nadine confirmed that the clip had been reviewed by counsel and that its release was limited to the individuals who had already made public allegations. Khloe watched Victor carefully. She had told him she would not accept fabricated evidence even in her own defense. He had listened.
The screen changed.
A timestamp appeared. In the footage, Liam entered a restricted records room alongside Derek Sloane, the former contractor Khloe had identified at the mansion. Derek opened an archive cabinet. Liam held up a folder bearing Khloe's name. The next frame showed him photographing a signature sheet while Derek connected a portable drive to a workstation.
The clip did not show a theft of millions. It showed something more precise: access to documents Liam had sworn he had never seen.
Gasps rippled across the ballroom.
Liam stared at the screen. "That could be anyone."
"The access badge belongs to Derek Sloane," Victor said. "The visitor log carries your signature. The original video is with investigators."
Adrian seized the microphone. "This proves nothing about the payments."
"Correct," Khloe said. "It proves the man accusing me secretly accessed my records. The payments require separate proof. Which is why I didn't stand on a stage and call anyone guilty before checking."
That distinction changed the room. People who had been ready to believe a dramatic accusation began asking why Adrian had shown a bank statement without a bank's authentication. A donor demanded to know whether his own information had been handled with the same care. Another guest walked out.
Valeria tried to pull Adrian aside. He brushed her away.
"You planned this," he hissed at Victor.
"No," Victor replied. "You planned it. I kept the evidence."
Liam backed toward a side door. A uniformed officer who had arrived with the outside investigators asked him to remain for questions. Liam looked at Khloe, searching for the old expression that meant she would rescue him from the consequences of his choices.
She gave him nothing.
The event ended in confusion. Adrian's sponsors withdrew their names from the program. The fraudulent slide was removed, and the outside audit firm issued a statement saying the alleged payments had not been substantiated.
Khloe did not mistake that for victory. Her employment status remained unresolved. The trust remained unexplained. Liam's participation in the records-room intrusion was only one piece of a much larger scheme.
Outside, a cold wind lifted her hair as she waited for Nadine to finish speaking with the investigators.
Victor stood beside her. "You handled that better than I would have."
"You would have frightened everyone into silence."
"Probably."
"Silence is how Liam got away with things for so long."
Victor nodded. "Then we won't build this case on silence."
For the first time that night, Khloe smiled.
Her phone buzzed. A message from an unknown number appeared over a photograph of a shipping container at the South Branch rail yard.
YOU THINK THE VIDEO SAVED YOU? ASK VICTOR WHAT WAS INSIDE CONTAINER 4417 WHEN HIS FATHER DIED.
Khloe looked at Victor. The smile vanished from his face before she even showed him the message.
"Where did you get that number?" he asked.
"I don't know."
"Khloe, listen carefully. That container was sealed twelve years ago."
"What happened twelve years ago?"
He looked across the black water of the lake.
May you like
"My father was murdered."
And for the first time since she met him, Victor Russo looked afraid of the truth.
