Chapter 2 - The Exposed Photographs and the Shattered IllusionThe television screen in Roman’s penthouse living room glowed with a harsh, cold light.

On screen, a split-screen layout showed two distinct images. The first was a high-resolution photograph taken from the terrace of the Cartagena villa: Roman Vescari standing with his arm around Celine Marr, both of them holding glasses of wine, the date and timestamp clearly visible—June 14, 3:12 a.m.
The second image was an official press release timestamped from Seattle, confirming that Claire Whitmore Vescari had given birth to a healthy baby boy at 6:47 a.m. on that exact same morning.
Below the images, a scrolling financial news ticker reported that Vescari Shipping Holdings had lost four percent in early European trading following rumors of internal instability.
Denny Cole stood by the floor-to-ceiling windows, his hands clasped behind his back, staring out at the city lights.
“It wasn’t a leak from our regular channels,” Denny said quietly. “Someone pulled security camera footage from the coastal resort. Someone with clearance. Or someone who wanted it out there immediately.”
Roman didn’t move. He sat in the dark armchair across from the dead television screen, the remote dangling loosely from his right hand. The silence in the penthouse was no longer just heavy; it was suffocating.
“Celine,” Roman said, his voice dangerously low.
“Gone,” Denny replied. “She packed her things two hours before the images hit the wires. Left a note on the vanity saying she always believed in honesty.”
A dark, humorless sound escaped Roman’s throat. Honesty. The word tasted like poison.
“Find her,” Roman ordered, the familiar steel returning to his tone. “Not to bring her back. Just find out who paid her to be standing on that terrace at three in the morning with a glass of vintage wine while my wife was in labor.”
“You think she was planted?”
“Everything in our world is an arrangement until proven otherwise,” Roman said, standing up. His broad shoulders squared. For the first time in days, the numbness gave way to pure, unadulterated focus. “Where is Claire?”
Denny hesitated. “She’s not at her sister’s house. We checked the Providence medical records. Her legal team filed an emergency protective order and a temporary restraining order four hours ago. She’s completely off the grid, Boss. Even our private trackers can’t pierce her legal firewall. She used a shell corporation registered in the Cayman Islands to lease a private estate on San Juan Island.”
Roman froze. San Juan Island. A secluded retreat surrounded by cold Pacific waters, accessible only by ferry or seaplane. A place designed for people who wanted to disappear from the world.
“Get the helicopter ready,” Roman said immediately.
“Boss, if you fly out there now while she has an active restraining order, her legal team will have you arrested before you touch down. She’s a brilliant financial attorney. She didn’t just leave—she built a legal fortress around herself and the boy.”
Roman stared at the dark screen. For twenty years, whenever a door was locked, he had kicked it down. Whenever a man stood in his way, he removed him.

For the first time in his life, violence wouldn't work. If he forced his way onto that island, he would prove every single fear Claire had harbored into a permanent reality.
“Then we don’t kick the door down,” Roman whispered, more to himself than to Denny. “We wait until she lets me in.”
