Chapter 4 - The Ultimate Betrayal—When Blood Turns Out to Be the EnemyInside the walk-in cooler, the air was bitter and smelled of stale yeast and aging cheese, but Nicolo couldn't take his eyes off the small glass window.

Sophia was out of cover. She stood in the center of the shattered cafe, her Sig Sauer locked open on an empty slide. Click. Click. Empty.

The last remaining tactical operator stepped out from behind the concrete pillar, his assault rifle leveled directly at her chest. He was breathing heavily, his black visor reflecting the flickering neon sign outside.

"End of the line, Ghost," the operator rasped through his comms unit. "Asset secured. Target neutralized."

Sophia didn't look scared. She didn't look defeated. She slowly lowered the empty pistol, letting it slide from her fingers onto the checkered floor where it clattered against a pool of spilled espresso.

"You talk too much," she said softly.

A shadow detached itself from the dark doorway of the kitchen corridor.

Nicolo pressed his face against the cold glass of the cooler door, his heart stopping entirely.

The man stepping into the light wasn't wearing tactical gear. He wore a tailored charcoal suit, his silver-threaded hair neatly combed, holding a gold-plated lighter in his right hand.

Marco.

"It's always a pleasure, Sophia," Marco said, his voice smooth and cold as river ice. "I told you years ago in Vienna that your retirement wouldn't last."

Sophia turned slowly to face him, a faint, bitter smile touching the corner of her lips. "Marco. I should have known. Nobody else in the syndicate is stupid enough to hire clean-up crews that use government-issue munitions."

"Business, my dear," Marco sighed, stepping carefully over a body. "The council decided that the old guard needed... pruning. Nicolo was getting too comfortable. He thought family loyalty meant something in the twenty-first century. And you? Well, you knew too many names from the old days in the directorate. You were a loose end."

Marco turned toward the walk-in cooler and caught Nicolo’s eye through the glass. He raised a hand in a mocking, brotherly salute and tapped the keypad on the exterior wall.

BZZZZT.

The electronic lock engaged with a final, terminal sound. The temperature control lights flickered red. Marco had just locked down the refrigeration system, sealing the unit into an airtight, freezing tomb.

"Goodbye, brother," Marco said, turning back to Sophia. "Now, let's talk about those offshore accounts you buried in Zurich before you faked your death."

Nicolo beat his fists against the thick steel door, screaming curses that were swallowed entirely by the heavy insulation. He was trapped, freezing, and utterly helpless while the brother he trusted prepared to execute the only person who had tried to save him.
