CHAPTER 6: The Livestream That Destroyed Her Perfect Image
CHAPTER 6: The Livestream That Destroyed Her Perfect Image
By sunrise, Vanessa's video had passed half a million views.
The comments poured in faster than anyone could read them.
"Stay strong, Mama."
"Jealous relatives are the worst."
"We're praying for your beautiful family."
People donated money.
Brands commented with heart emojis.
Influencers shared her post, praising her for "taking the high road."
Every lie made my stomach turn.
Not because strangers believed her.
Because Lily was asleep upstairs while millions of people defended the woman who had hurt her.
At 9:15 a.m., Detective Sarah Mills called.
"We've reviewed the first video."
"And?"
Her answer came without hesitation.
"We need the original files."
"You'll have them."
"We're also requesting a search warrant."
My pulse quickened.
"For Vanessa's house?"
"Yes."
"There may be additional electronic devices that haven't been wiped."
Nicole, sitting across from me, suddenly looked up.
"Oh no."
"What?"
"I forgot about the office computer."
"The what?"
"Vanessa never livestreamed from her phone."
"She controlled everything from a desktop in her home office."
She grabbed her laptop.
"If she hasn't destroyed it yet..."
"...it's all still there."
At exactly 11:02 a.m., three police vehicles pulled into Winslow Ridge.
Neighbors peeked through their windows.
Delivery drivers slowed to watch.
Vanessa opened the front door wearing a cream-colored sweater and a practiced expression of confusion.
She smiled politely.
"Officers, can I help you?"
Detective Mills held up the warrant.
"We're here to seize electronic devices related to an ongoing investigation."
The smile disappeared.
"I'm sure there's been some misunderstanding."
"There hasn't."
Daniel appeared behind her.
"Do you really need to do this?"
"Step aside, sir."
Within minutes, officers carried out laptops.
Hard drives.
Camera equipment.
External storage devices.
Ring lights.
Memory cards.
Even the home server hidden inside a custom cabinet.
Vanessa's face grew paler with every box that left the house.
Across the street, curtains moved.
Neighbors watched everything.
Phones came out.
Videos started recording.
The woman who had spent years controlling every camera angle was suddenly being filmed by everyone else.
She hated it.
She walked toward Detective Mills.
"I have three hundred thousand followers."
The detective didn't even look up.
"Today you're a subject in a criminal investigation."
That afternoon, Nicole called me.
"They found it."
"What?"
"The office computer."
She sounded almost breathless.
"It automatically backed up every livestream."
"Even the deleted ones?"
"Everything."
I closed my eyes.
Vanessa had spent years carefully editing reality.
Now reality was about to edit her.
At four o'clock, another call came.
This time from Detective Mills herself.
"We found something unexpected."
My grip tightened around the phone.
"What is it?"
"There wasn't just one hidden recording."
I frowned.
"What do you mean?"
"The office computer contained over two hundred archived livestream sessions."
She paused.
"Many continued recording after the public broadcast ended."
I sat upright.
"So..."
"So we now have hours of footage your sister-in-law never intended anyone to see."
By evening, the first consequences began.
One by one, Vanessa's sponsors quietly disappeared from her social media profile.
The children's clothing company removed her discount code.
The organic food brand deleted their partnership announcement.
A toy manufacturer erased every advertisement featuring Chloe.
Nicole refreshed the page.
"They're dropping her."
Another refresh.
"And another one."
Emma looked over my shoulder.
"How many sponsors did she have?"
"Twelve."
By dinner time...
Only three remained.
At 7:30 p.m., Daniel finally appeared on my porch.
This time he came alone.
He looked exhausted.
His clothes were wrinkled.
His eyes were bloodshot.
He didn't ask to come inside.
He simply stood on the porch.
"I didn't know."
I stared at him.
"You were in the video."
"I know."
"You smiled."
"I know."
"You said, 'You finally did it.'"
His shoulders slumped.
"I thought..."
His voice broke.
"I thought Vanessa had only trimmed Lily's hair."
I said nothing.
He continued.
"She told me Lily wanted to donate it."
I remembered the video.
The blood.
The crying.
The scissors.
"You saw your niece bleeding."
"I know."
"And you believed that?"
He covered his face.
"I failed her."
For the first time since this nightmare began...
I believed he was telling the truth.
But belief wasn't forgiveness.
Before leaving, Daniel handed me a small envelope.
"I found this hidden in Vanessa's desk."
Inside was a folded sheet of paper.
It wasn't a letter.
It wasn't a receipt.
It was a handwritten list.
Across the top, in Vanessa's elegant cursive, were five chilling words:
Things to Fix Before Summer
Below them were bullet points.
Lose eight pounds.
Replace patio furniture.
Teach Chloe to smile naturally.
Then...
My breathing stopped.
The fourth item read:
Cut Lily's braid before family photos.
The paper slipped from my fingers onto the floor.
Daniel looked at me with tears in his eyes.
"I swear to you..."
"I had never seen that list before."
I slowly picked it up again.
There was one final item written underneath.
Smaller.
Almost as if she'd added it later.
Make sure Rachel never finds out why.
For the first time...
I realized the haircut itself had never been the real secret.

There was something even worse.
Something Vanessa had been trying desperately to hide all along.
