Chapter 3 - MY HUSBAND'S EX-FIANCÉE CONFESSED WHY SHE REALLY RETURNED—BUT WHEN HER BROTHER TARGETED ME, DANTE HAD TO CHOOSE BETWEEN HIS FAMILY'S EMPIRE AND THE WOMAN HE HAD DRIVEN AWAY

The police arrived at Claire's apartment that afternoon.

I gave them the messages.

The photographs.

And copies of the document I'd discovered.

An investigator named Detective Sarah Ellis listened carefully.

"Mrs. Moretti, do you know who might be responsible?"

I hesitated.

"I have suspicions."

"Tell me."

I explained Valentina's return.

The hidden document.

And the connection to the Duca family.

Detective Ellis took notes.

Then looked at me.

"Have you told your husband?"

"Yes."

"Does he know where you're staying?"

I shook my head.

"Not the exact address."

She nodded.

"Good. For now, keep it that way."

***

Dante arrived at the police station later that evening.

Not with guards.

Not with threats.

With a lawyer and a folder of corporate records.

Detective Ellis met him in an interview room.

"I understand your wife found something unusual."

Dante nodded.

"I believe the documents may relate to transactions my father handled before his death."

"Are you willing to cooperate?"

"Yes."

The detective studied him.

"That could expose your family to serious legal consequences."

Dante looked down.

"I know."

"Then why are you here?"

He thought about Isabella's note.

Protecting me is not the same as respecting me.

Then he answered:

"Because hiding the truth is how this started."

***

Meanwhile, Valentina was beginning to understand that her brother had deceived her.

Alessandro had promised he only wanted financial records.

He claimed their father had been cheated by Vittorio Moretti.

He said recovering the money would restore the Duca family name.

But when Valentina learned that Isabella was receiving threats, she confronted him.

They met in a private office above an abandoned warehouse.

"You said nobody would get hurt."

Alessandro looked up from his desk.

"Nobody has."

"Someone is threatening Isabella."

He shrugged.

"Then she should return what she took."

Valentina stared at him.

"You knew she had the document?"

"Of course."

"How?"

Alessandro smiled faintly.

"Because I've been watching that house for months."

Valentina felt cold.

"What have you done?"

He leaned back.

"Nothing that wasn't necessary."

She shook her head.

"Dante will find out."

Alessandro laughed.

"Dante is too busy trying to save his marriage."

Then he added:

"And by the time he understands what's happening, the evidence will already be gone."

***

That evening, I met Dante in a quiet conference room at the police station.

He stood when I entered.

For a moment, neither of us spoke.

He looked exhausted.

His eyes were shadowed.

His shirt was wrinkled.

I'd never seen him look so ordinary.

"Hi," he said.

"Hi."

He glanced toward the chair.

"Can I sit?"

I nodded.

He sat across from me.

"I'm sorry about what happened at the house."

I looked down.

"Dante—"

"No. Please let me finish."

I met his eyes.

He swallowed.

"I treated you like someone who lived in my world instead of someone building a life with me."

My chest tightened.

He continued.

"I thought making decisions quickly was the same as making them well."

I said nothing.

"I was wrong."

For a moment, the room was silent.

Then I asked:

"Why did you bring Valentina home?"

He considered the question.

"Because she was injured. And because I believed I could control the situation."

"And why didn't you tell me?"

His expression changed.

"Because I didn't think I had to."

The honesty hurt.

But it mattered.

Dante continued.

"That was the problem."

***

We spent the next hour reviewing the documents.

I explained the shipping codes.

The unusual insurance values.

And the possibility that the painting concealed evidence of financial misconduct.

Dante listened.

He didn't interrupt.

Didn't dismiss my observations.

Didn't call Marco to take over.

For the first time in our marriage, he treated my expertise as something valuable.

When I finished, he looked at me.

"You're good at this."

I raised an eyebrow.

"I'm aware."

He smiled faintly.

"I should have said it more often."

***

Two days later, investigators uncovered a connection between Alessandro Duca and a series of fraudulent shipping transactions.

The scheme had begun years earlier.

Both the Duca and Moretti organizations had been involved in the original business arrangement.

But the evidence suggested Alessandro had later diverted funds and falsified records to conceal his role.

Vittorio Moretti appeared to have discovered the fraud.

Rather than reporting it, he had hidden copies of the records inside valuable artwork.

The documents could expose several people.

Including members of the Moretti family.

***

Dante made a decision that shocked his advisers.

He authorized an independent audit.

Opened relevant records to investigators.

And suspended several executives whose names appeared in the transactions.

Some of his oldest associates protested.

"You're destroying your father's legacy," one told him.

Dante looked at the man.

"My father's legacy is exactly what we're investigating."

***

I learned about the decision from Detective Ellis.

For a long time, I sat quietly.

Dante had always protected his family's reputation above everything else.

Now he was risking it.

Not to impress me.

But because the truth mattered.

It was the first real sign that something inside him was changing.

***

Valentina contacted me the following evening.

I almost ignored the call.

Then I answered.

"What do you want?"

Her voice trembled.

"To apologize."

I closed my eyes.

"For what?"

"For the shirt."

I said nothing.

She continued.

"I took it from the laundry room. Dante never gave it to me."

I stared at the wall.

"Why?"

"Because I wanted you to believe he still cared about me."

The admission stung.

Valentina began crying.

"I was jealous."

I swallowed.

"Of what?"

"Of the life you had with him."

I almost laughed.

"You have no idea what my life was like."

"I know."

She paused.

"And I'm sorry."

***

Then her voice changed.

"Isabella, there's something else."

I sat straighter.

"What?"

"Alessandro knows where you are."

My heart stopped.

"How?"

"He has someone watching the police station."

I looked toward the window.

Valentina continued.

"He's planning to recover the documents before investigators can secure everything."

I stood.

"Have you told the police?"

"Not yet."

"Then call them."

"I will."

Her voice broke.

"Please be careful."

***

That night, police arrested two men connected to Alessandro's surveillance operation.

The threats against me became part of a larger investigation.

I was moved temporarily to a secure location.

Dante was informed.

But he did not demand to know where.

Instead, he sent a message through my attorney.

I know you're safe. That's enough for tonight. I'm here if you need me.

I read it twice.

Then smiled sadly.

It was such a small thing.

Respecting a boundary.

Accepting uncertainty.

Trusting me to make decisions.

Yet it was something the man I'd married had struggled to do.

***

Three days later, Alessandro Duca was arrested while attempting to leave the country.

Valentina cooperated with investigators.

The hidden records became central evidence in the case.

And the Moretti family's carefully protected history began unraveling.

Dante lost business partners.

Several executives resigned.

His reputation suffered.

But he continued cooperating.

***

One evening, I received a photograph from Marco.

It showed Dante standing alone in the east wing.

The doors were open.

The old paintings had been removed for examination.

The rooms that had once held secrets were empty.

Beneath the photograph, Marco had written:

He finally opened the doors.

I stared at the image.

Then placed my phone down.

For the first time since leaving the mansion, I wondered whether there might be a way forward.

Not back to the life we'd had.

May you like

But toward something different.
