Chapter 4

CHAPTER 10 — THE AUDITOR’S REVENGE

The strategy was simple: follow the money until it leads to the source.

I compiled a comprehensive dossier.

I included the shell company records, the wire transfers, and the testimony from the employees Sarah had introduced me to.

I didn't go to the local police this time.

I went to the FBI field office in the city.

The agents were skeptical at first, but their demeanor changed when I opened my laptop and projected the flowcharts.

I was no longer just a grandmother.

I was a consultant, a forensic expert, and the most dangerous person in the room.

The investigation was classified, but they kept me informed.

They watched the shadow lender.

They watched his associates.

And finally, they moved.

It was a massive operation, sweeping through offices and high-end penthouses.

I watched it unfold on the news, sitting in my kitchen with a cup of tea.

The face of the man who had pulled the strings appeared on the screen, his head bowed, his reputation in ruins.

The reporter spoke of a 'mastermind' who had finally been unmasked.

I smiled.

They didn't know the mastermind was a seventy-one-year-old woman in a beach house.

And that was exactly as it should be.

I closed my laptop.

The sun was setting over the ocean, painting the sky in shades of bruised purple and gold.

I was tired, but for the first time, I felt truly free.

CHAPTER 11 — THE FRAGMENTS OF FORGIVENESS

The legal proceedings dragged on for months, a slow-motion unraveling of a criminal enterprise.

I became a shadow in the courtroom, watching the slow destruction of the people who had tried to erase me.

Vanessa looked different in her prison garb.

The diamonds were gone.

The silk was replaced by coarse cotton.

She looked at me from the defendant's table, her eyes searching for a crack in my resolve.

She didn't find one.

I did not harbor hatred, but I did not offer mercy.

Mercy was for those who asked for it with honesty.

Vanessa only asked for it with manipulation.

I focused on the restitution fund.

The money I had secured was being distributed to the staff, the contractors, and the other victims of the shadow lender.

It was a drop in the bucket, but it was a beginning.

I received a letter from the bank chairwoman, Cynthia.

She thanked me for my diligence, acknowledging that without my intervention, the bank would have been complicit in a massive fraud.

I put the letter in my safe, next to the original trust documents.

I had saved more than my home.

I had saved the integrity of the life I had built with Thomas.

I stood on my balcony and breathed in the salt air.

May you like

The silver scar on my forehead was nearly invisible now.

A thin, white line that marked the boundary between the woman I was and the woman I had become.
