Chapter 12

The following week was a completely relentless and exhausting blur of activity,
filled entirely with endless strategy meetings and massive stacks of legal paperwork,
as we desperately prepared to defend our ambitious riverbank proposal.
The rival firm,
operating under the highly generic name of Apex Holdings,
launched a surprisingly aggressive and very public smear campaign against my company.
They conveniently leaked heavily manipulated financial documents to the local press,
falsely suggesting that Elise Grace Properties lacked the necessary capital,
and incorrectly claiming that our community-focused plans were financially unsustainable.
It was a classic and entirely predictable bullying tactic,
designed specifically to scare the city council members,
and force them to vote safely for the massive corporate giant instead.
I sat quietly in my brightly lit downtown office,
staring angrily at the wildly inaccurate newspaper headlines scattered across my desk,
feeling a very familiar and deeply buried anger beginning to simmer inside me.
This was exactly how Beatrix and her wealthy friends used to operate,
using their vast resources and massive influence to crush anyone who disagreed with them,
and twisting the absolute truth until it completely served their own selfish purposes.
Sabina walked briskly into my office carrying a thick and heavy file folder,
her jaw set firmly with that signature and unyielding determination I knew so well,
and dropped the heavy documents loudly onto the center of my desk.
She had spent the entire weekend digging deeply into public records,
tracing the incredibly complex and hidden financial webs surrounding Apex Holdings,
and hunting relentlessly for the ultimate source of their arrogant confidence.
She proudly pointed to a single highlighted name buried deeply in the corporate registry,
a wealthy venture capitalist named Richard Sterling,
who was the exact man my attorney had urgently warned me about.
Sterling was a completely ruthless and deeply arrogant man,
someone who had frequently attended the lavish and suffocating dinners Beatrix used to host,
and who had always looked at me with a sickening mixture of pity and extreme disdain.
He clearly viewed my current success as a massive personal insult,
a highly unacceptable deviation from the strict script his elite social circle had written for me,
and he was now using his massive wealth to try and publicly destroy my legacy.
Elias entered the room and looked quietly over the damning documents,
his expression remaining incredibly calm but his eyes narrowing with a sharp and dangerous intensity,
recognizing immediately the massive threat this arrogant man posed to our family.
He gently reminded me that we could not simply fight them using their own dirty tactics,
because rolling in the mud would only tarnish the impeccable reputation we had built,
and completely validate the terrible lies they were desperately trying to spread.
I completely agreed with him,
knowing deeply that my entire business empire was built firmly on absolute transparency,
and that hiding in the dark shadows was a game entirely for cowards.
Instead of immediately issuing an angry and defensive public denial,
I decided boldly to invite the entire city council to our little yellow house,
hosting a completely open and highly transparent presentation in our own backyard.
I wanted them to see exactly who we truly were,
not a faceless and massive corporate entity hiding behind expensive lawyers,
but a real and dedicated family deeply invested in the actual future of our city.
We quickly set up large presentation boards directly under the old maple trees,
arranging comfortable seating on the incredibly green and freshly cut grass,
and serving simple homemade food instead of expensive and catered caviar.
The council members arrived looking incredibly curious and slightly hesitant,
clearly unaccustomed to such a deeply personal and surprisingly intimate approach to municipal business,
but they were quickly disarmed by the genuine and absolute warmth of our home.
Sabina stood confidently at the absolute front of the assembled crowd,
speaking with an incredible passion and a remarkable clarity about her architectural designs,
explaining beautifully how the open green spaces would drastically lower local crime rates,
and how the affordable retail units would effectively stimulate the struggling local economy.
She was absolutely brilliant,
shining with a massive and undeniable inner light,
and completely commanding the full attention of every single person in that busy backyard.
I watched her with a swelling and almost painful sense of overwhelming maternal pride,
realizing clearly that she was effectively taking the heavy torch from my tired hands,
and carrying it bravely forward into a completely new and exciting generation.
When she finally finished her incredibly moving presentation,
the council members asked surprisingly thoughtful and genuinely engaged questions,
their initial and obvious skepticism completely replaced by a growing and very real enthusiasm.
I systematically walked them through our completely transparent financial models,
showing them exactly how our ethical and community-minded approach,
would yield steady and incredibly reliable long-term returns for the entire city.
Just as the highly successful afternoon was finally drawing to a very peaceful close,
a sleek and incredibly expensive black car pulled slowly up to the curb,
and Richard Sterling himself stepped aggressively out onto the quiet residential street.
He walked arrogantly up my driveway completely uninvited,
wearing an incredibly expensive and perfectly tailored grey suit,
and carrying an arrogant smirk that made my stomach churn with sudden and intense disgust.
He loudly interrupted a councilman,
mockingly congratulating us on our quaint and incredibly touching little neighborhood bake sale,
before arrogantly declaring that the city needed massive corporate power,
not overly emotional and highly unrealistic fairy tales designed by amateur women.
The entire backyard went incredibly and awkwardly silent,
the sudden and massive tension hanging thickly and heavily in the warm afternoon air,
as everyone collectively waited to see exactly how I would finally react.
I did not scream,
and I did not aggressively throw him out of my yard,
because I was completely done giving arrogant men exactly what they desperately wanted.
I simply smiled at him with an incredibly cold and absolutely terrifying grace,
and very calmly thanked him for finally showing up completely in person,
because his highly arrogant and incredibly rude behavior,
was exactly the best possible argument for choosing our community-focused firm over his.
The council members actively murmured in incredibly strong and very obvious agreement,
visibly repulsed by Sterling's massive and completely undeniable lack of basic respect,
and entirely won over by my incredibly calm and deeply measured response.
Sterling's arrogant face completely flushed a very dark and highly angry red,
realizing instantly that his aggressive and outdated bullying tactic had backfired completely,
and he quickly turned around and stormed angrily back to his expensive car.
As he aggressively drove away,
I looked proudly around my beautiful and peaceful backyard,
May you like
surrounded entirely by the people I completely loved and highly respected,
and I knew with absolute and total certainty that we had fundamentally won the war.
