Chapter 3 - My Mafia Husband Discovered My Father Had Stolen My Inheritance—But When His Brother Woke Up, He Revealed the One Betrayal Nobody ExpectedMarco Ferrara woke up eleven days after my wedding.

The call came just after midnight.

Nico was in his office when Sal entered.

"Boss."

Nico looked up.

"What?"

Sal's expression changed.

"Marco's awake."

For a moment, Nico didn't move.

Then he stood so quickly that his chair struck the wall.

"What?"

Sal nodded.

"The hospital called. He's conscious."

Nico grabbed his coat.

Then stopped.

His eyes found me standing in the doorway.

I'd been bringing him coffee.

He looked at me.

"Marco's awake."

I smiled.

"That's wonderful."

For a moment, his expression softened.

Then he asked, "Do you want to come?"

I hesitated.

His younger brother had nearly died because of a conspiracy involving my father.

I wasn't sure Marco would want to see me.

Nico noticed.

"You don't have to."

I took a breath.

"I want to."

He nodded.

"Then let's go."

The hospital was quiet when we arrived.

A nurse led us to Marco's room.

He lay propped against pillows, pale and exhausted.

A bandage covered part of his forehead.

His left arm rested in a sling.

But his eyes were open.

When he saw Nico, he smiled weakly.

"About time you showed up."

Nico stopped in the doorway.

For a moment, he looked unable to speak.

Then he crossed the room.

"Idiot."

Marco laughed softly.

"Love you too."

Nico gripped his brother's shoulder.

Carefully.

For a moment, I thought he might cry.

But he simply lowered his head.

Marco looked at him.

"Hey."

Nico swallowed.

"Don't ever do that again."

Marco smiled.

"I'll try."

Then his eyes moved toward me.

He frowned.

"Who's that?"

Nico straightened.

For a moment, he looked uncomfortable.

Then he said, "My wife."

Marco stared.

"What?"

I smiled weakly.

"Hi."

He looked from me to Nico.

Then back again.

"You got married while I was unconscious?"

Nico sighed.

"It's complicated."

Marco laughed.

"Of course it is."

I stepped closer.

"My name is Nora."

Marco smiled.

"Marco."

I nodded.

"I know."

His expression changed.

He studied my face.

Then asked, "Ashford?"

My stomach tightened.

Nico looked at him.

"Yes."

Marco went still.

For a moment, nobody spoke.

Then Marco whispered, "Edmund Ashford's daughter?"

I nodded.

"Yes."

His expression darkened.

Nico stepped closer.

"Marco."

His brother looked at him.

"There's something you need to know."

Nico's jaw tightened.

"What?"

Marco took a breath.

"The accident."

I felt my stomach drop.

He continued.

"It wasn't just Ashford."

Nico nodded.

"We know."

Marco looked surprised.

"What?"

Nico leaned forward.

"We know about Vittorio."

Marco's face changed.

For a moment, he looked frightened.

Then he shook his head.

"No."

Nico frowned.

"What?"

Marco swallowed.

"Vittorio wasn't the only one."

Silence.

I looked at Nico.

His expression became unreadable.

Marco continued.

"Someone else was involved."

Nico leaned closer.

"Who?"

Marco hesitated.

Then whispered a name.

"Sal."

For a moment, nobody moved.

I stared at him.

Sal Greco.

Nico's security chief.

The man who had stood outside our bedroom on our wedding night.

The man who had helped protect the house.

The man Nico trusted more than almost anyone.

Nico's face went white.

"What?"

Marco swallowed.

"Sal."

Nico shook his head.

"No."

Marco's eyes filled.

"I saw him."

Silence.

Nico stared.

Marco continued.

"Before the crash."

His voice shook.

"He was meeting with one of Vittorio's men."

Nico stepped backward.

For a moment, he looked as though the floor had disappeared beneath him.

I reached for his hand.

He looked at me.

Then down at our joined fingers.

For a moment, he seemed surprised.

Then he held on.

Marco continued.

"I confronted him."

Nico looked up.

"And?"

Marco swallowed.

"He told me to leave it alone."

Silence.

I felt cold.

Marco looked at Nico.

"Then someone followed me."

Nico closed his eyes.

For a moment, nobody spoke.

Then he whispered, "Sal."

The name sounded like a wound.

I looked at him.

For the first time, I saw the cost of the life he had built.

Trust was rare.

Betrayal was everywhere.

And the people closest to him could be the most dangerous.

Nico took a breath.

Then looked at Marco.

"Rest."

Marco frowned.

"Nico—"

"I'll handle it."

Marco shook his head.

"Don't do anything stupid."

For a moment, Nico almost smiled.

"That's my line."

Marco laughed weakly.

Then closed his eyes.

We left the room quietly.

In the hallway, Nico stopped.

He leaned against the wall.

For a moment, he looked exhausted.

I stood beside him.

Then whispered, "Are you okay?"

He laughed bitterly.

"No."

I nodded.

For a moment, neither of us spoke.

Then I said something that surprised him.

"You don't have to be okay right now."

He looked at me.

His expression softened.

I continued.

"You almost lost your brother."

He swallowed.

"And now you might lose someone else you trusted."

Nico closed his eyes.

For a moment, he looked younger.

Less dangerous.

More human.

Then he whispered, "I don't know who to trust anymore."

I looked at him.

For a moment, I thought about my father.

The scars.

The years of silence.

The way trust had become something dangerous in my life too.

Then I took a breath.

"Start with the truth."

Nico opened his eyes.

I continued.

"Not the people who tell you what you want to hear."

He stared.

"The people who are willing to tell you what you need to know."

For a moment, neither of us spoke.

Then he nodded.

"You're right."

I smiled faintly.

"I know."

He laughed softly.

For the first time that night, the tension in his face eased.

Then he looked at me.

"Nora."

I looked up.

"Yes?"

"Thank you."

I smiled.

"For what?"

He hesitated.

Then answered.

"For being here."

My throat tightened.

I nodded.

"You're welcome."

The next morning, Nico confronted Sal.

Not with violence.

Not with threats.

But with evidence.

He had reviewed security records, communications, and financial transfers connected to the attack.

Sal initially denied everything.

Then the evidence became impossible to explain.

He admitted that Vittorio had pressured him.

He claimed he hadn't known Marco would be seriously injured.

He insisted he had only been asked to provide information about Marco's movements.

Nico listened.

For a long time, he said nothing.

Then he looked at the man who had worked beside him for twelve years.

"Why?"

Sal's expression crumpled.

"My family."

Nico stared.

Sal continued.

"Vittorio threatened them."

For a moment, Nico looked almost sympathetic.

Then his expression hardened.

"You could have come to me."

Sal looked down.

"I know."

Nico took a breath.

Then said something that surprised everyone.

"You're going to tell the authorities everything."

Sal looked up.

"What?"

Nico nodded.

"Everything."

Sal stared.

Nico continued.

"About Vittorio. About Ashford. About Marco."

For a moment, nobody spoke.

Then Sal lowered his head.

"All right."

The investigation expanded.

Authorities reviewed the evidence.

Financial records.

Communications.

Witness statements.

And eventually, charges were brought against individuals connected to the conspiracy.

My father was arrested.

Vittorio was arrested.

Sal cooperated with investigators.

The Ferrara family empire faced intense scrutiny.

And Nico was forced to make decisions that would change his life forever.

He began separating legitimate businesses from criminal operations.

He hired independent legal counsel.

He cooperated with lawful investigations.

And he accepted that the future he wanted could not be built on the same foundation as the past.

It wasn't easy.

Some associates left.

Some threatened him.

Some tried to pressure him into silence.

But Nico continued.

And I watched.

Not because I believed he was perfect.

He wasn't.

Not because I had forgotten our wedding night.

I hadn't.

But because I was beginning to see a man who understood that power without responsibility could destroy everything he loved.

One evening, I found him standing beside the library window.

He looked tired.

I approached quietly.

"Nico."

He turned.

"Hey."

I smiled.

"Long day?"

He laughed softly.

"You could say that."

I stood beside him.

For a moment, we watched the city lights.

Then he looked at me.

"Nora."

I looked up.

"Yes?"

"I've been thinking about our marriage."

My stomach tightened.

He noticed.

Then smiled faintly.

"Not like that."

I laughed weakly.

He continued.

"We didn't choose this."

I nodded.

"No."

He looked down.

"And I don't want you to feel trapped."

My throat tightened.

He continued.

"Evelyn can help you arrange an annulment or divorce if that's what you want."

I stared.

For a moment, I couldn't speak.

Then whispered, "You'd let me go?"

His expression softened.

"Nora."

He took a breath.

"I should never have taken away your choice in the first place."

Tears filled my eyes.

He continued.

"I won't do it again."

For a moment, neither of us spoke.

Then I looked toward the city.

I thought about my father.

The scars.

The wedding.

The fear.

The months since.

And the man standing beside me.

The man who had apologized.

Who had listened.

Who had given me space.

Who was trying to change.

I took a breath.

"I don't know what I want yet."

Nico nodded.

"That's okay."

I looked up.

He smiled faintly.

May you like

"You don't have to decide tonight."

For the first time in my life, I believed someone meant it.
