Chapter 9

The descent was a grueling,

claustrophobic nightmare of bruised knees and scraping metal.

The maintenance ladder was steep and narrow,

forcing us to move slowly and deliberately in the pitch-black shaft.

The beam of my flashlight cut a narrow path through the dust,

illuminating the endless vertical drop beneath us.

"My arms are burning,"

Harper whispered fiercely,

her breath echoing loudly in the confined space.

"Don't look down,"

I advised,

my own muscles screaming in protest with every rung we descended.

We had passed the thirtieth floor,

then the twentieth,

slipping silently past the chaotic search happening in the corridors outside the duct.

Suddenly,

the sound of heavy combat boots echoed clearly through the thin metal walls.

We froze,

clinging tightly to the ladder,

holding our breath as the mercenaries swept the hallway on the fifteenth floor.

"Clear,"

a harsh,

gravelly voice reported over a radio.

"They aren't in the executive suite,

the servers are completely wiped."

"Find them,"

another voice commanded,

laced with furious urgency.

"They couldn't have evaporated,

tear the building apart if you have to."

The footsteps moved away,

fading back into the eerie silence of the darkened skyscraper.

We resumed our descent,

moving with agonizing caution,

every metallic creak sounding like a gunshot in our ears.

By the time we reached the subterranean garage,

my hands were raw and bleeding,

and my clothes were soaked in sweat.

I kicked out the lower ventilation grate,

tumbling out onto the cold concrete floor of the basement.

Harper landed heavily beside me,

letting out a sharp gasp of pain as she hit the ground.

"Are you okay,"

I asked,

helping her up in the dim light of the emergency exit signs.

"Twisted ankle,"

she grimaced,

putting her weight carefully on her good leg.

"I can walk,

but I can't run."

We moved toward the secure,

armored SUV parked in my reserved VIP spot.

I unlocked the vehicle using a manual key override,

shoving Harper into the passenger seat before diving behind the steering wheel.

The engine roared to life,

a powerful,

comforting sound in the vast,

empty garage.

But as I slammed the car into drive,

a pair of blinding headlights suddenly illuminated the exit ramp.

A heavy tactical truck blocked the only way out,

and two men stepped out from behind the glare,

raising their weapons toward our windshield.

They had anticipated our escape route,

setting a final trap at the bottom of the labyrinth.

"Hold on,"

I yelled,

gripping the steering wheel tightly.

I didn't hit the brakes,

I hit the accelerator,

pushing the armored SUV to its maximum limit.

May you like

The vehicle surged forward,

a massive kinetic weapon aimed directly at the blockade.
