Chapter 11: The Scientific Turn

Dr. Anderson didn't flinch or back down for a single second. She slowly stood up from her rolling stool, drawing herself up to her full height. The warm, sympathetic doctor vanished, replaced instantly by a formidable medical professional whose authority in this clinical room was absolute and non-negotiable. She folded her arms tightly over her white lab coat, staring at Daniel and Vanessa with an expression of icy, professional disapproval that could have cut through glass.

"Sir, this is a private, confidential medical examination room," Dr. Anderson said, her voice dropping to a dangerous, highly authoritative register that commanded immediate attention. "You cannot simply burst in here without patient authorization. I must ask you and your companion to leave this room immediately, or I will have hospital security remove you."

"I am her legal husband," Daniel snapped back, his arrogance completely unyielding as he pointed an aggressive finger at me on the table. "And until the final divorce papers are signed and legalized, I have every single legal right to be informed about medical developments—especially when those developments involve a fraudulent attempt to claim child support for a pregnancy that biologically cannot be mine."

Vanessa stepped forward from behind his shoulder, her voice sweet, highly artificial, and dripping with a false concern that was sickening to witness. "Doctor, please understand the context. Daniel has suffered an immense amount of emotional distress due to his wife's blatant infidelity. We are simply here today to get the objective, medical timeline so we can proceed with the legal separation cleanly. There's absolutely no need for you to protect her secrets anymore."

I sat up on the padded table, clutching the paper sheet tightly to my chest, my face burning with a volatile mixture of intense anger and profound humiliation. "Daniel, get out of this room right now! You have absolutely no right to be here! You chose Vanessa, you chose to walk away from our home—get out of my medical appointment!"

"Not until I see that screen with my own eyes, Lauren," Daniel sneered, taking an aggressive step closer to the ultrasound machine. "Let’s see the measurements. Let’s see the date of conception. Show me the undeniable proof that you’ve been lying to this entire community."

Dr. Anderson looked at Daniel for a long moment. Then her gaze shifted to Vanessa, carefully observing the way the woman stood possessively close to my husband. Finally, she looked back at the ultrasound monitor, where the tiny heartbeat continued to flicker steadily, entirely oblivious to the human malice filling the space. A sudden, profound change came over Dr. Anderson’s face. The professional anger disappeared, replaced by a calm, calculated stillness. She looked at Daniel, a small, unreadable expression playing at the corner of her lips.

"Mr. Mitchell," Dr. Anderson said, her voice exceptionally quiet and steady, carrying an weight that made the room grow still. "Before you utter another single word of accusation against your wife, I think you need to see something."

She reached out and turned the large ultrasound monitor on its pivoting arm, swinging the glowing screen around so it faced Daniel and Vanessa directly under the lights.

"I suggest you step forward, open your eyes, and take a very close, meticulous look at what we are actually seeing on this screen before you make a fool of yourself in a court of law."
