Chapter 1

CHAPTER 1 — The Echoes of the Past
The morning sun filtered through the sheer curtains of my kitchen.
It cast a warm, golden glow across the marble countertops.
Sixteen months had passed since the gavel fell, finalizing my divorce and Tucker’s prison sentence.
I sat at the island, wrapping my hands around a steaming mug of Earl Grey tea.
I took a slow sip, letting the quiet peace of the house wash over me.
There was no yelling, no subtle insults, no walking on eggshells.
Just absolute, undeniable silence.
I reached up and gently touched the faint, jagged scar on my cheek.
The physical reminder of the scalding coffee Tucker had thrown at me.
At first, I had tried to hide it with heavy makeup and perfectly styled hair.
Now, I wore it like a badge of honor, a testament to what I had survived.
My phone buzzed on the counter, pulling me from my thoughts.
It was a text from Rachel Baldwin, my attorney and now one of my closest friends.
“Meeting at 10 AM. The Phoenix Fund numbers are in, and you’re going to love them.”
I smiled, typing back a quick confirmation before heading upstairs to get dressed.
The Phoenix Fund was my proudest achievement, built directly from the ashes of Tucker’s ruined empire.
When I forced his company into receivership, I didn’t just strip him of his wealth.
I repurposed it, creating a massive legal and financial resource for victims of domestic abuse.
We provided emergency housing, top-tier legal representation, and financial untangling services.
Walking into the glass-walled boardroom of my family’s lending firm an hour later, I felt an undeniable surge of power.
Rachel was already there, spreading out thick financial dossiers across the mahogany table.
She looked up, her sharp eyes gleaming with satisfaction.
“You look like someone who is ready to conquer the world,” Rachel noted, gesturing for me to sit.
“Just my corner of it,” I replied, taking the seat at the head of the table.
“Well, your corner is expanding rapidly. The Phoenix Fund just secured its fiftieth victory in court.”
I let out a breath I didn’t realize I was holding. Fifty lives changed. Fifty women freed.
But Rachel’s smile faltered slightly as she slid a separate, thinner red folder toward me.
“However, there is a minor complication we need to discuss.”
I opened the folder, my eyes scanning the heavily redacted documents inside.
“What is this, Rachel?”
“During the final liquidation of Tucker’s remaining shell companies, an anomaly popped up.”
She leaned forward, pointing to a highlighted string of wire transfers.
“Tucker wasn’t just funneling money to Melanie’s doomed beauty studio.”
“He was quietly moving large sums offshore, into an account we missed during the initial audit.”
My blood ran cold.
“How much?” I asked, my voice dangerously quiet.
“About three million dollars. And someone is actively trying to pull it out right now.”
Tucker was sitting in a minimum-security cell, supposedly stripped of every asset he ever owned.
If he had a hidden war chest, it meant he was still playing a game I thought I had already won.
“Freeze it,” I ordered, slapping the folder shut.
“Trace the routing numbers. Find out who is on the other end of those transfers.”
Rachel nodded. “I’ve already got my best forensic accountants on it.”
“Tucker thinks he can hide from me?” I stood up, walking toward the floor-to-ceiling windows.
“He forgot who controls the board.”
I looked out over the city skyline, my resolve hardening into steel.

The war wasn’t over. But this time, I wasn’t a victim waking up to an ambush.
I was the apex predator, and I was going to hunt him down to the last penny.
