Chapter 5

CHAPTER 8 — A HORIZON WITHOUT LIMITS
The final piece of the puzzle fell into place on a rainy Tuesday.
I received a package at my office, delivered without a return address.
Inside was a collection of old photographs I had forgotten existed.
They were pictures of the condo before I had finished paying it off.
Before the renovations.
Before the long, exhausting hours of overtime that had bought me my freedom.
Seeing them, I was struck by how much I had changed.
I wasn't the girl who needed validation from a husband or his family anymore.
I was a woman who knew the exact value of her own signature.
I walked to the floor-to-ceiling window of my office and looked out at the rain-streaked glass.
The city looked like a circuit board, vibrant and interconnected.
I knew that somewhere out there, another woman was being told she was "too emotional."
Somewhere else, another wife was being pressured to give up her hard-won security.
I had the tools to help.
I had the experience to guide.
And most importantly, I had the resilience to stand firm.
The scar on my temple had completely faded.
It was a part of my story, but it no longer defined my narrative.
I turned back to my desk, picked up my pen, and began drafting a new proposal for a legislative change.
I was going to push for better legal protections for assets acquired during a marriage.
It was a big goal, a difficult road, but I wasn't afraid.
I had faced the crash of a plate against my skull, and I had emerged stronger.
The horizon ahead of me was wide open, vast, and waiting.
May you like
There were no limits anymore.
Only the work I chose to do, and the life I chose to live.
