Chapter 4

Julian, dressed in standard orange inmate garb with his hands cuffed to a waist chain, refused to look in my direction during the opening statements. He sat flanked by two state-appointed public defenders—his high-priced corporate legal team having abandoned him the moment his assets were seized and his retainer checks bounced. Across the aisle, Selena Cole sat at a separate defense table, looking haggard, hollow-eyed, and utterly defeated. She had entered into a cooperative plea agreement with the District Attorney's office in exchange for a reduced sentence of fifteen years, agreeing to testify truthfully about every detail of the conspiracy.

The prosecution's case was an airtight masterpiece of forensic science, digital tracking, and unyielding testimony. Detective Ruiz took the stand first, detailing the 911 dispatch logs, the seventeen-minute delay before emergency services were notified, and the forensic recovery of the smartwatch audio file. When the courtroom speakers played those chilling forty-eight minutes of audio—Julian's panicked confession, Selena's cold calculation, and their mutual rehearsal of the cover-up—several jurors visibly flinched. The audio was undeniable, incontrovertible proof of premeditated malice.

Next, Dr. Caleb Reed took the stand, walking the jury through the severity of my injuries, the massive blood transfusions required to save my life, and the miraculous survival of the twin embryos despite massive physical trauma. When Dr. Reed displayed the hospital ultrasound imagery on the courtroom's large overhead monitors—showing two healthy, active fetals kicking and growing strong—a collective gasp rippled through the gallery. Several jurors glared across the room at Julian with undisguised disgust.

But the definitive turning point of the trial arrived when Selena Cole took the witness stand.

Called as the prosecution's star witness, Selena avoided eye contact with Julian entirely as she adjusted her microphone. Under direct examination by the lead prosecutor, she methodically dismantled every single lie Julian's defense team had attempted to construct. She testified about how Julian had approached her months earlier, complaining that a messy divorce would ruin his corporate reputation and cost him control of his startup. She detailed how they had brainstormed the fake attack, how she had self-inflicted the superficial scratch on her arm with a paperclip in the hallway, and how Julian had practiced driving the kitchen knife into a foam dummy in their basement garage two nights before executing the plan.

"He wanted her dead," Selena testified, her voice cracking slightly under the weight of her own perjury and betrayal. "He told me it was the only clean way out. He said once the insurance payout cleared, we would move to Europe and start over."

Julian’s lead public defender stood up for cross-examination, aggressive and desperate, trying to paint Selena as a manipulative sociopath who had coerced a weak, emotionally vulnerable CEO into a momentary lapse of judgment. "Isn't it true, Ms. Cole, that you orchestrated this entire plot independently and coerced Mr. Vance into participating under threats of public exposure?"

Selena snapped, her fragile victim mask shattering completely into bitter resentment. "Coerced him? Are you kidding me?!" she shouted, turning her fury toward the defense table where Julian sat staring at his lap. "Julian didn't need any coercion! He hated her! He hated that she owned half his company, he hated that she was smarter than him, and he wanted her money more than he wanted his own unborn children! He was the one who bought the life insurance policy! He was the one who picked the exact night when the estate security guard was off duty! Don't you dare sit there and pretend he was an innocent victim!"

The courtroom erupted into murmurs, requiring the judge to bang his gavel repeatedly to restore order. Julian buried his face in his cuffed hands, his shoulders shaking as the final pillars of his carefully curated life crumbled into dust before national television cameras.

When my turn came to take the witness stand, I walked up slowly, resting a protective hand over my swollen belly. I didn't yell, I didn't cry, and I didn't look at Julian with hatred. I looked at him with profound, pitying indifference. I recounted the terror of that afternoon, the betrayal of feeling the blade pierce my flesh, and the heartbreaking realization that the man I loved had stepped over my dying body to protect another woman.

"My husband thought he had successfully erased me," I told the jury, my voice ringing clear and resonant across the quiet courtroom. "He thought he could silence my voice, steal my children's future, and walk away scot-free behind a shield of corporate lies and fabricated scratches. But truth has a stubborn way of surviving, even at the bottom of a blade. I survived. My children survived. And today, justice will speak for all of us."
