Chapter 2 - The Mafia Boss Humiliated His Pregnant Wife at the Gala—But the Rival Family’s Secret Message Revealed Why Her Wedding Dress Had Become the Most Dangerous Object in ChicagoClara stood beneath the hotel awning.

Sleet struck the pavement.
The city glittered beyond the street.
Dante Castiglione watched her from the back seat of his car.
For a moment, neither spoke.
Then Clara asked, "What did you find?"
Dante smiled.
"Something your husband has been hiding."
Clara's heart pounded.
She looked toward the hotel entrance.
Security guards stood beside the doors.
Guests laughed inside.
Music drifted through the glass.
Everything looked normal.
But nothing felt normal anymore.
Dante opened the car door.
"Come inside."
Clara stepped backward.
"No."
He laughed softly.
"Smart woman."
She stared.
He continued.
"Your husband has taught you well."
Clara swallowed.
"What do you want?"
Dante looked toward her stomach.
His smile faded slightly.
"To make sure the next generation understands the price of loyalty."
Clara felt cold.
She took another step backward.
Dante sighed.
"Very well."
He reached into his coat.
Then held out a small envelope.
Clara stared.
"What is that?"
"Proof."
She hesitated.
Then took it.
Dante smiled.
"Ask Silas why your dress was altered."
The window rose.
The car pulled away.
Clara stood motionless.
Then she opened the envelope.
Inside was a photograph.
Her pale blue gown.
The lining had been cut open.
A small black device rested beneath the fabric.
Clara stared.
A listening device.
Hidden inside her dress.
Her stomach dropped.
She returned to the hotel.
Not to the ballroom.
To a private lounge.
She called Matteo.
He answered immediately.
"Clara?"
Her voice trembled.
"Where are you?"
"At the gala."
"Come to the east lounge."
He hesitated.
"What's wrong?"
Clara looked at the photograph.
"Everything."
Matteo arrived five minutes later.
His expression changed when he saw her.
"Clara."
She held out the photograph.
He stared.
For a moment, he didn't speak.
Then whispered, "Where did you get this?"
Clara swallowed.
"Dante."
Matteo closed his eyes.
She stared.
"You knew."
He looked up.
"Clara."
"You knew."
His jaw tightened.
"I knew there was a device."
Clara felt sick.
"Inside my dress?"
Matteo nodded.
She stepped backward.
"Why?"
He looked toward the door.
Then whispered, "Because someone wanted to hear what you said to Silas."
Clara stared.
"What?"
Matteo continued.
"The Castigliones planted it."
Her heart pounded.
"Then why did Silas give the dress to Elena?"
Matteo hesitated.
"Because he wanted them to believe he hadn't discovered it."
Clara felt cold.
For a moment, she couldn't speak.
Then whispered, "He used me."
Matteo looked down.
"Yes."
The honesty hurt more than a lie.
Clara closed her eyes.
Her husband had chosen strategy over trust.
Again.
Inside the ballroom, Silas stood beside Elena.
He looked calm.
Controlled.
Untouchable.
But when he saw Clara enter, his expression changed.
She approached.
Elena smiled.
"Clara."
Clara ignored her.
She looked at Silas.
"Can we speak?"
Silas nodded.
"Of course."
Elena tightened her grip on his arm.
"Now?"
Clara looked at her.
"Yes."
Silas gently removed Elena's hand.
Then followed Clara into a private corridor.
For a moment, neither spoke.
Then Clara held out the photograph.
Silas went still.
She watched his face.
"How long?"
He swallowed.
"Three days."
Clara stared.
"Three days."
He nodded.
She laughed bitterly.
"You knew my dress had been tampered with."
"Yes."
"And you didn't tell me."
Silas looked down.
"No."
Clara felt tears rise.
"Why?"
He stepped closer.
"Because I needed them to believe I was cooperating."
She shook her head.
"So you gave Elena my dress."
Silas closed his eyes.
"Yes."
Clara stared.
For a moment, she couldn't speak.
Then whispered, "You humiliated me."
His expression changed.
"I know."
She swallowed.
"In front of everyone."
He nodded.
"I'm sorry."
Clara laughed through tears.
"Sorry?"
Silas reached for her hand.
She stepped backward.
He stopped.
Clara looked at him.
"You promised our son would have a different life."
His eyes filled.
She continued.
"But you're already teaching him that love means being sacrificed for power."
Silas looked devastated.
"Clara."
She shook her head.
"I can't do this."
Then she turned.
And walked away.
That night, Clara moved into a small apartment owned by her friend, Dr. Amelia Hart.
Amelia was an obstetrician.
She had known Clara since college.
When Clara arrived, Amelia took one look at her face and opened her arms.
Clara began crying.
For a long time, neither spoke.
Then Amelia whispered, "What happened?"
Clara shook her head.
"My husband gave my dress to another woman."
Amelia stared.
"What?"
Clara laughed bitterly.
"Apparently, it was part of a strategy."
Amelia's expression hardened.
"Of course it was."
Clara sat.
She told Amelia everything.
The treaty.
The marriage contract.
The hidden device.
The gala.
The humiliation.
Amelia listened.
Then took Clara's hand.
"You don't have to go back."
Clara looked up.
"I know."
Amelia smiled gently.
"And you don't have to decide everything tonight."
Clara began crying again.
Meanwhile, Silas returned to the estate.
The residence felt empty.
Clara's shoes were gone.
Her coat.
Her favorite books.
The small framed ultrasound photograph beside the bed.
He stood in the bedroom.
For a long time, he couldn't move.
Then Matteo entered.
"Boss."
Silas turned.
"Where is she?"
Matteo hesitated.
"Safe."
Silas stared.
"With whom?"
Matteo looked down.
"She asked me not to tell you."
Silas closed his eyes.
For a moment, anger rose.
Then he remembered Clara's face.
The tears.
The humiliation.
The way she stepped backward when he reached for her.
He took a slow breath.
"Then don't."
Matteo looked surprised.
Silas continued.
"Just make sure she's protected."
Matteo nodded.
"Of course."
The next morning, Silas received a message.
Unknown number.
A photograph appeared.
Clara.
Leaving the hotel.
Beneath it, a sentence.
SHE WALKED AWAY. NOW SHE BELONGS TO THE TREATY.
Silas felt cold.
He called Matteo.
Then Gabriel Russo, his security director.
Then Detective Mara Ellis.
For the first time, Silas understood that his silence had not protected Clara.
It had made her vulnerable.
The investigation uncovered something worse.
The listening device inside Clara's dress was only one part of a larger operation.
The Castigliones had placed surveillance equipment in several Vance properties.
They had intercepted communications.
Tracked shipments.
And identified disloyal captains.
But the most disturbing discovery involved Clara's pregnancy.
A medical record had been accessed without authorization.
Someone had obtained her due date.
Her doctor's name.
And information about the baby's health.
Silas stared at the report.
His hands trembled.
"Who?"
Gabriel hesitated.
"We're still tracing it."
Silas looked toward the window.
Then whispered, "Find them."
Clara learned about the breach two days later.
Detective Ellis visited Amelia's apartment.
She explained that someone had attempted to access Clara's medical information.
Clara felt sick.
She rested one hand against her stomach.
"Why?"
Ellis hesitated.
"Because someone believes your child gives them leverage."
Clara stared.
For a moment, she couldn't breathe.
Then whispered, "Against Silas."
Ellis nodded.
Clara looked down.
Her son moved.
She closed her eyes.
For the first time, she understood the full danger of the treaty.
It wasn't only about Silas marrying Elena.
It was about control.
Of the docks.
Of the family.
And of her unborn child.
That evening, Clara received a letter.
No return address.
Inside was a copy of the treaty.
But one paragraph had been highlighted.
In the event of the dissolution of the Vance marriage, the unborn heir would remain under the supervision of trustees appointed by the Castiglione family until reaching adulthood.
Clara stared.
Her blood turned cold.
They didn't merely want her to leave.
They wanted her son.
She called Silas.
He answered immediately.
"Clara?"
Her voice trembled.
"Did you know?"
Silence.
Then he asked, "Know what?"
She read the paragraph aloud.
For a moment, there was no sound.
Then Silas whispered, "No."
Clara closed her eyes.
He continued.
"Clara, listen to me."
She swallowed.
"I'm listening."
His voice hardened.
"They're not taking our son."
May you like
Clara looked down at the treaty.
Then whispered, "Then stop playing their game."
