Chapter 4 - The Chessboard of the UnderworldMarcus’s boots crunched loudly against the gravel pathway as he stepped away from the annex door, his eyes scanning the dark perimeter hedges.

“I know someone is out there,” Marcus shouted, pulling a heavy black pistol from his holster. “Step out into the light, or I start shooting into the brush!”
Beside me in the shadows, Matteo didn't panic. With the cold, calculated precision of a veteran operative, he drew his own silenced pistol from his shoulder rig.
“Stay behind me,” Matteo whispered, shifting his weight.
Before Marcus could take another step toward our hiding spot, the deep, rumbling roar of a convoy of heavy engines echoed through the quiet forest outside the estate gates. Headlights cut through the sleet, painting blinding white beams across the stone walls of the mansion.
Marcus froze, lowering his gun slightly as his radio crackled to life.
“Marcus! Marcus, respond!” a panicked voice shouted through the encrypted channel. “We’ve got a massive breach at the main gates! Black armored SUVs—they’re ramming the security grid!”
Marcus cursed loudly. “Who is it? Rival families?”
“No!” the voice yelled over the static. “It’s Calvin! He’s here! He bypassed the outer perimeter alone and he’s tearing through the courtyard!”
My breath hitched. Calvin. He had tracked me here.
Marcus turned on his heel and sprinted back toward the main mansion, abandoning his search of the hedges.
“Now,” Matteo muttered, grabbing my arm. “While the guards are distracted, we need to get inside the annex. Daniel is expecting us.”
“Expecting us?” I asked, stumbling behind Matteo as he forced open the side window of the medical room with a small multitool.
“I sent him a message the moment we left Chicago,” Matteo admitted, boosting me through the window frame. “We’re playing a very dangerous game, Brooke. If Calvin finds you here with his brother, he won't hesitate to eliminate both of us.”
I landed softly on the sterile floor of the medical suite. Daniel sat in his wheelchair near the desk, watching us enter with a calm, almost amused expression, as if he had been sitting in his living room waiting for guests to arrive for tea.
“Well, well,” Daniel rasped, rolling his wheelchair closer. “Little sister-in-law. I must admit, I didn't expect you to figure out the ledger so quickly. Calvin always bragged that you only looked at the charity donations.”
I stood up, wiping mud from my trench coat, glaring down at the man who claimed my husband had tried to murder him.
“Save the commentary, Daniel,” I snapped, my voice laced with sharp defiance. “Your brother is outside right now, destroying this entire property to drag me back to Chicago. If we don't figure out a way to stop him, none of us are walking out of here alive.”
Daniel smiled, though it didn't reach his cold, calculating eyes.
“Calvin thinks he’s the smartest monster in the room,” Daniel said softly, tapping a finger against the tablet on his lap. “He thinks because he holds the physical power, he controls the empire. But power isn't about guns and enforcers, Brooke. Power is about leverage.”
He spun the tablet around, displaying a complex web of encrypted files, video recordings, and legal confessions.
“What is this?” I asked, stepping closer.
“Insurance,” Daniel replied. “For the last three years, while Calvin thought I was a helpless invalid tucked away in this mansion, I’ve been quietly rebuilding my network within the Moretti syndicate. Half of Calvin’s captains are loyal to me, not him. They remember what happened seven years ago. They know he’s a usurper.”
Daniel looked up at me, his gaze locking onto mine with chilling intensity.
“And you, Brooke? You have the one thing Calvin never expected you to have.”
“What's that?”
“A legitimate legal claim to every single corporate asset, holding company, and bank account registered under the Moretti name,” Daniel said smoothly. “Because when Calvin married you nine years ago, he put fifty percent of the primary holding company in your name to protect it from federal seizures. He thought you were just a loyal, obedient wife who would never check the fine print.”
I stared at him in shock. All those legal documents I had signed over the years... I wasn't just managing his paperwork. I was his primary legal partner.
“If you sign these papers,” Daniel continued, sliding a digital signature pad across the desk, “you instantly freeze Calvin’s access to every corporate account, shell company, and syndicate fund in the city. He won't just be an angry husband; he’ll be a king without a kingdom.”

Before I could reach for the stylus, the heavy oak door of the medical room burst open with a deafening crash.
The glass shattered inward as a heavy blow split the frame, and standing in the doorway, soaked in rain, chest heaving, and eyes burning with murderous fury, was Calvin.
