Chapter 3 - MY MAFIA HUSBAND THOUGHT HIS ENEMIES WERE THREATENING OUR UNBORN BABY—BUT THE WOMAN WHO SENT THE PHOTOGRAPH WAS HIDING A SECRET THAT COULD DESTROY HIS EMPIRE

The first time Dante told me someone might be watching me, I thought he was trying to frighten me into returning home.

We were sitting in Eleanor's office.

He had requested an urgent meeting.

I agreed only after Eleanor confirmed that the concern appeared genuine.

Dante placed his phone on the table.

I looked at the photograph.

It showed me outside the doctor's office.

My hand rested against my stomach.

A black sedan stood in the background.

I felt cold.

"When was this taken?"

"Monday."

I stared.

"Someone followed me?"

Dante nodded.

"Possibly."

I looked at him.

"Who?"

"I don't know yet."

Eleanor leaned forward.

"Have you contacted the police?"

Dante hesitated.

I watched him.

"That's the first thing you should have done."

His jaw tightened.

"I wanted to understand the threat."

I shook my head.

"That's the problem, Dante."

He looked at me.

"You still think everything is yours to handle."

Silence.

Then he nodded.

"You're right."

I stared.

The admission surprised me.

Dante continued.

"I'll report it."

***

The next morning, a detective named Mara Ellis interviewed me.

She was direct.

Professional.

Unimpressed by Dante's reputation.

I liked her immediately.

She examined the photograph.

Then asked about my movements.

My appointments.

The people who knew where I was staying.

I answered carefully.

When she asked whether I believed Dante might be involved, I hesitated.

Dante sat beside Eleanor.

He didn't interrupt.

Finally, I said:

"I don't know."

The words hurt.

But they were honest.

Mara nodded.

"That's fine."

She continued.

"We'll follow the evidence."

***

Dante began reviewing his father's old business records.

His father, Vittorio Caruso, had died seven years earlier.

Officially, Vittorio had been a real-estate investor.

Unofficially, he had controlled an organization built on intimidation, corruption, and violence.

Dante inherited the empire at thirty-two.

He told himself he would modernize it.

He would replace old methods with legitimate businesses.

He would make the family respectable.

But power had its own gravity.

And every compromise had led to another.

Now an unknown person was invoking a debt from Vittorio's past.

Dante knew what that could mean.

***

Nico arrived at Dante's office carrying a folder.

"I found something."

Dante looked up.

"What?"

"Your father had a dispute with the Bellini family."

Dante frowned.

"That's old history."

"Not entirely."

Nico opened the folder.

"Vittorio took control of a waterfront property through a shell company."

Dante stared.

"Which property?"

"Pier Seventeen."

Dante went still.

Pier Seventeen was one of the most valuable assets in Caruso Atlantic Holdings.

A massive waterfront development.

Luxury apartments.

Retail space.

Restaurants.

Millions in projected revenue.

Nico continued.

"The original owners claimed the sale was coerced."

Dante looked at the documents.

"Who?"

Nico hesitated.

"Isabella Bellini."

Dante frowned.

"The daughter?"

"Yes."

He remembered her.

A young woman who had disappeared from New York after her father's death.

Dante looked at the photograph on his phone.

Elena.

The baby.

The threat.

Then he looked at Nico.

"Find Isabella."

***

Meanwhile, I tried to continue living normally.

Julia insisted I leave the apartment.

We went to a bookstore.

Then a small café.

For a few hours, I almost forgot about the photograph.

Almost.

At the café, Julia looked at me.

"Do you still love him?"

I stared into my tea.

"Yes."

She nodded.

"That doesn't mean you have to go back."

"I know."

I looked toward the window.

"That's what makes it hard."

Julia reached across the table.

"Love isn't the same as trust."

I swallowed.

"No."

"And trust takes time."

I nodded.

***

That afternoon, I received a message from an unknown number.

You deserve to know what your husband inherited.

Attached was a photograph.

A young woman stood beside an older man in front of a warehouse.

On the back of the image, someone had written:

Pier Seventeen, 2014.

I stared.

Then forwarded everything to Mara.

***

Two days later, Mara called.

"We identified the sender."

My heart pounded.

"Who?"

"Isabella Bellini."

I sat down.

"Who is she?"

Mara paused.

"Her family lost property in a disputed transaction involving Vittorio Caruso."

I closed my eyes.

"Why contact me?"

"She may believe you're a way to pressure Dante."

I felt cold.

"Is she dangerous?"

"We're assessing that."

Mara continued.

"Don't respond to her messages."

I nodded.

***

That evening, Dante called.

I answered.

"Elena."

His voice was tired.

"Are you safe?"

"Yes."

He exhaled.

"Good."

I hesitated.

"Mara told me about Isabella."

Silence.

Then Dante said:

"I'm sorry."

I closed my eyes.

"For what?"

"For the fact that my father's choices are reaching into your life."

I looked toward the window.

"Dante, I need you to answer something."

"Anything."

"Did your father steal that property?"

He was silent.

For several seconds, I heard only his breathing.

Then he said:

"I think he did."

My stomach tightened.

"Then what are you going to do?"

Dante paused.

"Find out exactly what happened."

"And then?"

His voice was quiet.

"Make it right."

***

Dante arranged a meeting with Isabella through attorneys.

The meeting took place in a neutral office.

Nico attended.

So did Isabella's lawyer.

Isabella was thirty-five.

Dark-haired.

Elegant.

Her expression was controlled, but her hands trembled slightly when she opened her folder.

"My father built a shipping business," she said.

Dante listened.

"He refused to cooperate with Vittorio."

She placed documents on the table.

"Then contracts disappeared."

Dante looked down.

"Loans were called."

She continued.

"Inspectors arrived every week."

Her voice hardened.

"Eventually, he was forced to sell."

Dante studied the documents.

The price was far below market value.

Isabella looked at him.

"Your father destroyed mine."

Dante said nothing.

She continued.

"And you built your empire on what he took."

The words landed heavily.

Nico looked toward Dante.

Dante finally spoke.

"I didn't know the full history."

Isabella laughed bitterly.

"That's convenient."

He nodded.

"Yes."

She stared.

Dante continued.

"But ignorance doesn't change what happened."

Silence.

He looked at the documents.

"Have your attorney send mine everything."

Isabella narrowed her eyes.

"Why?"

"Because if the property was taken through coercion, we need to discuss restitution."

She stared.

For the first time, her expression changed.

Not forgiveness.

Surprise.

***

The meeting ended without threats.

But the danger did not.

That night, Dante received another message.

You think money fixes blood?

He stared.

Then a second message arrived.

Ask Nico what happened the night Bellini died.

Dante went still.

He looked toward the door.

Nico was standing there.

Dante slowly raised the phone.

"What does this mean?"

Nico read the message.

His face changed.

Dante stared.

"Nico."

Silence.

"What happened that night?"

Nico looked away.

For the first time in twenty years, Dante saw fear in his closest friend's eyes.

***

Nico had been twenty-six when Vittorio Caruso ordered him to accompany a group of men to a warehouse near Pier Seventeen.

He had been told they were collecting documents.

He later learned the meeting involved Isabella's father.

Nico described an argument.

Threats.

A struggle.

Then a gunshot.

Dante listened without moving.

"Who fired?"

Nico swallowed.

"I don't know."

Dante stared.

"You were there."

"I was outside."

"Why didn't you tell me?"

Nico looked down.

"Your father told me to keep quiet."

Dante felt something inside him collapse.

For years, he had trusted Nico with his life.

Now he was learning that Nico had hidden information about a death connected to one of the family's most valuable assets.

Dante stood.

"Did you help cover it up?"

Nico's eyes filled.

"Yes."

Silence.

Dante looked away.

He wanted to shout.

To break something.

To punish someone.

Instead, he sat down.

For the first time, he understood that the empire he had inherited was not simply a collection of businesses.

It was a collection of secrets.

And those secrets were now threatening his wife and unborn child.

***

The next morning, Dante contacted an independent attorney.

He arranged for records to be preserved.

Then he met with investigators.

He did not ask for immunity.

He did not demand special treatment.

He provided the documents he had found.

And he told them what Nico had disclosed.

The decision would change his life.

Possibly destroy his position.

But for the first time, Dante was choosing truth over power.

***

I learned about the meeting from Mara.

She called me that afternoon.

"Dante has provided information."

I sat down.

"About Isabella's father?"

"Yes."

I closed my eyes.

Mara continued.

"There's an active investigation. I can't discuss details."

I nodded.

"Did he cooperate voluntarily?"

"Yes."

For a long moment, I said nothing.

Then I looked toward the window.

Dante had spent years telling me that the family came first.

Now he was risking the family empire to expose what it had done.

I didn't know whether that meant he had changed.

But it was the first decision I had seen him make that cost him something real.

***

That evening, Dante called.

I answered.

"Elena."

His voice was quiet.

"Hi."

Silence.

Then he said:

"I may lose the company."

I closed my eyes.

"I heard."

He swallowed.

"I may lose more than that."

I looked toward the window.

"Dante."

"Yes?"

"Are you telling me because you want me to come home?"

Silence.

Then he said:

"No."

I breathed.

He continued.

"I'm telling you because you deserve the truth."

My eyes filled.

For years, I had begged him to talk to me.

Now, at the worst moment of his life, he finally was.

I swallowed.

"Thank you."

Dante exhaled.

Then he said something I never expected.

"Elena, I don't know whether you'll ever love me the way you used to."

I closed my eyes.

"But I want our child to grow up knowing that their father eventually learned the difference between being feared and being worthy of respect."

I began crying.

Because for the first time, Dante wasn't promising to protect me with his power.

May you like

He was promising to stop using power as an excuse.
