Chapter 4 - The Art of War

The rain fell in unrelenting, heavy sheets over the ancient stone courtyard of the Villa Romano, situated high in the secluded hills outside Florence.

It was 2:00 AM.

Inside the villa's fortified security room, Julian stood before a bank of high-definition surveillance monitors displaying every angle of the estate's outer perimeter. Standing beside him were eight of his most elite, highly trained security operatives—men who had served in Italian special forces before joining Julian's private security firm.

I stood near the oak desk, wearing a dark tactical jacket over my clothes, watching the thermal camera feeds displaying the thick olive groves surrounding the property.

"The satellite feed just picked up three unregistered black SUVs moving up the private mountain road," Julian's chief security officer reported, pointing at a glowing red heat cluster on the central monitor. "They bypassed the lower estate gate five minutes ago. They are armed with military-grade automatic weapons."

Julian pulled a sleek black tactical pistol from his desk drawer, checked the chamber with a practiced, lethal click, and holstered it at his waist.

"He thinks he's surprising us," Julian said coldly, turning to look at me. "Dominic always believed his rage made him unpredictable. He doesn't realize that his arrogance makes him completely obvious."

Julian walked over to me, taking my hands in his. "Serena, I want you in the subterranean panic room beneath the wine cellar. The door is reinforced with six inches of solid ballistic steel. Once I lock it from the outside, nothing short of an artillery shell can open it."

I looked into his eyes, shaking my head firmly. "No, Julian."

Julian frowned, his dark eyebrows knitting together. "Serena, this isn't a gallery show. This is a violent assault by cartel mercenaries. I need you safe."

"I am not going to hide in a dark room while you fight my war for me, Julian!" I stated fiercely, pulling a small, sleek pistol from my jacket pocket—a weapon Julian's chief officer had taught me how to handle over the past month. "Dominic came here because of my painting. He came here to erase me. I am not that helpless girl in Beverly Hills anymore. I am staying by your side."

Julian stared at me for a long moment, seeing the absolute, unyielding fire burning in my eyes. A slow, proud smile touched his lips.

"You really are extraordinary," Julian murmured softly, leaning in to press a firm, lingering kiss against my lips. "Stay directly behind my shoulder. If anyone clears that doorway who isn't one of my men, you shoot without hesitation."

"Understood," I replied, my fingers wrapping tightly around the grip of the pistol.

BOOM!

A deafening explosion echoed from the outer courtyard as the heavy iron gates of the estate were blown completely off their hinges.

Submachine-gun fire erupted through the stormy night, tearing through the rain-slicked courtyard. Julian's tactical team moved with lethal, surgical precision, taking positions behind the thick stone pillars of the villa's loggia and returning fire with overwhelming force.

Muzzle flashes illuminated the dark windows like lightning strikes. Through the ballistic glass of the security room, I saw three cartel mercenaries collapse onto the stone pavement as Julian's men expertly pinned the invading force inside the courtyard kill-zone.

Suddenly, the heavy oak doors of the main hall shattered inward as a massive battering ram slammed through the wood.

Four armed men surged into the grand foyer, led by a tall, disheveled figure wearing a rain-soaked black trench coat, holding a heavy submachine gun.

It was Dominic.

His face was bruised, his eyes wild and bloodshot, filled with the unhinged insanity of a man who had lost everything and had nothing left to live for except bloody revenge.

"JULIAN!" Dominic roared, his voice echoing frantically off the high vaulted ceilings of the villa. "SERENA! COME OUT AND FACE ME, YOU TRAITORS!"

Julian stepped out from the security corridor into the upper balcony overlooking the grand foyer, his weapon raised, his posture immovable as a mountain.

"You should have stayed in Los Angeles, Dominic," Julian called down coldly, his voice echoing over the heavy rain. "You were facing twenty years in a federal prison. Now you're going to leave Italy in a body bag."

Dominic looked up at the balcony, a terrifying, psychotic grin stretching across his face. "I built you, Julian! I built her! Neither of you gets to live in paradise while I rot in the dirt!"

Dominic raised his submachine gun toward the balcony and pulled the trigger—

RAT-TAT-TAT-TAT-TAT!

Sparks flew off the iron railing as bullets chewed through the plaster. Julian dropped behind a stone pillar, returning fire with three precise shots that struck the cartel mercenary standing directly behind Dominic.

I stepped out onto the upper walkway, aiming my pistol over the stone balustrade, my eyes locking onto Dominic's shocked face as he saw me standing beside his former underboss, holding a weapon.

"This ends tonight, Dominic!" I shouted, my voice clear and strong over the gunfire.

Dominic stared up at me in utter disbelief. "Serena..."

Before Dominic could aim his weapon toward me, Julian lunged out from behind the pillar, unleashing a rapid burst of gunfire that struck Dominic twice—once in his shoulder and once squarely in his thigh.

Dominic screamed in agony, dropping his weapon as he collapsed heavily onto his knees on the marble floor of the foyer, blood pooling rapidly beneath his coat.

The remaining cartel mercenaries, seeing their leader downed and Julian's tactical team surrounding them from all sides, immediately dropped their weapons and raised their hands in absolute surrender.

Julian walked slowly down the grand marble staircase, his weapon pointed directly at Dominic's chest, stopping two feet away from the bleeding man.

Dominic looked up at Julian, coughing up blood, his eyes filled with pure, terrifying hatred. "Finish it then... shoot me, you bastard..."

Julian looked down at his former friend, his dark eyes completely devoid of anger—holding only a quiet, profound sense of pity.

"I'm not going to kill you, Dominic," Julian said softly. "That would be too easy. The Italian State Police and the FBI extradition team are already waiting at the bottom of the mountain."

Julian looked up at me as I walked down the staircase to stand beside his side, wrapping my arm around his waist.

May you like

"You are going to spend the rest of your life inside a maximum-security federal cell in Colorado," Julian informed Dominic coldly. "Where you will watch on a tiny black-and-white television as Serena's art changes the world... without your name ever being mentioned again."

Dominic let out a horrified, weeping scream as Italian police officers flooded through the front doors, dragging him away in heavy iron chains into the stormy night.
