Chapter 2 - The Woman Who Arrived Wearing My Husband's Coat

Vincent saw Hope before he saw me. The NICU nurse made him scrub his hands and remove his watch. He obeyed without argument, a fact that would have shocked everyone who worked for him.
Hope lay inside an incubator beneath a blue blanket. Her chest rose and fell with the help of breathing support. There were wires against her skin and a tiny knitted cap on her head. Vincent pressed one hand against the glass, unable to touch her.
'I'm her father,' he told the nurse.
'I know,' she said. 'Right now, she needs you to listen.'
He did.
By morning, the photographs from his grandfather's party were circulating online. In every picture, Sophia stood at his side. A gossip account called her the real Mrs. Moretti. Under the photographs, strangers speculated that I had finally accepted my place in the family.
Anna saw the posts while sitting beside my hospital bed. She turned her phone facedown and told me none of it mattered. But when I opened my eyes, she was crying.
'Hope?' I whispered.
'Stable. Tiny, stubborn, beautiful.' Anna squeezed my hand. 'Just like you.'
I asked whether Vincent had come. She hesitated long enough to tell me everything.
'He was here,' she said. 'Rebecca is on her way. We don't have to make decisions today.'
I closed my eyes. 'I already made mine.'
That afternoon, Sophia arrived at the hospital wearing Vincent's charcoal overcoat. She carried an extravagant white bouquet and wore an expression of wounded innocence. She told the reception desk she was family.
Anna met her outside my room.
'You aren't on the visitor list.'
Sophia smiled. 'Vincent asked me to check on Claire.'
'Then Vincent can call the nurses himself.'
The smile vanished. 'You don't understand our family.'
'No,' Anna said. 'But I understand a woman who almost died alone.'
Sophia raised her voice, drawing attention. She claimed I had exaggerated my condition to punish Vincent, then said I had always been jealous of her. Anna didn't move. A security officer stepped closer.
I heard enough from inside the room to recognize the old pattern. Sophia would provoke me. Vincent would hear only the part where I defended myself. Then I would be accused of making a scene.
Not this time.
'Please ask her to leave,' I told Elena.
Elena did. Sophia went, but not before leaving the flowers on a chair as if they were proof of generosity.
Later, Vincent appeared at my doorway. He looked as if he hadn't slept. His tie was gone, and his hair was no longer perfectly combed.
'Claire.'
I watched him stand there. I had spent years imagining what it would feel like to hear my name spoken with that much desperation. Now that I did, I felt tired.
'Hope needs you,' I said. 'You can speak with her doctors.'
'I need to talk to you.'
'I know. I don't have the strength today.'
He took a step forward. Anna stood.
Vincent stopped. For a long moment, I thought he would order her aside. Instead he looked at the chair beside my bed and asked, 'May I sit?'
I shook my head.
The rejection landed visibly. He nodded once and left.
Rebecca arrived after sunset with a slim folder. She explained that our divorce petition could proceed when I was ready and that any custody arrangement would be determined by Hope's best interests, not Vincent's wealth or my letter. She also warned me about the Moretti family's reputation: people with power sometimes treated legal processes like negotiations they could dominate.
'I won't let him buy this decision,' I said.
'You don't have to,' she answered. 'We will document everything and use the court.'
Before Rebecca left, she showed me a message from an unknown number. It contained a photograph of Sophia entering Vincent's private office two days before my hospitalization. Beneath it were six words: ASK WHAT SHE TOOK FROM THE SAFE.
I stared at the screen. My marriage had broken because of what Vincent had done openly. Now someone was suggesting there was something hidden underneath.
Across town, Vincent confronted Sophia about the hospital visit. She insisted Anna had insulted her. He asked why she had worn his coat. She said she had been cold.
Then he asked a different question.
'Were you in my office Tuesday night?'
Sophia's face changed for less than a second. But Vincent saw it.
May you like
'Why?' she whispered.
'Because someone has started telling me the truth,' he said. 'And I intend to hear the rest.'
