Chapter 3 - The Mafia Boss Learned His Wife’s Ex-Convict Brother Was His Father’s Secret Son—And the Woman Who Tried to Destroy Their Marriage Was Hiding the TruthMarco arrived at the townhouse shortly after three in the morning.

He found Dante in the library.
Isabella sat on the sofa, wrapped in a blanket.
A half-finished cup of tea rested beside her.
Marco looked between them.
"Okay."
He closed the door.
"Someone tell me why this feels like the beginning of a family funeral."
Dante didn't smile.
"Sit down."
Marco obeyed.
Dante placed a folder on the table.
Inside were copies of Gabriel Rossi's court records.
Marco opened it.
His expression changed as he read.
"Where did you get these?"
"Isabella."
Marco looked at her.
She nodded.
"My brother."
He stared.
"Gabriel?"
"Yes."
Marco exhaled.
"Well."
He leaned back.
"That explains a few things."
Dante's eyes narrowed.
"What things?"
"Why your mother hired a private investigator."
Dante stared.
"She knew?"
Marco hesitated.
"I don't know."
"Marco."
"I know she was asking questions about Gabriel before the photographs appeared."
Dante's jaw tightened.
"How long?"
"Three weeks."
Dante stood.
"Three weeks?"
Marco nodded.
"She called me after someone told her Isabella had been seen with a man near the bookstore."
"And you didn't tell me?"
Marco looked uncomfortable.
"She said it was a private family matter."
Dante laughed bitterly.
"Everything in this family becomes private when someone wants to hide a crime."
Marco didn't argue.
Isabella looked at Dante.
"Please don't fight."
Dante turned toward her.
"I'm not fighting."
Marco raised an eyebrow.
"You're definitely considering it."
Dante glared.
Marco sighed.
"Fine. Let's focus."
He opened the court file again.
"Gabriel's conviction has problems."
Dante sat.
"What problems?"
"The prosecution relied heavily on a witness who later recanted."
"Why wasn't the conviction overturned?"
"Procedural issues. The appeal was denied."
Isabella's eyes filled.
"Gabriel tried for years."
Marco nodded.
"I know."
Dante looked at him.
"How?"
Marco hesitated.
Then said:
"Because I found a petition filed two years ago."
Dante stared.
"Against whom?"
"Vittorio Moretti."
Silence.
Marco continued.
"Gabriel claimed Father arranged false testimony."
Dante looked down.
"Did you investigate?"
Marco swallowed.
"No."
The admission hung between them.
Dante stared at his brother.
"Why?"
Marco looked ashamed.
"Because Father was dead. Because I didn't want to know. Because I told myself the past was buried."
Dante leaned back.
For a moment, he saw himself in Marco.
The same excuses.
The same fear.
The same loyalty that had become blindness.
He looked at Isabella.
"I'm sorry."
She shook her head.
"You didn't know."
"I should have asked."
She said nothing.
That silence was fair.
Dante turned back to Marco.
"Find everything."
Marco nodded.
"Already started."
"And the gray sedan?"
Marco's expression darkened.
"Registered to a security company."
"Which one?"
"Vale Protective Services."
Dante frowned.
"Vale?"
Marco nodded.
"Owned by a man named Richard Vale."
Isabella went pale.
Dante noticed.
"What?"
She swallowed.
"Richard Vale was the prosecutor who handled Gabriel's case."
The room went silent.
Marco slowly closed the folder.
"Well."
He looked at Dante.
"That's not good."
Dante's phone vibrated.
His mother's name appeared.
He stared.
Then answered.
"Mother."
Katarina's voice sounded tired.
"We need to talk."
Dante looked at Isabella.
"Yes."
"Come to the penthouse."
"No."
A pause.
"Dante."
"You can come here."
Silence.
Then:
"Very well."
She arrived forty minutes later.
No driver.
No assistant.
No jewelry except her wedding ring.
Dante had never seen her look so old.
She entered the library.
Saw Isabella.
Then Marco.
Her face changed.
"So everyone knows."
Dante stared.
"Knows what?"
Katarina closed her eyes.
Then sat.
For a long moment, she said nothing.
Finally, she looked at Isabella.
"I owe you an apology."
Isabella stared.
Katarina continued.
"I had you followed because I was afraid."
Dante's jaw tightened.
"Of what?"
His mother looked at him.
"Of the truth."
Silence.
Dante leaned forward.
"What truth?"
Katarina reached into her purse.
Removed an old photograph.
Placed it on the table.
Dante looked down.
His father.
Younger.
Smiling.
Beside him stood a woman holding a baby.
Marco leaned closer.
"Who is that?"
Katarina's lips trembled.
"Her name was Lucia Rossi."
Isabella went still.
"My grandmother?"
Katarina nodded.
Dante stared.
"What does she have to do with Father?"
His mother looked at him.
"Lucia and Vittorio had a relationship before he married me."
Silence.
Marco stopped breathing.
Dante stared.
"What?"
Katarina continued.
"Gabriel was born from that relationship."
The room went silent.
Isabella covered her mouth.
Dante looked at the photograph again.
The baby.
His father.
The resemblance.
His stomach tightened.
"Gabriel is Father's son?"
Katarina nodded.
"Yes."
Marco whispered:
"Jesus Christ."
Dante leaned back.
For a moment, he couldn't speak.
Then he looked at Isabella.
Her face had gone pale.
She was staring at the photograph.
Dante's mind raced.
Gabriel was Isabella's brother.
Gabriel was his father's son.
That meant—
He stopped.
No.
The dates.
The family relationships.
Something didn't fit.
He looked at Katarina.
"Isabella's mother was Lucia's daughter."
Katarina nodded.
"Yes."
Dante stared.
"Then Gabriel is Isabella's uncle."
Silence.
Isabella looked up.
"What?"
Katarina closed her eyes.
"Yes."
The room seemed to tilt.
Isabella had grown up believing Gabriel was her older brother.
But he was actually her mother's younger half-brother.
Her uncle.
The man who had raised her after her mother became ill.
Dante stared at his mother.
"And Father knew?"
"Yes."
"Did Gabriel?"
"No."
"Did Lucia?"
"Yes."
Dante's voice hardened.
"And you?"
Katarina looked down.
"I discovered it years later."
Marco stared.
"Why didn't you tell us?"
She began crying.
For the first time in Dante's life, he saw his mother cry without trying to hide it.
"Because Vittorio threatened to destroy everyone involved."
Dante's jaw tightened.
"Of course he did."
Katarina looked at Isabella.
"Your grandmother begged me not to tell."
Isabella's eyes filled.
"Why?"
"She was afraid Gabriel would be hurt."
Dante stared.
"And then he was."
Katarina nodded.
"Yes."
Silence.
Then Dante asked:
"Did you help Father frame him?"
His mother looked at him.
"No."
"Did you know?"
She hesitated.
Dante's voice hardened.
"Mother."
Katarina swallowed.
"I knew Gabriel had discovered something."
"What?"
"Financial records."
Dante stared.
"Did you know Father planned to silence him?"
She closed her eyes.
"I suspected."
The words were almost inaudible.
Dante stood.
His chair scraped against the floor.
Isabella flinched.
He stopped.
Then slowly sat again.
He looked at his mother.
"You suspected."
Katarina nodded.
"And you did nothing."
Tears slid down her face.
"I was afraid."
Dante stared.
"For yourself?"
"For all of you."
He laughed bitterly.
"You protected Father."
She shook her head.
"I thought I was protecting the family."
Dante looked at Isabella.
Then Marco.
Then back at Katarina.
"No."
His voice was quiet.
"You protected the name."
Katarina covered her face.
For a long moment, nobody spoke.
Then Isabella stood.
Everyone turned.
She looked at Katarina.
"I don't care about the Moretti name."
Katarina lowered her hands.
Isabella continued.
"I care about my brother."
Her voice broke.
"The man who raised me."
She looked at Dante.
"The man who worked three jobs so I could finish school."
Then back at Katarina.
"He lost nine years of his life."
Katarina began crying harder.
Isabella's eyes filled.
"And you sat in your beautiful house knowing he was innocent."
Silence.
Katarina whispered:
"I'm sorry."
Isabella shook her head.
"Sorry doesn't give him those years back."
Then she turned and walked out.
Dante rose immediately.
He followed her into the hallway.
She stood beside the stairs, one hand against her stomach.
Her breathing was uneven.
"Isabella."
She shook her head.
"Don't."
He stopped.
She looked at him.
"I'm not angry at you."
He swallowed.
"Okay."
"But I can't be in that room."
"I understand."
Tears slid down her face.
"She looked at me like I was dirty."
Dante's chest tightened.
"Isabella—"
"Every dinner. Every holiday. Every time I tried to be kind to her."
She began crying harder.
"She knew."
Dante stepped closer.
"Can I hold you?"
She nodded.
He wrapped his arms around her.
She buried her face in his chest.
He held her.
For a long time.
Then she whispered:
"What happens now?"
Dante looked toward the library.
Where his mother sat with the truth she had buried.
He swallowed.
"Now we stop protecting people who hurt others."
Isabella pulled back.
"Even your mother?"
Dante closed his eyes.
Then nodded.
"Even her."
The next morning, Dante met Gabriel Rossi.
Not in a warehouse.
Not in a guarded office.
At a small diner in Queens.
Gabriel arrived wearing a faded jacket.
He looked tired.
Older than forty-one.
His scar cut through one eyebrow.
He stopped when he saw Dante.
For a moment, neither spoke.
Then Gabriel said:
"So you're the husband."
Dante stood.
"Yes."
Gabriel looked him over.
"You look like your father."
Dante swallowed.
"I know."
Gabriel sat.
"That isn't a compliment."
"I know."
The waitress brought coffee.
Neither touched it.
Finally, Dante said:
"I know what happened."
Gabriel laughed bitterly.
"Do you?"
"Some of it."
Gabriel stared.
"Then you know your family destroyed mine."
Dante nodded.
"Yes."
The admission seemed to surprise him.
Gabriel leaned back.
"What do you want?"
"To help clear your name."
Gabriel laughed.
"With money?"
"No."
"With lawyers?"
"Possibly."
"With threats?"
"No."
Gabriel stared.
Dante continued.
"With evidence."
Gabriel's expression changed.
"What evidence?"
"My mother has records."
Gabriel went still.
"Your mother?"
Dante nodded.
"And I think my father left more."
Gabriel stared.
Then slowly leaned forward.
"There's something you need to know."
Dante waited.
Gabriel's voice dropped.
"Your father didn't frame me because of money."
Dante frowned.
"Then why?"
Gabriel looked toward the window.
"Because I found out what happened to your first wife."
Dante froze.
The words struck like a physical blow.
"My what?"
Gabriel stared.
"Your first wife."
Dante's voice turned dangerous.
"I've only been married once."
Gabriel's expression changed.
Then he whispered:
"Then you really don't know."
Dante felt the world shift.
Gabriel reached into his jacket.
Removed a folded document.
Placed it on the table.
Dante stared.
It was a marriage certificate.
His name.
A woman's name.
A date from twelve years earlier.
A date he remembered for a very different reason.
He looked at Gabriel.
"What is this?"
Gabriel's eyes were dark.
"Proof that your father lied to you about more than my conviction."
Dante stared at the document.
Then at the name.
Elena Vescari.
A woman he had loved before Isabella.
A woman he believed had died in a car accident.
A woman he had never married.
Or so he thought.
And suddenly, the secret surrounding Gabriel's conviction was no longer only about his father.
It was about a marriage Dante didn't remember.
May you like
A death that might not have happened.
And a woman from his past who could destroy everything he had built with Isabella.
