Chapter 4 - The Shattered Dynasty

By 8:00 AM on Saturday morning, the news of the scandal had exploded across national financial networks like a wildfire.
Headline banners across CNBC and Bloomberg read: NORTHSTAR HOSPITALITY OUSTS CEO DANIEL VANCE AMID MULTI-MILLION DOLLAR EMBEZZLEMENT INVESTIGATION; FOUNDER ELENA VANCE TAKES CONTROL.
I sat in my new executive office on the forty-fifth floor, watching the television screen while sipping a cup of black coffee. Outside my door, a team of forensic accountants and legal investigators were busily going through Daniel’s private files, boxing up his belongings, and securing the corporate network.
My private phone chimed on the desk.
It was Vivian. She had called thirty-four times since five in the morning.
I picked up the phone, placed it on speaker, and set it on the desk.
“Elena! You psychotic, vengeful monster!” Vivian’s voice screamed through the speaker, so loud it vibrated the glass coffee cup. “What have you done to my family?! Two police officers just showed up at my door and arrested Brooke for assault! And there are movers outside my house putting eviction tags on my furniture!”
I took a calm sip of my coffee. “Good morning, Vivian. I see you received my message.”
“Are you out of your mind?!” Vivian shrieked, her voice shaking with hysterical rage. “Daniel is facing federal prison charges! Brooke is in a county jail holding cell! And you are throwing his own mother out onto the street! After everything my son did for you?! He saved you from obscurity! He gave you a life!”
“Your son didn't save me, Vivian,” I replied, my voice steady and cold as steel. “He stole from me. He took credit for my work, used my intellectual property, and used my company as a personal piggy bank for his family’s disgusting greed. And last night, while you sat at your dining table mocking me, your daughter physically assaulted me while your son stood by and laughed.”
“It was a family argument!” Vivian sobbed, her tone suddenly shifting from rage to frantic desperation. “Brooke was stressed! Daniel was drunk! You can't ruin their entire lives over a simple dinner disagreement, Elena! Please... call off the lawyers! Call off the police! We can fix this within the family!”
“There is no family, Vivian,” I said flatly. “There is only a corporation recovering its stolen assets. The townhome you are currently standing in was purchased using seven hundred and fifty thousand dollars of embezzled Northstar development funds. The mortgage is in the company’s name, not Daniel’s. You have until five o'clock this afternoon to gather your personal clothes and vacate the property before the sheriff’s department locks the doors.”
“Elena, please!” Vivian wept openly now, her high-society pride completely crushed into dust. “I have nowhere to go! My savings are tied up in Daniel’s accounts! I don't have any money!”
“Then I suggest you call some of those high-society friends who were sitting at your dinner table last night,” I said softly. “Perhaps one of them will let you serve dinner for them.”
I pressed the red button, ending the call, and muted her number permanently.
Ten minutes later, Maya stepped into my office, holding a tablet displaying an update from the federal courthouse.
“Daniel’s private defense attorney just tried to post bail,” Maya reported, her face beaming with victory. “The federal judge denied bail, citing Daniel as a severe flight risk due to the hidden offshore accounts in the Caymans. He’s going to be sitting in a federal detention center until his formal arraignment on Tuesday.”
“And Brooke?” I asked.
“Her bail was set at fifty thousand dollars for felony assault and grand larceny,” Maya smirked. “Since all her corporate cards are frozen and Daniel’s accounts are locked, she couldn't come up with the cash. She’s currently sitting in a communal cell at the King County Jail.”
I leaned back in my leather chair, looking out over the city.
For six long years, I had allowed myself to stay in the shadows, believing that keeping the peace in my marriage was worth sacrificing my own identity. I had let a family of greedy, entitled narcissists convince me that I was worthless, simply because I didn't care about designer clothes, luxury galas, or public applause.

They had mistaken my quiet nature for weakness.
And that mistake had cost them everything they ever cared about.
