Chapter 4 - The Fall of the Vances

The arrest of Priscilla Whitlock sent shockwaves through Baltimore’s elite society.

Within forty-eight hours, local news channels and national crime syndicates were broadcasting the massive scandal: the prominent widow of real estate mogul Thomas Whitlock had been indicted on charges of first-degree murder, federal human trafficking, conspiracy to commit fraud, and grand embezzlement. Her daughters, Devlin and Marlo, were named as material accomplices after police recovered wire transfer records proving they had actively used funds derived from Grant’s illegal operations.

All three women were held without bail in a high-security state correctional facility, their glamorous lives permanently shattered.

However, one massive thread of the dark web remained unsettled: Marcus Vance.

The head of the Vance crime family—the syndicate that had partnered with Priscilla and financed Tobias Grant’s human trafficking ring—refused to go down quietly. Realizing that Augustus Falcone was systematically dismantling his entire infrastructure using the evidence recovered from Thomas Whitlock’s ledgers, Vance called for an emergency war council at his private docks in South Baltimore.

On a rainy Thursday evening, four days after Priscilla’s arrest, Delaney sat inside Augustus’s private leather-bound study at the estate.

She wore a comfortable cream-colored cashmere sweater, reviewing real estate restructuring documents alongside Henry Voss. Over the past ninety-six hours, with Henry’s legal guidance and Augustus’s absolute protection, Delaney had officially taken full legal ownership of her father’s ninety-million-dollar estate, including the Federal Hill townhouse, commercial shipping ports, and private land holdings.

The heavy mahogany doors of the study opened, and Augustus walked into the room.

He wore a dark suit, his broad shoulders squared, but Delaney instantly noticed the subtle tension in his posture.

Henry Voss stood up, gathering his papers. “I will leave you two to confer, Augustus. The final probate papers will be ready for Delaney’s signature tomorrow morning.”

“Thank you, Henry,” Augustus nodded respectfully as the elderly attorney exited the study, closing the doors softly behind him.

Delaney stood up from her desk, walking over to Augustus, looking up into his dark gray eyes with genuine concern. “What’s wrong, Augustus? Is it Marcus Vance?”

Augustus offered a soft, quiet sigh, reaching out to gently brush a lock of dark hair behind her ear. His touch was warm, sending a pleasant shiver through her veins.

“Vance tried to strike one of our maritime supply trucks two hours ago near the harbor,” Augustus revealed, his voice low and steady. “He’s cornered, Delaney. A cornered predator is unpredictable. He knows that once your father's full financial records are submitted to the federal prosecutor on Friday, his entire syndicate will be dismantled.”

Delaney took a soft step closer to him, wrapping her delicate hands around his forearm. “Then let me go with you to the prosecutor’s office tomorrow.”

Augustus brow furrowed in disagreement. “No, Delaney. It’s too dangerous. I want you to stay here at the estate under full security.”

“Augustus, listen to me,” Delaney urged firmly, her dark eyes shining with unwavering courage. “For a year, I hid in the shadows. I let my stepfamily walk over me because I thought I was alone. But you showed me that I have power. I am Thomas Whitlock’s daughter, and I’m not going to hide while you fight his murderers for me.”

Augustus stared down at her, taking in her incredible strength, beauty, and fierce determination. The cold, impenetrable Mafia Don felt his heart swell with an overwhelming sense of respect and deep, undeniable love for the woman standing before him.

He reached out, his broad hand gently cupping her cheek, his thumb stroking her smooth skin.

“You really are your father’s daughter,” Augustus murmured softly, his gray eyes locking onto hers with intense devotion. “Brave, stubborn, and brilliant.”

Delaney leaned her face into his warm palm, looking up into his eyes. “I survived that night because of you, Augustus. I trust you with my life.”

Augustus slowly leaned down, his lips meeting hers in a soft, deep, breathtaking kiss that sent a wave of absolute heat through both their souls. Delaney wrapped her arms around his broad neck, kissing him back with all the passion and gratitude resting in her heart.

When they finally pulled back, resting their foreheads together, Augustus looked into her eyes with a sacred, unshakeable promise.

“Tomorrow night, Marcus Vance falls,” Augustus whispered against her lips. “And then, my love, you take back your life completely.”
