Chapter 5
The official highway patrol report was released the following week,
and the legal findings were a massive blow to the Hayes family.
The state investigator had concluded that the unauthorized route change,
combined with David’s reckless demands to the driver, was the primary cause.
The limo company was cleared of direct structural liability for the crash,
shifting the full financial burden onto David and Khloe personally.
Jessica Sterling called me into her office to review the final strategy,
and she had a look of fierce, professional triumph on her sharp face.
She explained that with this official police report entered into evidence,
our civil suit for personal injury was an absolute open-and-shut case.
She had already filed the motion for a summary judgment against them,
meaning the judge could rule in our favor without a lengthy trial.
As we were speaking, Jessica’s administrative assistant walked into the room,
stating that David’s defense attorney was on the line requesting a call.
Jessica put the call on speakerphone, and the man’s voice sounded tired,
as he immediately offered a full, unconditional surrender on behalf of his client.
David was willing to sign a stipulated judgment for the full amount,
including the wedding deposits, personal injuries, and legal fees.
The only condition he desperately begged for was a structured payment plan,
as his liquid bank accounts had been completely drained by his company.
He had been officially fired from his corporate executive position,
and his former firm was threatening to file criminal charges for embezzlement.
He was currently working a low-level consulting job from his mother’s house,
and his credit score had plummeted into absolute, irrecoverable ruin.
Jessica looked at me, silently asking for my final executive decision,
and I leaned back in my leather chair with a calm, unbothered expression.
I told his attorney that I would accept the stipulated judgment today,
but I demanded a strict legal lien placed on David’s remaining assets.
If he missed a single monthly payment by even twenty-four hours,
we would immediately seize his silver sedan and his mother’s jewelry.
The defense attorney let out a heavy sigh through the telephone line,
and he admitted that his client had no choice but to accept the terms.
When the call ended, Jessica clapped her hands together in delight,
stating that we had completely broken their ability to fight back.
I walked out of the law office into the bright afternoon sunlight,
feeling the warm air wash over my face like a sweet, gentle blessing.
I drove straight to the bakery to share the incredible news with my mom,
and I found her busy preparing a large batch of artisanal wedding cakes.
A young couple was standing by the counter, tasting different frostings,
and their eyes were filled with the bright, innocent hope of the future.
I felt a slight pang in my chest, but it was not filled with envy,
and it was replaced by a deep sense of happiness for their journey.
My mom looked up and saw the radiant expression on my face,
and she immediately knew that the final legal battle had been won.
She hugged me tightly, her apron leaving a white dust of flour on my dress,
and she whispered that our long, painful nightmare was officially over.

We were free from their toxicity, free from their endless financial drainage,
and we were standing on the solid ground of our own magnificent victory.
