Victor looked exhausted.
“I was trying to protect everyone.”
Ethan's voice came from the doorway.
“No.
You were trying not to choose.”
We all turned.
He stood there alone.
I rose.
“Ethan—” “I'm fine.”
He wasn't.
But he was nineteen, and old enough to decide whether he wanted to hear the truth about his own family.
Victor held out a hand.
“Son.”
Ethan didn't move closer.
“You gave away eight properties while I was standing outside.”
“It's complicated.”
“Apparently.”
Victor looked toward me.
“Claire, help me.”
For years, those words would have sent me rushing toward him.
Solve the problem.
Smooth the conversation.
Translate Victor's intentions into something gentler than his actions.
This time I stayed where I was.
“You need to talk to him yourself.”
Victor looked at Ethan.
“The properties weren't about loving him more.”
“Then what were they about?”
“Responsibility.”
Ethan nodded slowly.
“And I'm not your responsibility?”
“You have your mother.
You have the company.
You have—” He stopped.
Ethan's expression hardened.
“I have Mom, so I need less from you?”
“That isn't what I meant.”
“It sounded like it.”
Noah appeared behind him holding two bottles of water.
He froze when he realized everyone was arguing.
Ethan immediately stepped backward.
“Hey.
It's okay.”
Noah looked toward Melissa.
“I can go back outside.”
“Yes,” Melissa said quickly.
“Please.”
Ethan surprised everyone.
“I'll come with you.”
Before leaving, he turned toward Victor.
“I don't care about the Porsche.”
Then the door closed behind them.
Victor stared after him.
Something inside his face seemed to collapse.
For perhaps the first time that afternoon, the properties no longer mattered.
“I thought he'd understand,” Victor whispered.
“He may someday,” I said.
“But not the way you expected.”
Bernard gathered the signed documents.
“I think we should pause everything until the ownership questions are reviewed.”
Victor shook his head.
“No.
The boy needs security.”
“And he should have it,” I said.
Everyone looked at me.
Even Melissa.
“I am not trying to take anything from Noah.”
Victor stared at me.
“Then why did you keep all this?”
“To protect myself.
To protect Ethan.
To protect the company.
Those are not the same as hurting Noah.”
Melissa's expression shifted.
“What happens now?”
“We find out what Victor actually owns.”
“And then?”
“Then whatever belongs to him can pass according to the law and whatever valid arrangements he made.”
She looked down at the folder.
“And everything else?”
“Goes back where it belongs.”
Victor whispered my name again.
“Claire.”
I walked closer.
His anger was gone now.
There was only exhaustion.
“You really knew all these years?”
“Yes.”
“About Noah?”
“Yes.”
“About the apartment?”
“Yes.”
“The school?”
“Yes.”
He stared at me.
“Why didn't you leave?”
It was the question I'd asked myself more times than I could count.
“Because every year I thought I needed one more thing before I was ready.
Ethan to be older.
Your mother to recover.
My business to become stable.
Then eventually I realized staying had become its own habit.”
He looked away.
“I thought you didn't notice me anymore.”
“I noticed everything.”
That hurt him more than I expected.
Melissa moved toward the door.
“I need some air.”
Before she left, she paused beside me.
“There is something you should know.”
Victor's head turned sharply.
“Melissa.”
She ignored him.
She opened her handbag and removed a folded envelope.
It was old, creased at the corners.
“I found this six months ago.”
She handed it to me.
Victor's name was written across the front in handwriting I recognized.
His own.
“What is it?”
I asked.
Melissa looked at him before answering.
“A letter he wrote to you.”
Victor closed his eyes.
“I never sent it,” he said.
“I know,” Melissa replied.
I unfolded the envelope.
Inside were four handwritten pages.
The first line stopped me.
Claire, if you are reading this, it means I finally found the courage to tell you about Noah.
The date at the top was eleven years earlier.
I looked at Victor.
For thirteen years, I had believed his greatest secret was everything he had concealed.
Suddenly I wondered how many times he had almost told the truth.
And why, every single time, he had chosen silence instead. -

PART 3 I did not read the letter in Victor's hospital room.
That surprised him.
Perhaps he expected me to tear through the pages immediately, desperate to discover what he had once intended to confess.
Instead, I folded them carefully and returned them to the envelope.
“You don't want to know?” he asked.
“I've spent thirteen years learning that important things deserve more than five hurried minutes.”
Melissa looked at me with an expression I couldn't read.
