“Ba!”
Grace smiled.
“She thinks everything is a ball.”
Ethan crouched beside her.
“That’s the ocean.”
“Ba!”
“Close.”
Grace laughed.
Ethan stood.
“Northlight doing okay?”
“We signed the Toronto client.”
His eyebrows rose.
“The big one?”
Grace gave him a look.
“The fact that you know which one is the big one is suspicious.”
“I listen now.”
“Sometimes excessively.”
“I have notes.”
“You made notes about my company?”
“I’m trying to be supportive.”
“That’s dangerously adorable.”
He smiled.
Grace leaned against the railing.
Below them, sunlight scattered across the Atlantic.
Ethan stood beside her, close but not touching.
“You know,” he said, “I used to think that day was when I lost you.”
Grace looked at him.
“And now?”
“I think it was when I realized I had stopped seeing you.”
Grace considered that.
“Maybe.”
Ethan glanced at Clara.
“What do you think it was for you?”
Grace watched her daughter trying to hand a seashell to a potted palm.
She smiled.
“The day I stopped waiting for someone else to tell me who I was.”
Ethan nodded.
Then Grace slipped her hand into his.
He looked down at their joined fingers.
“Don’t make a big deal out of it.”
“I wouldn’t dare.”
“Good.”
They stood there while Clara babbled at the ocean.
A year earlier, Grace had walked through that lobby believing she needed to decide immediately whether her marriage was over.
She knew better now.
Some decisions deserved time.
Some truths arrived slowly.
Some forgiveness came not from forgetting pain but from watching what a person chose to do after causing it.
Ethan had changed.
So had Grace.
Their marriage had changed most of all.
It was less effortless than before.
Less polished.
More spoken.
More deliberate.
More real.
And when they finally walked back inside, Grace did not follow Ethan.
Ethan did not lead Grace.
They walked beside each other.
Clara between them.
The black folder was long gone.
The papers had been signed.
The hidden patent had found its home.
Northlight had grown.
Grace had returned to work she loved.
Ethan had learned that responsibility was not confinement but participation.
And their daughter would grow up in a family that was not perfect, but honest enough to keep learning.
At the elevator, Ethan pressed the button.
Grace looked at him.
“Five forty-eight.”
He blinked.
“What?”
“The first time we stood near these elevators, Declan told me we had five minutes and forty-eight seconds before my meeting.”
Ethan groaned.
“You remember the exact number?”
“I remember everything from that morning.”
“Fair.”
The elevator opened.
Grace stepped inside with Clara.
Ethan remained outside for half a second.
Grace raised an eyebrow.
“Are you coming?”
He smiled.
“Absolutely.”
The doors closed.
And this time, they were on the same side of them.
